Yes—an inexpensive composite reversing-camera monitor can display custom graphics over its camera feed if it uses an accessible AMT630A OSD and you can control that chip over I2C. An ESP32-based project from Ogrinz Labs does this without unlocking the AMT630A’s embedded 8052 firmware. Its starting point was practical: a Robbie the Robot costume wearer was too tall to see through the mouth grille, so a camera and small monitor supplied the view.
Why put a monitor inside a robot costume?
The project began with a visibility problem: the wearer of a tall Robbie the Robot suit could not see out through its mouth grille. A camera and small composite monitor provided a view, and the monitor’s built-in on-screen display offered a way to add navigation information over that image.
Hackaday’s October 3, 2026 report identifies the monitor’s OSD chip as the AMT630A. The report describes the chip as combining video-switching hardware, an OSD graphics system and an 8052 microcontroller core. The project’s approach was to control the OSD through I2C from an ESP32—not to access or unlock the 8052’s firmware.
What the AMT630A OSD library can do
The project’s public Arduino/ESP32 library targets the AMT630A hardware OSD found in composite-video LCD monitor boards. Version 0.7.0 is shown in the repository. Its documented capabilities include:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Five independently positioned OSD windows for separating information on screen.
- Text and custom glyphs.
- 16-color, 4-bits-per-pixel bitmaps, with a Python converter that turns image files into Arduino bitmap data.
- Palette animation, opacity and blending, scaling, blinking regions, and window movement.
The repository also documents Font RAM with 4096 16-bit words (8192 bytes). These are implementation details published for this project, not general specifications for every monitor advertised as having an AMT630A.
What you need to check before connecting an ESP32
The library gives ESP32 example defaults of SDA on GPIO 21 and SCL on GPIO 22. Those pin numbers are a starting point, not proof that a particular monitor exposes compatible I2C connections. The project warns that board wiring and firmware vary, and advises checking the actual pads, voltage levels, power arrangement and keypad circuit before connecting anything. The ESP32 and monitor board also need a common ground.

The repository’s compatibility warning is explicit: “AMT630A products are not all guaranteed to use the same firmware, panel timing, keypad circuit, or exposed I2C connections.” That caution comes from the AMT630A OSD library repository, not the chip manufacturer. The specific reversing monitor’s maker and model are not identified in the Hackaday report, so there is no confirmed off-the-shelf match to recommend.
Why external control can freeze the display
On the project’s hardware-tested monitor, the stock firmware periodically accessed internal video and decoder registers and expected MCU ownership. When the ESP32 repeatedly took external I2C ownership while the stock firmware continued running normally, the display pipeline eventually froze—including both the OSD and live composite video. This is a board-specific interaction reported by the project, not an established behavior for every AMT630A monitor.

On that tested three-button monitor, entering a hidden factory menu before sustained external OSD activity prevented the observed contention during long-duration testing. The library’s standard initialization does not enter that menu, and the procedure depends on the board’s firmware; it is not a universal fix.
The project also documents an optional way to automate the menu-button sequence: three channels of a 74HC4066 switch connected across the tested board’s Menu, plus and minus switch contacts. This is an optional implementation detail for that hardware, not a requirement for basic OSD control.

How to assess a monitor for this project
The library documents one project and a family of AMT630A-based monitor boards, not verified compatibility across products. Before treating another monitor as a candidate, establish these points for that exact board:
- Whether it actually contains an AMT630A.
- Whether its I2C connections are exposed and electrically suitable for the controller.
- How its stock firmware behaves when external I2C control is active.
- Whether the OSD and live composite image continue working during sustained control.
- How the panel timing and keypad circuit are implemented.
These checks matter because a successful graphics demonstration on one board does not establish that another monitor can be wired or operated the same way.
