Choose Outriders if you want a contained third-person campaign, four class-based builds, customizable gear, and solo or three-player PvE that you can approach at your own pace. Choose Destiny 2 if you want a much wider shared activity catalogue, cross-platform fireteams, and a game that can keep supplying different raids, dungeons, competitive matches, and destination activities.
The trade-off is important in 2026. Outriders is the more bounded campaign-and-build experience, while Destiny 2 is the broader platform-spanning service game—but Bungie says its planned live-service content updates ended with Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026. That does not make either game universally better. It changes which one fits the way you play, the people you play with, and how much paid content you are willing to buy.

Outriders and Destiny 2 in one sentence each
Outriders is officially described by Square Enix as a third-person, one-to-three-player co-op RPG shooter. Its structure is easy to understand: move through a campaign, choose one of four classes, collect weapons and armor, modify those items, and refine a build for tougher encounters. You can play alone, or bring up to two friends for drop-in, drop-out co-op.

Choose Outriders if you want a focused PvE shooter
A campaign loop with a clear endpoint
Outriders is a good match for players who want to move through a campaign, improve a character, and tackle harder encounters without learning a large ecosystem of seasonal activities. The official description calls it an RPG shooter rather than a competitive service game. That framing matters: your time is spent on missions, combat encounters, loot decisions, and build refinement.
The one-to-three-player format also keeps the social commitment small. You can play solo, invite one friend, or fill the full three-person group. Drop-in, drop-out co-op means a friend does not have to be present for every mission. If your ideal session is a few campaign chapters or a targeted gear hunt rather than a long scheduled raid, this structure is easier to manage.
Four classes and equipment you can modify
Square Enix describes four unique classes, each with its own skill trees. That gives you four different starting points for deciding how your character survives, deals damage, and supports a group. The publisher also describes guns and gear that can be customized and upgraded, so loot is not merely a sequence of higher numbers. You can evaluate an item for its mod potential and how it fits the build you are trying to create.
This is a useful distinction for players who like tinkering. The relevant question is not whether Outriders has more build depth than Destiny 2; the available official material does not establish a fair one-to-one measurement. The practical question is whether class trees and moddable equipment are the kind of progression you want to spend time with.
Worldslayer for a longer build chase
Worldslayer extends the Outriders framework with additional progression systems: PAX trees, Ascension, Apocalypse Gear, and the Trial of Tarya Gratar endgame activity. These additions give experienced players more ways to specialize a character and a dedicated challenge to pursue after the base campaign.
Worldslayer is therefore relevant if you are not looking for a short campaign-only purchase. It adds a second layer of progression and an endgame destination, but it also means you should verify which edition includes it before buying. Square Enix lists a Complete Edition containing Outriders, Worldslayer, and the Hell’s Rangers content pack; current store format, stock, and regional availability were not established.

The always-online limitation
Outriders can be played solo, but Square Enix support says an internet connection is required even for single-player. It is not an offline game in the conventional sense. Check your connection and platform account requirements before choosing it for travel, unreliable broadband, or a device that you expect to use away from a network.
Choose Destiny 2 if variety and cross-platform friends matter most
A larger menu of activities
Destiny 2’s strongest advantage in this comparison is breadth. Bungie’s documented activity structure includes Vanguard operations, Crucible matches, raids, dungeons, and destination activities. Those modes ask for different amounts of time, coordination, and competitive focus. You can switch from a cooperative activity to player-versus-player matches, then join a raid or explore a destination rather than repeating one campaign loop.
That variety is valuable when a regular group has different tastes. One player can prefer structured PvE, another can want Crucible, and a third can be interested in a raid or dungeon. The cost is complexity: activity names, ownership requirements, power and reward systems, and matchmaking rules take more effort to understand than Outriders’ compact campaign structure.
Cross-platform fireteams
Bungie’s Destiny 2 Cross Play documentation says cross-play is enabled by default, allowing fireteams across supported platforms. Non-competitive matchmaking spans platforms, while competitive matchmaking uses separate console and PC pools. This makes Destiny 2 the safer choice when your friends do not all own the same type of hardware and you plan to play regularly together.
Do not assume that cross-play makes every activity identical. Matchmaking behavior differs between competitive and non-competitive modes, and some activities still depend on ownership, group size, or a fireteam finding enough players. Confirm the activity’s requirements before promising a raid night to a mixed-platform group.
Free entry does not mean complete access
Bungie says some Destiny 2 content is available at no cost, but expansions, packs, Reward Passes, and Dungeon Keys are paid. Selected raids and dungeons require the corresponding ownership. Treat the free install as an entry point, not as a guarantee that every campaign or endgame activity is open.
A sensible buying decision starts with the exact activity you want. If your group names a particular raid, dungeon, or expansion campaign, check its current entitlement and regional price before purchasing. The reviewed material does not establish current prices, promotions, or affiliate availability, so do not rely on an old bundle name or a past sale.
How the progression systems differ
Outriders: class identity plus mod decisions
- Choose one of four classes, each with its own skill tree.
- Use skill-tree choices to shape how the class performs.
- Collect guns and gear that can be customized and upgraded.
- If you own Worldslayer, continue into PAX trees, Ascension, Apocalypse Gear, and Trial of Tarya Gratar.
The result is a progression path that stays close to your character. A new item matters because it may unlock a better combination of mods or support a different version of your chosen class. Players who enjoy experimenting with one build until it feels coherent will find that structure easy to read.

