Overwatch is also free-to-play, and Blizzard later changed its hero-access policy so heroes no longer need Battle Pass unlocking to be playable in all modes. The better fit depends on whether you prefer the games’ different team formats and combat features, and how you feel about optional cosmetic rewards—not on a universal free-to-play winner.
Are Overwatch and Marvel Rivals free to play?
Yes. Both let you play the core game without purchasing a base-game copy. Free access to a game, however, is separate from optional cosmetic purchases and seasonal reward tracks.

Do you have to unlock Overwatch heroes?
Blizzard’s original Overwatch 2 Battle Pass explanation placed new heroes at tier 55 on the free Battle Pass track. That is historical policy, not the rule to apply today. In a later developer update, Blizzard said heroes would no longer need to be unlocked through the Battle Pass to be playable in all game modes. That update’s wording is specifically about access in all game modes. Check Blizzard’s current in-game information for any mode-specific rules rather than relying on the old tier-55 requirement.

How do their team formats and combat features differ?
Overwatch’s official site describes both 5v5 and 6v6 play. Marvel Rivals describes fast-paced 6v6 combat, team-up abilities, and destructible environments. Those are format and feature differences, not evidence that one game is better balanced or more enjoyable.

What can free-to-play players spend money on?
Both games offer cosmetic content through live-service systems. Marvel Rivals’ December 5, 2024 monetization explanation said paid cosmetics change appearance without adding stat bonuses, and that limited quantities of Units could be earned through Battle Passes, achievements, and events. It also said a purchased Luxury Battle Pass could be continued in subsequent seasons. Those are launch-era statements; current offers and pass details may differ by season and region. Marvel Rivals’ September 9, 2026 Season 10 notes document a seasonal Battle Pass, a limited-time rerun of Season 4’s pass, shop bundles, and event rewards. Which game should you choose?
- Choose Marvel Rivals if hero access is your deciding factor. Its official site explicitly promises all heroes free to play.
- Consider Overwatch if you want a choice between its described 5v5 and 6v6 formats. Check current mode availability in-game.
- Consider Marvel Rivals if you specifically want its described team-up abilities and destructible environments.
- Compare current cosmetic stores and reward tracks in-game if you expect to spend or care about earning seasonal items. The available official information does not establish a current price or time-to-reward winner.
- Verify platform compatibility before installing. Blizzard’s 2022 Overwatch 2 launch announcement listed Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, but that historical list is not a complete current compatibility guide.
