Overwatch 2 Roles and Team Compositions Explained for New Players

Overwatch 2 has three roles: Tank, Damage, and Support. In standard Role Queue, a team contains one Tank, two Damage heroes, and two Supports (1-2-2). Your first job is to understand what each role contributes, then choose heroes whose ranges, mobility, defensive tools, and timing give the team one clear way to win fights.

The three Overwatch 2 roles

Roles describe a hero’s main responsibility, not a rigid script. Every hero can deal some damage, survive through positioning, and contest objectives, but the team relies on each role for a different kind of value.

Tank: create usable space

Blizzard describes Tank heroes as characters who “soak up damage and shatter fortified positions,” such as grouped enemies and narrow chokepoints. In practical play, a Tank creates usable space: ground your teammates can occupy, sightlines they can safely use, and moments in which the enemy must react.

A Tank can create that space by walking into a contested area, using a barrier or defensive ability, threatening a vulnerable enemy, displacing a defender, or forcing opponents to spend important cooldowns. The objective is not to stand in the open and absorb every bullet. It is to make the next action possible for the rest of the team.

Blizzard developer Aaron Keller summarized the job this way: “In Overwatch 2, tanks are the imposing heroes who take the brunt of the fight while enabling their teammates to secure eliminations.” That means timing matters as much as toughness.

  • Before a fight: choose a position your team can reach and identify where you will retreat.
  • When engaging: move decisively enough that your Damage heroes can act on the pressure you create.
  • When resources are low: disengage, preserve defensive cooldowns, and prepare for a second engagement instead of dying first.
  • On the objective: contest space without becoming trapped in a losing position.

A Tank that survives with resources can make two or three useful pushes in a round. A Tank that charges alone and dies usually removes the team’s anchor, sightline protection, and initiation at once.

Damage: convert space into pressure

Damage heroes seek out, engage, and eliminate enemies. Their value is broader than the final elimination count: sustained fire can force a retreat, break a defensive ability, deny a route, or make an enemy Support spend healing instead of utility.

Use the space your Tank creates. From cover, choose targets you can actually reach, keep a reliable sightline, and coordinate bursts with the Tank’s engagement or a Support cooldown. A safe, repeatable amount of damage is more valuable for a new player than a risky attempt at a highlight play.

  • Hitscan-style options reward clear sightlines and immediate shots.
  • Projectile options can pressure routes, corners, and predictable movement.
  • Flankers attack from an unexpected angle but must track escape routes and enemy attention.
  • Area-denial heroes make a route costly or hold a location while the team advances.

There is no permanently best Damage hero independent of map geometry, enemy defenses, balance updates, and your own comfort. If you cannot reach a target safely, change the angle, wait for your Tank’s pressure, or choose a hero whose range solves the problem.

Support: keep allies alive and create advantages

Blizzard calls Support heroes the backbone of a team’s survival. Healing is central, but it is only one part of the role. Supports can boost damage, increase speed, shield or reduce incoming damage, cleanse effects, disable enemies, reveal information, or apply debuffs that make a target easier to defeat.

Support players also have to survive. Maintain line of sight to the teammates you intend to help, keep a retreat path, and avoid standing where an enemy can reach you without passing through your team. Do not spend every cooldown on the Tank if a Damage hero is about to be eliminated or if a defensive ability would stop the enemy’s entry.

  • Sustain: restore health and manage resources so the team can remain in a favorable position.
  • Enable: use speed, damage amplification, or protection when allies are ready to act on it.
  • Disrupt: interrupt, cleanse, debuff, or otherwise reduce the enemy’s ability to execute its plan.
  • Survive: use cover and movement before you are under critical pressure, not after.

A Support who deals safe damage or wins a duel can be decisive, but chasing an enemy away from the team is usually less valuable than preserving your own life and the team’s timing.

