CHOICE lists a broad range of insured events, but its public review page does not show the policy’s numerical score or price score. That means it is not possible to call it the best or cheapest option from the published review alone.
Who provides Over Fifty Home and Contents insurance?
CHOICE identifies Allianz Australia Insurance Limited as the provider of Over Fifty Home and Contents insurance. The policy is sold under the Over Fifty name, but the insurer and the policy wording—not the brand name alone—are central to understanding the cover. Over Fifty says its website provides only “a limited summary of cover” and directs customers to the applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Key Fact Sheets for full terms, limits and exclusions. Over Fifty’s home insurance page and its policy-document index provide those materials.

The document index identifies PDS policies effective from 21 December 2025 for a class where flood cover is standard. It also says domestic workers’ compensation can no longer be added to a Home and Contents policy. Those details do not automatically apply to every policy: check the effective date and flood arrangement that match the quote and policy schedule you receive.

You nominate a building sum insured and a separate contents sum insured. These are the limits you select for the respective parts of the policy; they are not an automatic valuation of your home or belongings. If a selected limit does not reflect the relevant replacement or repair costs, the policy may not provide enough cover for a major loss.
#1 Best Overall
- Building: estimate the amount needed to repair or rebuild the insured home, using the policy’s definition of building and applicable terms.
- Contents: estimate the replacement value of the belongings you want insured, and account for any item-specific limits or exclusions.
- Record your contents: an inventory with item descriptions, photographs and estimated values can help you build and update the estimate. A home inventory record book is one optional format; it is not an insurer requirement.
What events does the policy cover?
CHOICE’s review snapshot lists cover for a number of insured events. The summary below is not a substitute for the policy wording: definitions, exclusions, waiting periods and rules about what caused the damage can affect whether a claim is covered. CHOICE’s review page does not display a publication date, so confirm the details in the PDS and schedule that apply to your policy.
| Event or feature | What CHOICE’s review snapshot says |
|---|---|
| Theft | Listed as covered, including theft by tenants renting a separate dwelling at the address. Theft by residents, invited people, employees, or people acting with consent is excluded. |
| Bushfire and grassfire | Listed as covered, with a 72-hour waiting period. |
| Flood and run-off | Listed as covered, including specified earth movement directly caused by flood within 72 hours, subject to exclusions and a 72-hour waiting period. |
| Storm and cyclone | Listed cover includes storm, cyclone, rainwater and run-off, and water entering openings made by the storm. CHOICE lists a 72-hour cyclone waiting period. Storm surge and action of the sea are listed as not covered. |
| Escape of water | Listed for specified fixed pipes, appliances, sinks, baths, tanks, pools and other apparatus. Gradual leaks a policyholder could reasonably have been expected to know about, defective parts and certain shower-area damage are among the listed exclusions. |
| Other events | CHOICE also lists vandalism, impact, earthquake, tsunami and explosion. |
Flood, run-off and the waiting period
CHOICE’s snapshot describes flood cover for flood, run-off and specified earth movement directly caused by flood within 72 hours, but also lists exclusions and a 72-hour waiting period. The insurer’s current policy-document index distinguishes PDS documents by flood-cover arrangement. Confirm that flood is included in the specific policy being quoted and read the PDS definition and exclusions rather than relying on the general event list.
Storm, cyclone and water damage
CHOICE lists exclusions for storm and cyclone damage that include hydrostatic pressure, poor maintenance, known defects or deterioration, and certain pool or retaining-wall damage. It also lists storm surge and action of the sea as not covered. For escape of water, the review summary describes cover for certain sudden escape scenarios but excludes some gradual leaks and defective parts.

CHOICE separately lists Over Fifty as covered for gradual leaks in a comparison article. Read that alongside the specific exclusions: it indicates that some gradual-leak situations may be covered, not that every leak is insured. Whether a particular leak is covered depends on its circumstances and the applicable policy wording.
Rank #3
What does contents insurance include?
The contents portion insures covered household belongings up to the nominated contents sum insured, subject to policy definitions, exclusions and item limits. CHOICE’s review lists new-for-old replacement for contents, with mobile phones and tablets excluded from that feature. It also lists up to $2,000 for contents kept in the open air and selected limits for jewellery, artworks and collections. These are review-page summaries, not guarantees that every item or loss is covered; check the PDS and schedule for conditions and sublimits.
Which cover is optional?
Accidental damage
CHOICE lists accidental damage as optional. Examples in its review include accidental damage to the home or contents, motor burnout, certain water entering through an open door or window, overflow from a tap left running with the plug in, scorching or melting, ceramic tiles, and specified electronic screens. The examples and eligibility may be subject to limits, excesses and conditions in the current documents.
Rank #4
Portable contents
CHOICE also lists optional portable-contents cover. Its review snapshot describes a selected overall limit of $1,000–$7,500 for unspecified portable items, with per-item limits of $500–$2,000. Treat these as the review’s stated specifications, not as a current offer for every quote; confirm the available limits, covered locations and item requirements in the PDS and policy schedule.
What limits and conditions affect the practical value?
- Legal liability: CHOICE lists cover up to $20 million.
- Temporary accommodation: CHOICE lists cover for up to 12 months or 10% of the sum insured. Check the policy wording for how the limit applies.
- Unoccupied home: CHOICE says the insurer must be notified if the home will be unoccupied for more than 60 days.
- Claims: CHOICE lists online claims and a 24/7 phone claims service.
- Waiting periods and maintenance: the review lists 72-hour waiting periods for several events and notes that waiting periods, causation rules and maintenance-related exclusions apply.
Because these figures come from CHOICE’s review snapshot, use the current PDS and schedule to confirm the applicable limit, trigger, excess and conditions before relying on them.
Best Value
Is Over Fifty Home and Contents insurance any good?
CHOICE says the policy’s cover is identical to eight other policies in its comparison, though prices may differ. It scores the policy on cover only because the insurer does not share its price data. The open review page does not disclose a numerical cover score, overall Expert Rating, price score, member recommendation or customer-satisfaction results. Without those results and a current quote, the public review does not support a verdict that this policy is best, cheapest or better value than a specific alternative.
CHOICE’s published Expert Rating method combines a Cover score weighted at 60% and a national Price score weighted at 40%; the methodology was last updated in 2024. Its described method also gives a lower component score to cover available only as an optional extra than to the same cover included by default. That weighting explains why comparing policy names or event lists alone is not enough: price and whether a feature is standard or optional both matter.
How to compare it with another home policy
- Get comparable quotes. Use the same property details, building and contents estimates, payment frequency and cover choices for each insurer. Compare the actual annual premiums rather than relying on a third-party price estimate.
- Match the sums insured. Confirm that each quote uses the same building and contents limits, and check what each policy means by building and contents.
- Compare excesses. Check the excess that would apply to relevant claims, including any event-specific excesses shown in the quote or documents.
- Check event wording. Compare flood, storm, cyclone, escape-of-water and theft definitions, waiting periods, exclusions and maintenance conditions—not just whether an event appears in a summary list.
- Separate included cover from add-ons. Note whether accidental damage and portable contents are standard or optional, what they cost, and what limits and per-item caps apply.
- Review practical limits. Compare temporary accommodation, liability, contents kept outside, specified valuables, unoccupancy requirements and replacement terms.
- Read documents for the quoted policy. Check its PDS, Key Fact Sheets and policy schedule, including the document effective date and any applicable flood-cover arrangement.
CHOICE’s review is useful for identifying features to investigate, but its public page does not provide the full numerical results needed to rank Over Fifty by value. A live, like-for-like quote and the applicable policy documents are essential to a meaningful comparison.
