Outdoor Smart Plugs: Best Specification-Based Picks and Buying Guide

There is no single best outdoor smart plug for every installation. The right choice depends on the plug’s weather-resistance rating, the load of the device you will control, your smart-home platform, and whether the connected plug and cord still fit under a weatherproof receptacle cover. Two specification-backed options to compare are TP-Link’s Tapo P400M, rated IP65 with Matter compatibility, and TP-Link’s Kasa EP40A, rated IP64 with two individually controlled outlets and a listed 15 A / 1,875 W total limit.

Those ratings describe the products, not a guarantee that any installation can be submerged or left exposed indefinitely. Outdoor receptacle protection, GFCI requirements, plug orientation, mounting height, and the exact regional model matter just as much. Use the guide below to match a model to your equipment and installation rather than treating a product label as a universal safety approval.

Which outdoor smart plug fits your use?

Choose the Tapo P400M when Matter is central to your setup

The P400M is the more obvious candidate if you want a Matter-capable outdoor plug. TP-Link describes it as an outdoor Wi-Fi smart plug with an IP65 rating, two outlets, and voice control through major assistants. Matter can be useful when you want a device to participate in a compatible multi-brand smart-home platform instead of being tied only to one manufacturer’s app.

Do not infer that Matter support makes the plug universally compatible. Matter controller, platform, firmware, account, and regional support still have to line up. Check the current Tapo page and the manual for the model suffix sold where you live. The cited specification does not establish independent weather or reliability testing, a maximum load figure, or whether the two outlets can be switched separately.

Choose the Kasa EP40A when independent outlet control and a known load limit matter

The EP40A is easier to evaluate for installations where you need two connected devices to be scheduled separately. Its two outlets are listed as individually controllable, and TP-Link publishes a total maximum of 15 A / 1,875 W at 125 V and 60 Hz. That makes it possible to plan around a stated electrical limit instead of guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kasa lists Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings compatibility for the EP40A. Its outdoor rating is IP64, and the product is listed as ETL certified. Treat the 15 A / 1,875 W number as the combined limit for both outlets. It does not mean that each outlet may independently draw 15 A at the same time.

When neither specification is enough

If your appliance has a motor, heating element, pump, compressor, or a high start-up surge, the nameplate running wattage alone may not be sufficient. Look for the device’s running current, starting current, and any manufacturer restriction on timer or smart-plug use. If the smart-plug documentation does not state that type of load is supported, ask a qualified electrician or the manufacturer rather than assuming the outlet rating covers it.

What IP64 and IP65 actually tell you

An IP code is a product-specific enclosure rating. The first digit concerns solid-particle protection and the second concerns water exposure under defined test conditions. IP65 and IP64 are not interchangeable labels, and neither means the plug can be submerged, buried, sprayed from every direction, or left in standing water.

  • Trusted and Reliable: Kasa is trusted by over 6 Million users and being the Reader’s Choice of PCMag 2020. 2-year warranty.

For these examples, TP-Link lists IP65 for the Tapo P400M and IP64 for the Kasa EP40A. The P400M’s higher water-protection digit is a specification difference, not proof that it will outperform the EP40A in a particular garden, patio, or poolside installation. Water can enter through a connected cord, an open socket, a damaged seal, condensation, or the receptacle behind the plug.

  • Keep the plug out of puddles, irrigation spray, snow accumulation, and locations where water can collect.
  • Inspect the housing, cord, and seals for cracks or deformation before every season of outdoor use.
  • Do not use an IP rating as permission to immerse the device or wash it with a hose.
  • Follow the model’s instructions for socket covers, cable routing, orientation, and mounting.

The receptacle cover is part of the installation

A smart plug’s enclosure does not replace the weatherproof enclosure required for the outdoor receptacle. OSHA’s electrical standard states: “A receptacle installed in a wet location where the product intended to be plugged into it is not attended while in use (for example, sprinkler system controllers, landscape lighting, and holiday lights) shall have an enclosure that is weatherproof with the attachment plug cap inserted or removed.”

This matters whenever an outdoor load can run unattended. A standard flip cover may close only when nothing is plugged in; if it cannot close around the smart plug and cord, moisture can reach the receptacle. The cover must be suitable for the receptacle, plug shape, cord direction, and local electrical requirements.

