The useful distinction is not “old game versus new game.” It is the type of decision each game puts at the center of its campaign. Kingmaker asks you to turn dangerous territory into a realm. Wrath of the Righteous puts you at the head of a war against demons and gives character development a mythic dimension. Shadow of the Road is being presented around samurai identity, honor, allegiance and tactical battles in a reimagined Japan.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker
Owlcat describes Kingmaker as its first isometric, party-based computer RPG in the Pathfinder fantasy universe. Its campaign takes place in the Stolen Lands, a region where political instability and exploration are inseparable from the player’s rise to power.

The defining system-level idea is kingdom stewardship. Decisions shape the territory, and the player can establish towns and cities while ruling as a wise leader or a tyrant. That creates a second scale of play beyond the adventuring party: expeditions and encounters happen at ground level, while choices about governance determine how the emerging realm develops.
For someone approaching the game from Shadow of the Road, this is the important expectation to set. Kingmaker is not simply a sequence of fights connected by dialogue. Its premise makes administration, political choices and territorial growth part of the role-playing structure.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Wrath of the Righteous starts with the demonic invasion of Sarkoris and the Worldwound. The player becomes a leader in the Fifth Crusade, so the campaign operates both as party-level fantasy adventure and as a wider military effort.
Its signature character system is the set of mythic paths. Owlcat’s official description lists Angel, Lich, Aeon, Azata, Demon, Gold Dragon, Swarm-that-Walks, Trickster and Legend. These paths are not merely cosmetic labels; they are the advertised framework through which the protagonist’s development takes on a supernatural and ideological direction.
The game also gives the crusade a management layer in which the player commands armies. That combination distinguishes it from Kingmaker: the strategic fantasy is not founding and ruling a kingdom, but directing a crusade against a demonic threat while the adventuring party continues to grow.
Owlcat has reported that international sales of Wrath of the Righteous exceeded one million units. The official page carrying that milestone did not expose a publication year, so the figure should be treated as an undated company-reported total rather than a year-specific sales statistic.

What has been announced for Shadow of the Road
An alternate feudal Japan, not Pathfinder’s fantasy world
Owlcat’s announcement frames Shadow of the Road as an isometric RPG about samurai, honor and allegiance in an alternate version of feudal Japan. The setting also includes magical yokai and steampunk technology. Those ingredients point to a deliberate blend of historical-inspired social structures, supernatural encounters and industrial-era invention rather than a conventional medieval-European fantasy setting.
That setting should change how you read the game’s role-playing premise. Samurai status, questions of loyalty and the presence of yokai suggest that personal identity and factional allegiance will matter. However, the public description does not specify the exact dialogue systems, faction rules, recruitment model or consequences attached to those themes.
Tactical, turn-based combat
The announced combat emphasis is tactical turn-based play. This is the clearest mechanical overlap with the Pathfinder games: both belong to the broad isometric CRPG tradition in which positioning, party composition and deliberate decisions matter more than reflexes.
The overlap stops there unless later material demonstrates more. The available announcement does not establish whether Shadow of the Road uses Pathfinder-style action economies, a particular tabletop ruleset, real-time-with-pause options, a class-and-feat structure, or the same scale of build interactions. Calling it “turn-based” identifies the pacing and broad combat format, not the depth or complexity of the final rules.
Another Angle develops it; Owlcat publishes it
This relationship is essential. Another Angle Games is the developer of Shadow of the Road, and Owlcat Games is the publisher. Owlcat made that distinction explicit in its 2025 ask-me-anything session, which also said the game is being made with Unity.

That means the game should not be described as a third Owlcat-developed Pathfinder title. Owlcat’s publishing role may explain why the project sits alongside the company’s CRPG catalogue, but it does not establish that the production team, technology choices or design process are identical to those behind Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous.

How the strategic layers differ
Kingmaker: build a realm
The strategic question in Kingmaker is territorial and governmental: what kind of kingdom will you create in the Stolen Lands, and how will your decisions affect its towns, cities and population? Exploration supplies the immediate adventure, while governance gives those adventures a political context.
This structure suits players who want their choices to accumulate into a visible realm. The game’s central fantasy is not only becoming powerful; it is taking responsibility for a piece of the world and deciding whether authority is exercised wisely or tyrannically.
Wrath of the Righteous: conduct a crusade
Wrath of the Righteous shifts the strategic scale from civic administration to military leadership. The Fifth Crusade and its armies form the campaign-level layer, while the party handles missions and encounters. Mythic paths add a second axis of strategy by tying the protagonist’s powers and identity to a chosen supernatural route.

