They are particularly useful for running, commuting, working around other people, and any situation in which hearing voices, traffic, alarms, or announcements matters. The trade-off is unavoidable: outside noise remains audible, bass is usually less forceful than with sealed earbuds, and people nearby may hear some of your audio.
No single model is best for everyone. Clip-on and cuff designs, such as Shokz OpenDots 2 or Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, attach around the ear; open-fit and ear-hook designs sit beside the ear without entering the canal. Bone-conduction headphones are a separate approach that transmits sound through the skull rather than using a conventional speaker beside the ear.

What “out of ear” headphones actually are
“Out of ear” is commonly used to describe open-ear headphones: products that play sound while leaving the ear canal, or much of the outer ear, open to the surroundings. You can hear your playlist and a colleague speaking at the same time. That awareness is the category’s main benefit, not a side effect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There are several distinct fits:
- Clip-on or cuff: A small speaker and battery module clamp around the outer ear. The speaker hovers near the canal without plugging it. This can feel secure and leaves the ear opening unobstructed.
- Open-fit or ear-hook: A curved hook or arm rests over the ear, with the driver positioned just outside the canal. These models often feel lighter than conventional earbuds but depend on the shape of your ear for stability.
- Bone conduction: Transducers press against the bones near the cheek or temple and send vibrations toward the inner ear. They do not use the same air-delivered speaker arrangement as clip-on and open-fit products, so they should be evaluated as a separate category.
Because the fits behave differently, comfort, glasses compatibility, movement stability, call quality, and sound leakage cannot be predicted from the “open-ear” label alone.

Top open-ear picks at a glance
The selections below are attributed to specific 2026 buying guides, not presented as a universal ranking. TechRadar’s guide dated August 17, 2026 names Shokz OpenFit 2+ its best overall choice and places Shokz OpenDots 2 in its premium section. SoundGuys names Nothing Ear (Open) its best overall and also highlights Huawei FreeClip 2, Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, and Shokz OpenFit models.

Documented specifications worth comparing
WIRED’s 2026 guide reports the following model-level specifications. Battery figures are per charge and with the charging case; ingress ratings describe resistance testing, not permission to swim.
Recommended Free Tools
| Model | Battery per charge | Total with case | Bluetooth | Ingress rating | Controls or charging |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shokz OpenDots 2 | 10 hours | 40 hours | 6.1 | IP57 | Wireless charging |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds | 7.5 hours | 27 hours | Not included in the cited specification summary | IPX4 | Physical buttons |
| Soundcore AeroClip | 8 hours | 32 hours | 5.4 | IP55 | Controls not included in the cited specification summary |
IP ratings are not interchangeable. IP57 indicates dust protection and temporary immersion resistance under test conditions; IP55 indicates protection from dust ingress sufficient for operation and water jets; IPX4 indicates splash resistance without a dust rating. Sweat, salt, sunscreen, and repeated exposure can still shorten a product’s life.
How to choose the right fit
Choose clip-on or cuff designs when stability is your priority
A clip-on model grips the ear rather than relying only on friction inside the concha. That can be useful for walking, gym sessions, and other movement where a loose ear-hook might shift. The pressure point is different from an earbud’s seal, however, so people with sensitive cartilage should wear one for a short trial before committing.

Shokz OpenDots 2 is the clearest documented premium clip-on candidate in the current guides. Its reported 10-hour per-charge battery, 40-hour case total, Bluetooth 6.1, IP57 rating, and wireless charging make it attractive when endurance and weather tolerance matter. Verify those specifications with the manufacturer because the guide itself identifies them as source-reported.
Bose Ultra Open Earbuds also use a clip-on arrangement. WIRED reports 7.5 hours per charge, 27 hours including the case, IPX4 protection, and physical button controls. Buttons can be easier to operate with gloves or while moving than tiny touch surfaces, but this model is positioned at a higher price than some rivals.
Huawei FreeClip 2 is SoundGuys’ clip-on choice and is described there as lightweight with an IP57 rating. That combination suits readers who dislike a heavy ear module and expect substantial exposure to sweat or rain, subject to the manufacturer’s care instructions.
Choose open-fit or ear-hook designs when you want a lighter, less clamped feel
Open-fit models rest beside the ear instead of gripping it from both sides. They can disappear during long desk sessions and are often comfortable for people who dislike pressure in the canal. The compromise is that your ear shape determines how well the hook or arm stays in place. Try head turns, stairs, and a short jog before deciding they are secure enough for your activity.
TechRadar’s August 17, 2026 guide names Shokz OpenFit 2+ its best overall option. Treat that as TechRadar’s editorial judgment, not a consensus result. SoundGuys separately names Nothing Ear (Open) its best overall, illustrating why fit, sound preference, and testing priorities matter more than a single league table.

Thanks to USB-C fast charging, the battery is fully recharged in just 1.5 hours – perfect for a dynamic lifestyle.
Consider bone conduction separately
Bone-conduction headphones leave the ear opening exposed, but they do not compete directly with air-delivered clip-on and open-fit speakers. Their vibration-based transmission changes the sensation, bass response, and pressure points. If you are comparing them with open-fit earbuds, assess the listening method first rather than assuming every “open” product will sound or feel alike.
What open-ear sound can and cannot do
Open designs preserve environmental awareness by allowing outside sound to reach your ears. That also means a bus engine, wind, conversation, or office HVAC system competes with your music. In a quiet room, many open-ear models can sound clear and spacious; on a loud street, you may need to raise the volume, which reduces the practical benefit of leaving the canal open.
Omdia identifies three persistent category constraints: sound leakage, limited low-frequency performance, and wind sensitivity. Leakage is the reverse of privacy: a nearby passenger may hear a faint version of your podcast or music, especially at higher volume. Bass is generally less physical than with a sealed in-ear monitor because there is no airtight seal to pressurize the canal. Wind can strike the exposed microphone and speaker area, creating turbulence or masking detail.
Use an open-ear model when awareness matters more than isolation or sub-bass impact. Choose a sealed in-ear or over-ear design when you need strong noise reduction, maximum privacy, or a forceful low end.
Battery, controls, and durability
Battery planning
Per-charge figures tell you how long the headphones can play before returning to the case. Case totals matter for travel but are not a substitute for a long single session. On the documented models, OpenDots 2 leads with 10 hours per charge and 40 hours total; AeroClip reports 8 and 32; Bose Ultra Open reports 7.5 and 27. Real runtime varies with volume, call use, codecs, and temperature.

