Start with your Outlook edition
The most common explanation is not a broken printer but a feature difference. Microsoft documents Quick Print for attachments in classic Outlook, while the feature is currently unavailable in New Outlook for Windows.

Classic Outlook
Open an email, select the attachment’s drop-down menu, and choose Quick Print. Classic Outlook sends the attachment directly to the Windows default printer. It does not open a printer-selection dialog first.
New Outlook for Windows
New Outlook does not offer the attachment Quick Print command. Use Preview > Print or Open > Print instead. If you are following instructions that mention an attachment drop-down with Quick Print but cannot find it, the edition mismatch is the reason.

When in doubt, inspect the attachment menu in the open message. The presence of Quick Print indicates classic Outlook; its absence in New Outlook is expected behavior, not a damaged installation.
How Quick Print chooses a printer
Quick Print has no destination choice of its own: “The attachment is sent directly to the default printer.” That design explains two frequent complaints:
- The job goes to a different printer because Windows has another device set as default.
- The job fails because the default device is offline, paused, unavailable, or a label printer that cannot handle the attachment format.
To use a different printer, open the attachment in its associated application and print there. A manual print dialog lets you select the destination and inspect its status before sending the job.

1. Confirm that the command should exist
- Open the message containing the attachment.
- In classic Outlook, open the attachment menu and look for Quick Print.
- In New Outlook, choose Preview > Print or Open > Print instead.
Do not try to restore Quick Print in New Outlook through printer settings; Microsoft currently does not provide that command in the new Windows client.
2. Make the intended printer the Windows default
Because Quick Print bypasses printer selection, set the device you actually want to use as the Windows default and verify that it is ready.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the intended printer.
- Use the option to set it as the default printer if it is not already default.
- Check the printer’s panel or Windows status for Ready, and make sure it is powered on, connected, and not paused.
If you only need another printer for one job, do not change the default permanently. Open the attachment and use that application’s File > Print command to choose the device.
3. Open files Outlook cannot preview
Quick Print depends on Outlook’s ability to handle the attachment. Some file types cannot be previewed in Outlook, and a preview failure can look like a printer failure.

- Choose Save As or Open on the attachment and store it locally if necessary.
- Open the saved file in its associated program.
- Print from that program, selecting the printer, page range, paper size, and other options.
For example, open a DOC attachment in Word and a PDF in a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader, then print with the application’s own print command. This route also works when the file type is supported by Windows but not by Outlook’s preview pane.
4. Check whether the problem is Outlook or Windows
Print a small document from another program before changing Outlook settings. Notepad, WordPad, or another simple application is useful because it removes the email attachment from the test.
- Create or open a short text document in Notepad or WordPad.
- Choose File > Print and select the same printer.
- Record whether the page prints, remains queued, or produces an error.
If the test document also fails, the problem is not specific to the Microsoft 365 app. Investigate the printer connection, Windows queue, or driver. If the test prints normally, continue with Outlook and Office checks.

For a document that fails only in an Office application, create a new blank test file and print it. A successful blank-file test points to the original document’s content, formatting, or corruption rather than to the printer path.
5. Inspect the manual print settings
In classic Outlook, select File > Print or press Ctrl+P. In New Outlook, use its Preview > Print or Open > Print route. Before sending the job, check:
- Printer: the intended physical device is selected, not an old, offline, or virtual printer.
- Status: Windows reports the device as ready.
- Page range: the required pages are included and the range is not empty.
- Paper and orientation: page size, portrait or landscape orientation, and layout match the document.
- Output target: Print to PDF or Print to file is not selected accidentally.
- Copies and properties: number of copies, duplex, color, tray, and other device-specific settings are correct.
Manual printing is also the correct method when you need a printer other than the Windows default.
6. Print a Windows test page
A Windows test page separates an Outlook problem from a printer or driver problem.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer and open its printer properties or management page.
- Choose Print Test Page.
If Windows cannot print its own test page, Outlook is not the root cause. Resolve the device connection, queue, or driver first. If the test page works but Outlook does not, return to the attachment type, Outlook edition, and Office print path.

7. Restart the Windows print path
A stuck spooler can prevent jobs from leaving Outlook even when the printer appears connected.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
- Close and reopen Outlook, then retry a small print job.
Restart the computer as well if the queue remains stuck. A restart clears transient communication problems between Outlook, the spooler, and the printer.
8. Update or reinstall the printer driver
If Windows test printing fails or jobs repeatedly disappear, update the driver rather than repeatedly retrying Quick Print.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the printer-related device category and select the affected printer.
- Use the driver update option, or uninstall the device and add it again through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Print a Windows test page before testing Outlook again.
Driver work is less reversible than changing a default-printer setting, so perform it only after confirming that the failure extends beyond Outlook or that Windows reports a driver issue.

When Notepad or WordPad prints successfully but Office applications do not, repair the Office installation.

- Open Windows installed-app settings and locate Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Choose Modify or Change.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- Restart Windows and test printing.
- If the failure remains, repeat the process with Online Repair.
Online Repair is more extensive and may require a reliable internet connection. Use it after the less disruptive Quick Repair, not as the first response to a wrong default printer.

Manual printing options when Quick Print is unsuitable
Quick Print is deliberately minimal. The manual route gives you control over the email, attachment, destination, and layout.
Print an entire email
Open the message, choose File > Print, or press Ctrl+P. Select the printer and adjust the available print options before confirming.
Choose an Outlook print style
Classic Outlook can offer styles such as Memo and Table, depending on the item being printed. Select the style that matches the message or list you need on paper, then review the preview before printing.
Control attachments, pages, and copies
The print dialog can include or exclude attachments, limit a page range, set the number of copies, and open the printer’s properties for duplex, color, tray, and paper settings. These controls are unavailable when Quick Print sends the attachment directly to the default device.
Print only a selected part of a message
When you need only a section of an email, open the message in a browser and use the browser’s print command. Select the relevant content if the browser supports selection printing, then confirm the page range in the preview.
Why a “working” printer can still fail from Outlook
- Default-device mismatch: Windows may have changed the default after a printer was added, disconnected, or replaced.
- Unsupported preview: Outlook may not be able to render the attachment even though its associated desktop application can.
- Virtual output selected: Print to PDF or Print to file can capture the job instead of sending it to paper.
- Queue or spooler interruption: A stuck Windows service affects every application that uses that printer.
- Office-only damage: If basic Windows programs print but Office programs fail, the Office installation may need repair.
Work through these causes in that order because settings and simple file tests are easy to reverse, while driver replacement and Office Online Repair change more of the system.

Reliable workaround while you diagnose the cause
For an urgent attachment, save it locally and print from Word, a PDF reader, or the application associated with its file type. For an email, use File > Print or Ctrl+P, select the exact printer, and verify the preview and page range. This bypasses Quick Print’s default-printer limitation without requiring an immediate driver or Office repair.
