It is an author’s calculation using stated assumptions—not a universal rate or an independently audited invoice.
How the 2.5¢ voice-agent minute adds up
The estimate describes a call flowing through a Telnyx SIP trunk into LiveKit SIP. Silero voice activity detection and LiveKit’s v1-mini turn detector run on CPU; xAI provides streaming speech recognition and text-to-speech; Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite generates responses. Agent workers and Redis session state are self-hosted.

The longer Axionry analysis presents a related subtotal of $0.0199 after self-hosting workers, bringing its own SIP trunk, switching STT and using Flash-Lite, then adds an estimated $0.0051 for workers, state, logs and observability. These are scenario calculations, not separately verified charges.

The author’s point is that reducing how much the agent says may save more in this configuration than switching among the low-cost LLM choices discussed. The size of that effect depends on the model, speech volume and token usage; the comparison is not a general ranking of AI costs.
As the author puts it, “Pick it for latency and quality, not price.” That advice concerns the LLM choice in this particular breakdown: the estimated model charge is a small share of the total, so latency and response quality may matter more to the product decision.

Those reference figures do not establish a like-for-like saving: the included services and usage assumptions must match before the totals can be compared.

- Whether billing includes silence, connection time or only active speech.
- How much the agent speaks and how many input and output tokens it uses.
- Whether telephony, platform, observability, hosting and support are included.
- Latency and voice quality, alongside the engineering and maintenance required.
When a custom stack may make sense
The longer Axionry analysis estimates a break-even point around 20,000 monthly minutes under its assumed fixed infrastructure and engineering-maintenance costs. That is a scenario, not a general threshold. A build-versus-buy decision depends on monthly usage, the specific managed quote, infrastructure commitments and the staff time needed to operate the custom stack.
For a practical comparison, calculate the full loaded cost per connected minute for each option, using the same call direction, geography, speech and token assumptions. Include fixed infrastructure and ongoing engineering effort rather than comparing only API rates. A lower variable rate may not mean a lower total bill at modest volume.

Vendor prices, plan names and billing terms can also change, so verify the current terms for your region and usage before budgeting.
