First identify what “not working” means: Is the reaction button missing, does sending a reaction fail, can’t another recipient see it, or is only the notification missing? Those symptoms have different causes. Outlook reactions are not available to every account or mailbox, so check eligibility before troubleshooting the app.
Why can’t I react to an email in Outlook?
Microsoft says reactions are available to individuals using a work or school account in Outlook with a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription. A personal Outlook.com account should not be assumed to qualify. If you use a work or school account and the button is still absent, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to confirm your license and organization’s tenant conditions.

The mailbox on the other end matters too. Reactions work fully when both you and the message sender have Exchange Online mailboxes. If the sender’s mailbox is not on Exchange Online, Outlook may send a fallback email instead of showing a reaction in the message. Shared mailboxes are unsupported. Microsoft’s feature guidance also lists GCC High, DoD, and Gallatin (China) environments as unavailable. See Microsoft’s Outlook reactions eligibility and availability guidance.
Outlook reactions not showing: check who can see them
Recipients in the To and Cc fields can see one another’s reactions. A recipient in Bcc can see their own reaction, and the sender can see it, but other recipients cannot. If you and another participant see different reactions, check how each person was addressed before assuming the reaction failed.

If you use Outlook on the web, check the browser
Use a current browser supported by Microsoft. Its guidance lists Edge, Firefox, or Chrome on Windows 11; Edge, Safari 16 or later, Firefox, or Chrome on macOS; and Firefox or Chrome on Linux, where some features may be unavailable. Browser extensions can also interfere with Outlook.com loading. Microsoft specifically names AdBlock and uBlock as possible sources of problems, but that does not establish that either caused a particular reaction issue.
- Open Outlook in a private or incognito window and check whether the reaction controls work there.
- If they do, temporarily disable relevant ad-blocking or pop-up-blocking extensions in your normal browser and test again.
- Restore your usual browser protections after the test. If the problem persists, check Microsoft’s supported browser guidance and your organization’s browser policies.
If a reaction arrived but you can’t find it
Reaction delivery and notification visibility are separate. Look at the message controls and check Outlook’s Notifications pane. Use its Filter control and review Notification Settings before concluding that a reaction was lost. Microsoft says people who received reactions in the previous day or so may also receive a digest email.

Windows Outlook troubleshooting depends on the app
New Outlook and classic Outlook have different troubleshooting steps. These general app remedies can help with an unresponsive client, but they do not change account, subscription, mailbox, or tenant eligibility.

New Outlook for Windows
If the app is unresponsive, end its task and reopen it. If the issue continues, Microsoft also documents reinstalling new Outlook. Follow the current steps in Microsoft’s Outlook for Windows troubleshooting guidance.
Classic Outlook for Windows
- Install available Windows and Office updates, then restart Outlook. Allow any background processing to finish.
- Start Outlook in Safe Mode with
outlook.exe /safe. If the reaction controls work in Safe Mode, an add-in may be involved. - Disable add-ins, then re-enable them one at a time and test after each change to identify a conflict.
- If the broader Outlook problem remains, Microsoft’s troubleshooting options include creating a new profile, repairing data files with the Inbox Repair Tool, and repairing Office. Use Microsoft’s Safe Mode instructions and Office repair guidance.
When to contact your administrator or Microsoft Support
If you have a qualifying work or school account but still cannot react, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to verify the subscription and tenant conditions. The feature page says rollout across Outlook platforms was complete by September 2023, with the named environment exceptions above; it also notes Version 2308 for Semi-Annual channel users. Availability can depend on an organization’s environment and configuration.

Microsoft’s new Outlook known-issues page was last updated in August 2026 and did not list a reaction-specific issue on the reviewed page. That does not rule out an account-specific or newly emerging problem. Check Microsoft’s current new Outlook known issues, then contact Microsoft Support or your administrator if the problem remains.