Why Role Queue uses one Tank, two Damage, and two Supports

Standard Role Queue locks the composition to 1 Tank + 2 Damage + 2 Supports, commonly written as 1-2-2. One Tank supplies a focal point for space and engagement timing; two Damage heroes provide multiple angles and finishing pressure; and two Supports provide enough sustain and utility to keep the formation functioning.

This is a structure, not a guarantee of victory. The heroes inside each slot, their ranges, and the players’ coordination determine whether the formation works. In Open Queue, players can select different numbers of each role, so 1-2-2 is not a rule for that mode.

Slot Primary team job What success looks like
1 Tank Create and contest usable space; start or deny engagements Teammates can take positions, and the Tank survives long enough to reset or engage again
2 Damage Apply pressure, split attention, and finish reachable targets Enemy health, cooldowns, and routes are continually threatened
2 Supports Sustain allies and add defensive or offensive utility The team remains in the fight while Support abilities create winning moments

Sub-roles: useful clues, not permanent rules

Overwatch 2 also uses sub-roles to signal how certain heroes tend to play. Blizzard’s current overview gives examples rather than a universal formula, and assignments can change. Check the description shown in the client when you select a hero.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Sub-role example What the current description indicates How a beginner can use the clue
Flanker Receives stronger healing from health packs Plan escape routes and use health packs to reduce pressure on your Supports
Recon Reveals damaged enemies below half health Help the team identify low targets and coordinate a finish
Sharpshooter Critical hits reduce movement-ability cooldowns Take deliberate shots from cover and use the resulting mobility to reposition
Specialist Gains reload speed after an elimination Secure a safe finish, then use the faster reload to maintain pressure
Support Survivor Begins passive health regeneration after using a movement ability Use movement defensively, then break line of sight long enough to recover

These labels describe tendencies and bonuses; they do not replace the broad Tank, Damage, and Support responsibilities.

How to build a team composition as a beginner

Start with the Role Queue slots, then answer four questions before changing multiple heroes.

1. How does the team start a fight?

Decide whether your team wants a close-range brawl, a fast dive onto an isolated target, or a long-range poke plan. A brawl needs coordinated movement into nearby space. A dive needs mobility and a clear target. Poke needs sightlines, patience, and a way to punish enemies when they cross open ground.

2. Can the team reach the objective?

Damage alone does not solve a map. Check whether the team has enough mobility, speed, barriers, defensive cooldowns, or cover to cross the route between spawn and the objective. If your heroes can win an aim duel but cannot survive the approach, the composition is missing a transport or protection plan.

3. How does it survive the enemy’s plan?

Identify the threat that is actually ending your fights: burst damage, a dive onto Supports, crowd control, long sightlines, or heavy enemy healing. Choose one swap or positioning adjustment that addresses that threat. A defensive ability used at the right moment can matter more than adding another source of damage.

4. Can several heroes act on the same target?

Look for overlapping ranges and timing. If the Tank forces an enemy into the open, can both Damage heroes see the target? Can a Support amplify, speed, protect, or cleanse the entry? Focus fire and shared cooldown timing are more dependable than five unrelated solo plays.

These questions are coaching axes, not a claim that Blizzard publishes one permanent best composition. Live balance, map geometry, player skill, and hero comfort all change the answer.

Three beginner-friendly composition patterns

Pattern Core idea Works best when Common failure Beginner adjustment
Brawl A durable Tank, short-to-mid-range Damage heroes, and Supports that provide sustain or speed move together. The objective has nearby cover and the team can approach as a group. Players arrive at different times and allow the enemy to isolate them. Set one regroup point and wait for both Supports before pushing.
Dive A mobile Tank and mobile Damage heroes isolate a vulnerable target, while Supports follow or stabilize the entry. The enemy has exposed backline players or limited escape tools. The team enters without an exit plan and loses the first target. Call the target, use one synchronized entry, and leave before the counterattack.
Poke Tank and Damage heroes pressure from range while Supports preserve sightlines and resources. The map offers long angles and the enemy must cross open space. The team gives up ground without dealing meaningful pressure or is rushed at close range. Hold a retreat corner and swap one slot if the enemy consistently reaches you.
Mixed or adaptation Keep one clear win condition and change one slot to answer the enemy. Your original plan partly works but has one identifiable weakness. Players replace the entire composition after every lost fight. Make one understandable swap, then test it for a full engagement.