Physical buttons versus touch controls
Physical buttons provide a definite click and are less likely to trigger accidentally when you adjust glasses, a hat, or the ear piece. Touch controls can be convenient but may respond to rain, hair, or a gloved finger inconsistently. WIRED specifically notes physical buttons on Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. For other models, confirm the control method in the current manual rather than relying on a product photograph.
Water and dust resistance
Match the rating to the activity, not to a marketing adjective. IPX4 is intended for splashes; IP55 adds meaningful dust protection; IP57 offers the strongest rating among the documented choices. None of these ratings makes headphones safe for swimming, and charging wet contacts can cause damage. Wipe sweat and rain away, let the contacts dry, and follow the maker’s limits.

Running and outdoor workouts
Prioritize a stable fit, a rating appropriate for sweat, controls you can operate without looking, and enough battery for the longest session you actually run. Clip-ons can feel reassuring during repeated foot impact; open-fit hooks may feel less clamped over several hours. Keep the volume low enough to hear approaching bicycles, vehicles, and people. Awareness is a design benefit, not a safety guarantee.
Commuting and city walking
Open-ear headphones let announcements and traffic remain audible, but they also let train brakes, road noise, and wind mask your audio. A model with reliable buttons is useful when you need to pause quickly. Leakage can bother fellow passengers, so check the volume by removing one side and asking someone nearby whether they can hear it.

Open-fit designs are practical when you need to hear coworkers without removing an earbud. Keep the volume modest to reduce leakage and fatigue. If confidentiality matters, use a closed design instead; an open speaker cannot guarantee that a call or podcast stays private.

Long flights or noisy travel
Open-ear products are usually a poor substitute for noise-cancelling headphones on an aircraft or beside a loud engine. You may increase volume to overcome the cabin, losing the awareness advantage and potentially exposing your hearing to more sound. Carry a sealed alternative if isolation is essential.
A practical buying and fit test
- Define the activity. Write down whether your priority is running stability, all-day office comfort, commuting awareness, or call handling. The answer determines fit before brand or feature lists.
- Measure your tolerance for pressure. Wear the candidate for 15 to 20 minutes while sitting, walking, and turning your head. Note pressure on cartilage, pinching near glasses, and movement when chewing.
- Check awareness at safe volume. Play familiar speech and walk in a controlled, low-risk area. You should still detect a nearby person speaking; do not test beside traffic by deliberately ignoring your surroundings.
- Test leakage. Ask someone at arm’s length whether they can hear the content. Repeat at the volume you normally use, not only at a quiet demonstration level.
- Test controls in motion. Pause, resume, skip, and answer a call without looking at the phone. Buttons and touch panels behave differently with gloves, sweat, hair, and hats.
- Check charging and storage. Confirm that the case fits your pocket or bag, that the contacts are easy to align, and that the stated battery covers your longest day with reserve.
- Verify the current specification. Before ordering, compare the exact generation, regional availability, warranty, Bluetooth version, and IP rating on the manufacturer’s page. Buying guides can become outdated when a product is revised.
Safety and responsible use
Hearing surrounding sound can improve situational awareness, but open-ear headphones are not protective equipment. Follow local rules for cycling, running events, and road use. Stop playback before crossing complex intersections or entering unfamiliar traffic. Never assume that an open design lets you hear every danger, especially in wind or heavy noise.
Protect your hearing by keeping volume as low as practical, taking breaks, and avoiding the temptation to overpower environmental sound. If you experience ringing, muffled hearing, pain, or dizziness, stop using the headphones and seek medical advice.
What the market data says
Omdia’s 2026 coverage describes a fast-changing open-ear category. It reports that the US$100–150 segment contracted to around 16% in the chart context used by that report; because the cited summary does not fully define that figure as a universal market share, treat it as directional rather than a precise forecast.
The same Omdia coverage cites approximately 247 million US sports and fitness participants in 2024, counting people who took part in at least one activity. It also cites China’s General Administration of Sport estimate of roughly 500 million people exercising regularly, or 37.2% of the population. The national definitions differ, so those totals should not be compared as equivalent measurements. They do, however, help explain why exercise and outdoor awareness are central use cases for open-ear products.
Bottom-line buying advice
Start with the fit you can wear comfortably for your longest session. Choose a clip-on if around-ear stability and a secure attachment matter most; choose an open-fit or ear-hook model if you prefer less clamping and easy all-day wear; consider bone conduction only when its vibration-based sound suits you. Then compare battery, controls, IP rating, leakage, wind behavior, and bass expectations.
Among the current guide-specific picks, Shokz OpenFit 2+ is TechRadar’s best overall, Nothing Ear (Open) is SoundGuys’ best overall, OpenDots 2 is the most fully specified premium clip-on in the cited WIRED summary, Bose Ultra Open Earbuds stand out for physical buttons, Soundcore AeroClip offers a documented middle-ground specification set, and Huawei FreeClip 2 emphasizes a lightweight clip-on fit with IP57. Those are different strengths, not one universal winner.