An extra-duty, weatherproof while-in-use cover can be relevant when an existing cover will not close with a plug inserted. Leviton describes its 5981-UCL as an extra-duty cover intended to protect against moisture, debris, insects, and outdoor elements. It is a category example, not a universal fit: confirm the box, receptacle orientation, cover depth, gasket, and local code before installing any replacement.

Electrical load: calculate before you connect anything

Use the total limit, not an attractive per-outlet assumption

For the EP40A, the published maximum is 15 A / 1,875 W total at 125 V and 60 Hz. If two devices are connected, add their expected running loads and leave appropriate headroom for start-up behavior and the circuit’s own limits. Two outlets do not automatically provide two separate 15 A supplies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The P400M specification cited here does not state a maximum load. Do not borrow the EP40A figure for the P400M or infer a rating from the plug’s physical size. Find the exact P400M regional manual or label and compare its limit with the appliance nameplate.

Account for motors, pumps, and heaters

Loads such as pumps, fans, compressors, and some lighting drivers can draw more current briefly when they start. Resistive heaters may draw a large continuous load. A device that appears below the wattage limit during normal operation can still trip a breaker, weld a relay, or overheat a connector if its inrush or duty cycle is unsuitable.

  1. Read the appliance label for volts, amps, and watts.
  2. Identify whether the load is resistive, inductive, electronic, or motor-driven.
  3. For two-outlet models, add both connected loads and compare the sum with the plug’s total rating.
  4. Check the circuit breaker, extension-cord rating, and receptacle rating as separate limits.
  5. Stop if the plug, cord, receptacle, or appliance becomes hot, discolored, noisy, or intermittently disconnected.

Smart-home compatibility and control

Matter and platform support are not the same question

The Tapo P400M is described as Matter compatible and supports voice control through major assistants. Matter support can simplify cross-platform setup, but the controller you own must support the relevant Matter device type and commissioning method. A platform update or regional model difference can change what is available, so verify current support before purchase.

The Kasa EP40A page lists Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings. That list answers which ecosystems TP-Link identifies for the model; it does not guarantee identical features in each app. Scheduling, energy information, firmware updates, naming, and multi-device scenes can vary by platform.

Plan for the network where the receptacle is located

The P400M is explicitly described as a Wi-Fi smart plug. For the EP40A, confirm the network requirements in the current regional documentation. Outdoor walls, masonry, metal enclosures, distance from the router, and electrical equipment can weaken a wireless signal even when a manufacturer advertises an open-area range. A published range is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for an installed property.

Before permanently mounting a plug, pair it indoors or near the access point, update its firmware, and test it at the intended receptacle. If pairing succeeds only when the plug is close to the router, improve network coverage or move the access point rather than relying on repeated reconnects outdoors.

Physical fit: measure the plug, cover, and cord together

Outdoor receptacles vary in box depth, orientation, spacing, and cover style. A smart plug may work electrically yet fail mechanically because its body projects too far, the cord exits upward into the hinge, or a second outlet is blocked.

  • Check whether the plug’s cord exits from the top, bottom, or side and where that places strain on the seal.
  • Confirm that the cover can close with the plug inserted, as required for unattended wet-location loads.
  • Leave enough clearance for the plug’s reset or pairing button and for safe removal.
  • Do not stack adapters or use an indoor extension cord to solve a clearance problem.

If the cover cannot close, choose a properly fitted weatherproof while-in-use enclosure or have the receptacle and box evaluated by a qualified electrician. Do not defeat the cover, tape over a gap, or place the plug inside an unventilated container.

Installation procedure for an outdoor smart plug

1. Confirm the receptacle and circuit

Use an outdoor-rated receptacle protected as required by local rules. Feit Electric’s support guidance, dated September 9, 2024, states for its own smart outdoor plug: “The Smart Outdoor Plug must also be plugged into an outdoor-rated GFCI outlet with the appropriate outdoor cover.” That is manufacturer-specific advice, but it illustrates the protection to verify for any outdoor installation. Test the GFCI using its test and reset controls before connecting equipment.

