Funselektor describes over the hill as “an offroad exploration game.” That label matters: this is not structured around lap times, ranked races, or constant high-speed competition. Steam’s description puts it plainly: “This is a driving game, not a racing game. Take your time, enjoy the drive, find your own route, and see where the road leads.”

You drive 4×4 vehicles inspired by models from the 1960s through the 1980s across difficult trails and scenic environments. The challenge comes from reading terrain, choosing a route, managing difficult surfaces and working out how to reach places that are not obvious from the starting point. The pace is intentionally slower than a conventional racing game, making sightseeing and experimentation part of the main loop rather than a break from it.
Exploration is tied to light progression. Portals open access to new areas, while objectives unlock additional vehicles, upgrades, customizations and cosmetic items. You can therefore approach the game in two ways: roam simply to see what is beyond the next ridge, or pursue objectives to expand your vehicle and appearance options. Neither approach requires you to treat every drive as a competition.

World systems that shape each drive
- Dynamic weather: Conditions can change while you are exploring, altering the atmosphere and potentially how a trail feels.
- Day and night cycles: The same route can look and feel different depending on the time of day.
- Terrain deformation: The ground reacts realistically to vehicles, so existing tracks and surfaces are part of your route planning.
- Campfires: These provide a visual and functional landmark in the wilderness-focused structure.
- Photo mode: You can stop to frame scenery, vehicles and changing conditions instead of treating the environment as background decoration.
Those systems explain why the game is often described as a relaxed or cozy driving experience even though trails can be technically demanding. The difficulty is about finding a workable line and solving a route, not about beating an opponent to a finish line. Polygon’s Steam-page quote calls it “the cozy driving game” and says, “I’m in love.” That is a useful description of the intended mood, but it should not be mistaken for a promise that every trail is effortless.
Over the Hill editions and current Steam prices
Steam currently shows three separate purchases. The base game is the one that contains the playable off-road experience. The Supporter Edition and soundtrack are listed as add-ons rather than replacement versions of the game.

What comes with the Supporter Edition?
Steam lists the Supporter Edition as a $9.99 add-on, but the information available here does not provide an itemized list of included digital goods, vehicles, cosmetics or soundtrack files. Do not assume that it adds playable content simply because it has a separate name. Open the current Supporter Edition description before purchasing and confirm exactly what it contains in your region. The base game is the purchase that grants access to the actual driving and exploration experience.
Which edition should you buy?
- Choose the base game if you are evaluating the concept, want the most straightforward purchase, or mainly care about driving and exploration.
- Add the Supporter Edition only after reading its live item description and deciding that the listed extras or the act of supporting the developers justify the additional $9.99.

The game’s objectives and portals give co-op partners something concrete to do, but you are not required to maintain a competitive pace. One player can scout a route while another tries a different line, and the group can stop at a campfire or use photo mode without turning the session into a race. Online co-op still depends on a working internet connection; Steam includes broadband internet in the listed PC requirements.

Controller support and input choices
Steam names Xbox and PlayStation controllers specifically and the developers recommend playing with a controller. That recommendation fits an off-road game: analog steering and trigger-based throttle or braking generally make careful positioning easier than binary keyboard inputs.

Using a controller on PC
- Connect a supported Xbox or PlayStation controller by USB or pair it through your computer’s Bluetooth settings.
- Start Steam and launch over the hill. Confirm that the game detects the controller before beginning a long expedition.
- Open the game’s control or input settings and check steering, throttle, brake, camera and photo-mode bindings.
- If Steam does not detect an input correctly, use Steam Input for that game and test the default layout before creating custom bindings.
- Keep the controller connected while launching if the game appears to default to keyboard prompts; reconnecting after launch can require restarting the game.

How to interpret the GPU and RAM floor
The GTX 1070 and Radeon RX 5600 are the most consequential parts of the listed minimum. Integrated graphics or a much older entry-level discrete GPU should not be treated as equivalent merely because the game looks relaxed. Terrain deformation, weather, lighting changes and a large scenic view can be more demanding than a simple track-based racer.

Storage and installation planning
The published requirement is 4 GB of available storage. Keep more than 4 GB free so Steam can download, unpack and update the installation without filling the drive. For a practical Deck purchase, remember that Verified status does not change the game’s store requirements or guarantee a particular battery life, frame rate or graphics setting. The game still needs its 4 GB installation space, and online co-op still needs a network connection. Because the developers recommend a controller and the Deck has built-in game controls, the handheld format matches the intended input style particularly well.

Start with a route, not a race