Players who liked the idea of a campaign changing because of a major ideological commitment will find the mythic-path premise more relevant than the kingdom-building structure of Kingmaker. It is still impossible to infer from that comparison how much freedom Shadow of the Road will offer around honor or allegiance.
Shadow of the Road: the strategic layer is still an open question
The public description confirms tactical combat, but it does not confirm an equivalent to kingdom management or crusade command. There is no established evidence here of a map-level economy, settlement administration, army recruitment, territory control or another persistent campaign system.
That absence is not proof that the game lacks such features. It means only that the announced material supports a comparison of setting and combat framing, not a claim that Shadow of the Road contains a third strategic layer modeled on Owlcat’s earlier games.

Character building and party expectations
What is established for the Pathfinder titles
Both Pathfinder games are party-based isometric CRPGs with character customization. Wrath of the Righteous adds the explicitly named mythic paths, while Kingmaker places character decisions inside a kingdom-building campaign.
Pathfinder is also a recognizable tabletop-derived rules environment, so its character options are best understood as part of a defined rules tradition. The material available for this comparison does not provide a corresponding ruleset or progression chart for Shadow of the Road.
What not to assume about Shadow of the Road
Do not assume that an isometric camera means the same class system, feat selection, spell design or multiclassing possibilities as Pathfinder. Do not assume that samurai, yokai and steampunk technology automatically translate into a particular build system. Those may become important parts of the final game, but they have not been specified in the announcements covered here.
The safest expectation is narrower: you can expect an isometric role-playing presentation and tactical, turn-based battles, while the depth of character creation, party recruitment and long-term progression remains to be demonstrated.

A current Windows Central report says the PC release moved from November 12, 2026, to March 10, 2027. The report names Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG as PC platforms.

The two Pathfinder games are released titles, so their availability is not subject to the same uncertainty. The difference matters when deciding whether to plan around Shadow of the Road now: its announced premise can be evaluated, but its launch timing and finished feature set can still change.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Reliable conclusions
- Kingmaker centers on exploration of the Stolen Lands and the creation and governance of a kingdom.
- Wrath of the Righteous centers on the Worldwound, the Fifth Crusade, army command and mythic paths.
- Shadow of the Road is announced as an isometric RPG set in alternate feudal Japan, with samurai, honor, allegiance, yokai and steampunk technology.

Questions that remain unanswered
- How long the campaign will be.
- How many recruitable companions, classes or progression paths it will contain.
- Whether combat will include a ruleset comparable in breadth to Pathfinder.
- Whether honor and allegiance produce branching storylines, mechanical bonuses, faction changes or another form of consequence.
- Whether the game has a persistent kingdom-, army- or territory-management layer.
- What final performance, balance and overall quality will be like at launch.
These unknowns are material, not minor details. They determine whether the finished game feels like a systems-heavy party CRPG, a focused tactical adventure or something in between.
Which game is the better reference point?
Use Kingmaker as the reference for political territory
If your main interest is the fantasy of taking control of a region, founding settlements and making decisions as a ruler, Kingmaker is the closest conceptual comparison. Its identity comes from the interaction between adventuring and governing the Stolen Lands.
Use Wrath of the Righteous as the reference for a war-scale campaign
If you are more interested in a large ideological conflict, army leadership and a protagonist whose supernatural path changes their role in the story, Wrath of the Righteous is the more useful reference. Its crusade and mythic-path concepts operate at a scale beyond an ordinary party adventure.
Treat Shadow of the Road as a new setting and combat proposition
If the appeal is samurai culture refracted through fantasy, yokai mythology and steampunk invention, neither Pathfinder game is a direct substitute. The announced tactical turn-based combat provides a familiar structural hook, but the setting and production relationship are different enough that expectations should remain open.
How to follow the project without overreading announcements
- Separate publisher statements from reports. Use Owlcat and Another Angle announcements for confirmed features, and identify the Windows Central article when discussing the reported March 10, 2027 date.
- Look for system details, not just setting art. Class lists, companion information, turn structure, difficulty options and progression examples will reveal more about the game’s depth than a broad genre label.
- Watch for evidence of a campaign layer. A strategic map, settlements, factions, resources or armies would establish a stronger connection to the large-scale structures in the Pathfinder games.
- Wait for hands-on evidence before judging execution. Announced features describe intent; they do not prove balance, performance, campaign length or final quality.
- Check the date again before planning a purchase. The reported schedule is subject to change until the publisher or developer confirms it.
Bottom line
Shadow of the Road is best understood as a separately developed samurai-themed CRPG published by Owlcat, not as “the next Pathfinder.” Kingmaker offers kingdom building in the Stolen Lands; Wrath of the Righteous combines mythic character development with a crusade against the Worldwound; and Shadow of the Road is announced around alternate feudal Japan, honor, allegiance, yokai, steampunk technology and tactical turn-based combat. Those are meaningful similarities in format, but the new game’s rules, strategic layer and final release details remain unconfirmed.
