oxipass-tui: A Local Password Vault You Use in the Terminal

oxipass-tui is a Rust terminal password manager that stores its vault as one encrypted local file. The project says it has no cloud or network dependency and does not rely on a system keyring or clipboard daemon. It is inspired by KeePassXC, but its README documents a source-build workflow rather than a supported-platform list or official prebuilt downloads.

What oxipass-tui does

The project describes itself as “A terminal-based password manager inspired by KeePassXC, written in Rust.” Its documented entry types are Login, Payment, and Note. The interface also includes live search, secret reveal controls, multiline notes, and a configurable password generator. These are descriptions from the project README, not independent findings about security or reliability. Project README

The README says all data is stored in one encrypted local file, with no cloud, network, system-keyring, or clipboard-daemon dependency. That describes the documented storage model; it does not establish whether a user might separately copy or back up the file using other tools.

Build and create a vault

The documented workflow requires a Rust toolchain. The README gives these commands for a release build and first vault:

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  1. Clone the project repository and change into its directory using the instructions in the README.
  2. Build the release executable with cargo build --release. The documented output path is target/release/oxipass-tui.
  3. Create a vault with oxipass-tui new ~/passwords. The documented vault suffix is .opdb, so this example creates ~/passwords.opdb.
  4. Open the vault with oxipass-tui open ~/passwords.opdb.

The README documents a source build, but does not establish official binary releases or a supported-platform matrix. Check the repository’s current instructions for any changes before building.

Use an optional keyfile

The application can generate an .opkey file for use alongside the master password. The README’s example is oxipass-tui keygen ~/my.opkey; pass it when opening the vault with the -k option, as in oxipass-tui open ~/passwords.opdb -k ~/my.opkey. Keep the keyfile available wherever you need to open that vault: it is an additional required input when configured, not a replacement for the master password. Project README

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What the vault file contains

According to the project’s format description, the plaintext vault is JSON, compressed with deflate, then encrypted with AES-256-GCM. A documented file prefix contains a 16-byte salt and 12-byte nonce, followed by ciphertext and a GCM tag. The project says it derives a 32-byte key from the master password, concatenated with keyfile bytes when a keyfile is used, with Argon2. The README also says the vault is fully re-encrypted on every save and that a wrong master password causes AES-GCM authentication to fail. Project README

The optional keyfile’s JSON fields are version, hash, and base64-encoded data. The README describes the data as 32 random bytes. Its hash is the first four bytes of SHA-256 over the raw key bytes, encoded as lowercase hexadecimal; the project says this detects corruption and is not key authentication. These implementation details explain what the project documents, but they are not proof that the cryptography or its implementation has been independently validated.

Navigate the terminal interface

The README documents these keyboard controls:

  • j or Down and k or Up: move through entries.
  • /: search.
  • a: add an entry; e: edit; d: delete.
  • r: reveal or hide secrets in the preview.
  • c: open the copy picker.
  • g: open the password generator.
  • q or Ctrl+C: quit.

The project says clipboard transfer uses the OSC 52 terminal escape sequence, avoiding dependencies on X11 or Wayland clipboard libraries. Its README describes this as working in “any modern terminal”; that wording is the project’s claim, not a compatibility guarantee for every terminal setup.

What is established—and what is not

The README is the first-party source for the build steps, interface, and file-format details above. It does not establish independent security-audit status, implementation correctness, official binary availability, or a supported-platform matrix. The cryptographic algorithms named in documentation alone cannot answer those questions.