Choosing the best role for a new player

There is no universally best role. Choose the role whose decision-making you can practice consistently, then learn a small hero pool rather than switching after every defeat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose Tank if you enjoy setting the pace, contesting ground, and making the first positional decision. You must accept that the enemy will often focus you.
  • Choose Damage if you enjoy aiming, selecting targets, and finding safe angles. Learn to retreat when attention turns toward you.
  • Choose Support if you like tracking teammates, timing utility, and balancing healing with pressure. Practice survival and line-of-sight discipline.

For your first sessions, keep the learning goal narrow: a Tank can practice engaging only when allies are nearby; a Damage player can practice using cover and focusing one target; a Support can practice maintaining a retreat path and saving one defensive cooldown for the enemy’s entry. Improvement comes from repeatable decisions, not from selecting the role with the highest theoretical impact.

How a coordinated fight should flow

Before the engagement

  • Regroup so all five players can contribute.
  • Identify the route, cover, and the enemy position that matters most.
  • Check key cooldowns: the Tank’s defensive or movement tool, the Supports’ emergency abilities, and the Damage heroes’ burst or escape options.

During the engagement

  • The Tank claims a position or forces a response rather than wandering into open space.
  • Damage heroes attack the same reachable target or deny the route the enemy needs.
  • Supports keep allies alive while using utility at the moment it changes the exchange.

After the first elimination or setback

  • If your team has the advantage, secure the objective and watch for the enemy’s return instead of chasing indefinitely.
  • If the fight is lost, retreat together, avoid staggered deaths, and rebuild cooldowns before the next contest.

Common beginner mistakes and precise fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix for the next fight
The Tank dies before anyone can act Engaging alone or staying after defensive resources are gone Wait for teammates, use cover, and disengage when the resource cycle ends
Damage has high eliminations but the objective is lost Chasing isolated targets away from the team’s route Take angles that protect the objective and return after each pursuit
Supports are eliminated first No retreat path or all attention fixed on healing the Tank Play near cover, track the enemy entry, and reserve movement or protection
Every fight looks different and none succeeds Five heroes are following separate plans Choose brawl, dive, or poke and synchronize one engagement
The team swaps constantly Reacting to a lost fight without identifying the actual problem Change one slot only when you can name the range, mobility, survivability, or target-access issue it solves

When should you change heroes?

Swap when the current hero cannot perform the team’s win condition under the conditions in front of you, not simply because one fight was lost. Useful signals include:

  • Your team cannot cross the map’s open section without losing a player.
  • The enemy’s dive reaches a Support every engagement and your current tools cannot peel or escape.
  • Your Damage heroes cannot obtain a safe sightline or reach the enemy’s priority target.
  • The enemy repeatedly survives because your team has no answer to its healing, defensive cooldown, or crowd control.
  • Your composition has no shared engagement timing, even after regrouping and communicating a target.

Make the smallest swap that addresses the signal, explain the new plan in simple terms, and give it a complete engagement before judging it. A composition is successful when its five players can execute the same idea, not when its labels match a timeless tier list.

What “good” looks like while you learn

Track decisions you can control instead of relying on a single match result. Ask whether your Tank created space your team could use, whether Damage pressure forced the enemy to spend resources, and whether Supports survived long enough to provide both sustain and utility. These questions reveal more than a raw elimination total.

Blizzard has described sub-roles as something intended to grow with the game and with its players. Treat the in-client descriptions as guidance, keep your broad role responsibility in view, and expect hero details and balance to change over time. No official source establishes a universal beginner composition or a dependable beginner win-rate percentage, so evaluate a plan by its map fit, enemy matchup, execution, and the clarity of its win condition.