2. Pair and update before mounting

Install the manufacturer’s app, add the exact model, apply available firmware, and confirm that manual on/off control works. If you are using Matter, complete the platform commissioning steps while the plug is accessible. Label each outlet in the app before attaching equipment so a later schedule cannot turn on the wrong load.

3. Secure the plug as the manual specifies

TP-Link’s EP40 user guide advises securing the plug with its supplied hardware, keeping the socket face down, placing it at least 12 inches above the ground, and covering unused sockets. These instructions apply to that model’s installation; do not transfer the 12-inch measurement to a different product without checking its manual.

4. Route the cord without creating a water path

Make a downward loop so water does not run along the cord into the receptacle or socket. Keep connectors off the ground and away from irrigation heads, drain outlets, snow piles, and locations where lawn equipment can strike them. Use only cords and accessories rated for the environment and load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test with the real load

Turn the appliance on and off manually, then run the intended schedule while watching for nuisance trips, loss of Wi-Fi, heat, buzzing, or unexpected restart behavior. Test both EP40A outlets separately if you use its independent controls. Recheck that the receptacle cover remains weatherproof with the plug inserted.

Common installation failures and fixes

The app cannot find the plug

  • Move the plug near the router or access point for initial pairing.
  • Confirm that the phone is using the network and account required by the model’s current app.
  • Reset the plug exactly as the manual describes, then remove any duplicate device entry.
  • After pairing, test at the outdoor location before final mounting; a weak signal may require better Wi-Fi coverage.

The GFCI trips repeatedly

Disconnect the load and reset the GFCI. Inspect for wet connectors, damaged insulation, overloaded circuits, and water inside the receptacle or plug. Reconnect one device at a time. If the GFCI trips with the smart plug empty and dry, stop using the installation and have the receptacle, wiring, or plug inspected.

The cover will not close

Do not force or defeat the cover. Check whether the plug is upside down, whether the cord exits into the hinge, and whether the cover is designed for an attachment plug to remain inserted. If the existing enclosure still cannot close, install a correctly sized extra-duty while-in-use cover or consult an electrician.

The appliance switches off but does not restart

Some equipment needs a manual reset after power loss or has a controller that does not resume automatically. Test the appliance after a short manual unplug/replug cycle before relying on a schedule. Smart-plug automation cannot override an appliance’s own safety lockout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One outlet behaves differently from the other

On the EP40A, verify that each outlet is assigned and controlled separately in the app. A two-outlet product does not necessarily provide independent switching; the P400M specification cited here does not establish that feature. Check the model’s current manual rather than assuming both sockets have identical controls.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify the load: record voltage, running watts, amps, start-up behavior, and whether the device contains a motor, pump, heater, or compressor.
  2. Choose the control model: select Matter if your controller supports it, or confirm that the listed Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, or SmartThings integration matches your home.
  3. Check the weather rating: compare the exact model’s IP code, but do not treat it as immersion protection or a substitute for a weatherproof receptacle enclosure.
  4. Check outlet behavior: decide whether you need one outlet, two outlets, or independent control of two loads.
  5. Verify the electrical limit: for the EP40A, keep the combined load within 15 A / 1,875 W at 125 V, 60 Hz; obtain the exact limit for any other model.
  6. Measure the installation: confirm box depth, cover clearance, cord direction, mounting space, and access to buttons.
  7. Confirm protection: verify the outdoor receptacle, GFCI protection, weatherproof cover, and local code requirements.
  8. Test connectivity: pair, update, and operate the plug at the intended location before attaching an unattended appliance.

Bottom line for the two documented options

The Tapo P400M is the specification-led choice to investigate when an IP65 outdoor rating and Matter compatibility are priorities. The Kasa EP40A is the clearer fit when you need two individually controlled outlets, ETL certification, and a published combined limit of 15 A / 1,875 W at 125 V and 60 Hz. Neither specification removes the need to protect the receptacle, keep water away, verify the load, and follow the exact model’s installation instructions.

Buy only after confirming the regional model, current platform support, electrical rating, physical cover fit, and current availability. A correctly installed, properly loaded plug is more important than a higher IP number or a longer feature list.