Destiny 2: gear connected to activities
Destiny 2’s official material reviewed for this comparison emphasizes weapons, armor, activities, and expansion-linked content. It does not provide a directly comparable measure of build depth, so claims that one game has “more” or “less” depth would be misleading. In practice, Destiny 2’s progression is tied to the activity catalogue: the rewards and ownership rules for a Vanguard activity, Crucible match, raid, dungeon, or destination can differ.
Choose Destiny 2 if you enjoy learning which activity supplies a desired reward and changing modes when your group’s mood changes. Choose Outriders if you would rather make the class-and-gear system itself the center of your planning.
Co-op, solo play, and platform questions answered
Can I play Outriders alone?
Yes. Outriders supports solo play, but the official support information says an internet connection is still required. Solo means you do not need other players, not that the game works offline.

How many people can play Outriders together?
Up to three players total: one host and up to two friends. Square Enix describes the co-op as drop-in, drop-out, so players can join or leave without requiring a fixed four-person squad.

Yes, Destiny 2 supports cross-platform fireteams and enables cross-play by default across supported platforms. Non-competitive matchmaking uses cross-platform pools. Competitive matchmaking distinguishes console and PC pools, so the rules are not identical in every mode.
Does Outriders support cross-play?
The supplied official material confirms Outriders platforms and three-player co-op, but it does not establish a current, complete cross-play compatibility matrix. If your purchase depends on joining friends on another platform, verify the current platform combination and edition support before buying rather than assuming that the listed platforms can all play together.

Outriders checklist
- Confirm whether you are buying the base game or an edition that includes Worldslayer.
- Check whether the Hell’s Rangers content pack is included in the edition offered in your region.
- Verify the current platform listing and whether the store version matches the platform your friends use.
- Plan for an internet connection even when playing the campaign alone.
- Do not assume that a historical product page reflects current retail format, stock, or price.
Destiny 2 checklist
- Identify the specific campaign, raid, dungeon, or destination you want to play.
- Check whether that activity is free or requires an expansion, pack, Reward Pass, or Dungeon Key.
- Confirm that every member of your fireteam owns the required content where ownership is necessary.
- Use the cross-play rules for the mode you intend to play; competitive matchmaking treats console and PC pools differently from non-competitive activities.
- Check current regional pricing and entitlements, because older bundle descriptions can become inaccurate.
Which game fits common player profiles?
Mostly solo players
Outriders is the cleaner fit if you want a campaign that can be completed alone while still offering class and gear experimentation. Its internet requirement is the main limitation. Destiny 2 can also be played solo in many activities, but its broader structure makes more sense when you are willing to explore a shared catalogue and accept that some content is designed around groups or gated behind ownership.
Two or three friends who want straightforward PvE
Outriders fits a small, stable group that wants to advance through the same campaign and compare builds. Its three-player cap is a benefit when your regular party naturally has one to three people. Destiny 2 is better if that group sometimes grows, wants raids or dungeons, or wants to switch into Crucible and other activities.
Friends on different platforms
Destiny 2 has the clearer documented advantage because cross-play fireteams are enabled by default and non-competitive matchmaking spans platforms. Outriders should be considered only after you verify the exact cross-play combination your group needs.

Players who dislike ongoing content churn
Outriders’ established campaign and expansion structure may feel easier to plan around. Destiny 2 remains playable, but Bungie says planned live-service content updates ended with Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026. If you prefer a game with a known, bounded content package, that support status is relevant; if you wanted a stream of planned new releases, it is a drawback.
Players who want the widest activity choice
Destiny 2 is the obvious fit on the evidence available: Vanguard, Crucible, raids, dungeons, and destination activities cover more types of sessions than Outriders’ campaign-and-build loop. You still need to budget for the specific paid content attached to the activities you care about.
Destiny 2’s 2026 support change
Bungie’s official support documentation states: “Following the release of Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026, Destiny 2 will no longer receive planned live-service content updates.” Bungie also indicates that the game is intended to remain playable and that stability hotfixes may still be issued.

It means you should separate two questions: whether the existing activity library is worth playing now, and whether you are choosing the game for future scheduled content. The first depends on the activities and entitlements you want. The second is no longer a reason to expect a continuing planned content roadmap after that update.
What this comparison cannot tell you
This is a feature-based comparison, not a hands-on performance test. The available official information does not establish current player population, server health, frame-rate differences, hardware performance, regional pricing, physical retail availability, or player sentiment for either game. It also does not provide a current Outriders cross-play matrix or a numerical comparison of build depth.
Use the feature facts to narrow your choice, then verify the volatile details on the store and support pages for your platform and region. In particular, check activity ownership in Destiny 2, edition contents for Outriders, and the platform combination your friends will use.
Bottom line: campaign focus or activity breadth?
Outriders is the better fit for a solo player or small PvE group that wants four classes, moddable equipment, a campaign, and a defined progression path. Worldslayer adds PAX trees, Ascension, Apocalypse Gear, and Trial of Tarya Gratar for players who want more build and endgame layers. The requirement for an internet connection during solo play is its most important practical caveat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDestiny 2 is the better fit for players who value cross-platform fireteams and a broad selection of cooperative, competitive, raid, dungeon, and destination activities. Its free content is only part of the picture: expansions, packs, Reward Passes, Dungeon Keys, and ownership requirements can determine what your group can actually play. After June 9, 2026, choose it for the existing game and its activity variety, not on the assumption that planned live-service content updates will continue.
