Before replacing a slow or troublesome SSD, check its firmware and health in the manufacturer’s utility. A firmware update can correct compatibility bugs, improve quality or reliability, and sometimes improve performance for a specific model and workload. It cannot add storage capacity, restore worn NAND, or repair failing hardware, so the software check should precede—not replace—a hardware decision.
Why firmware is the first upgrade to check
Firmware is the operating software embedded in an SSD’s controller. Manufacturers use updates to address performance, compatibility, quality, reliability, diagnostics, and security issues. Samsung describes firmware updates as a way to improve “performance, compatibility, or user environment,” while its FAQ explains that software updates let manufacturers improve hardware performance and quality.

Those are potential, model-specific benefits—not a universal speed increase. No general performance percentage or lifespan extension applies to every SSD. An update may help when the problem is a controller bug, an operating-system compatibility issue, or maintenance configuration. It cannot create additional NAND capacity or reverse flash-memory wear.

When an update is more sensible than a replacement
| What you observe | First action | Likely hardware decision |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility errors, unusual freezes, or a vendor-listed bug | Check the exact model’s firmware release notes and update guidance. | Replace only if the issue remains after maintenance or the vendor no longer supports the drive. |
| Normal health indicators but disappointing everyday performance | Update firmware, then test the same real workload again. | Consider replacement if sustained performance remains inadequate for the workload. |
| Not enough free space | Delete or move data only as a temporary measure. | Buy a larger SSD; firmware cannot increase physical capacity. |
| Failing SMART indicators, read/write errors, or repeated crashes | Back up immediately and plan recovery before attempting maintenance. | Replace the drive; an update is not a repair for worn or failing hardware. |
How to check your SSD and update its firmware safely
- Identify the exact drive. Use your operating system’s storage information or the manufacturer’s utility to record the brand, model, interface, firmware version, capacity, and total usage. Do not apply firmware intended for a different model.
- Install the matching official utility. Samsung Magician supports firmware updates and drive management for supported Samsung models. Western Digital and SanDisk provide Dashboard software for firmware notices, health and SMART tests, and performance monitoring; Western Digital says its legacy Dashboard has ended support and that SanDisk Dashboard is the current SSD product path. Crucial Storage Executive provides firmware updates and SSD management for supported drives. Confirm the utility’s operating-system and model requirements first.
- Record health and release-note information. Check the utility’s health status, SMART results, total bytes written or other usage indicators, and the stated changes in the available firmware. Treat a listed fix as relevant evidence, not a promise that every workload will get faster.
- Back up important data to separate storage. Samsung highly recommends saving all data on the SSD to another storage device before running its firmware utility. Western Digital warns that a firmware update carries a risk of complete data loss. An external SSD is a practical destination when you need a separate, directly accessible copy; verify that the backup opens before proceeding.
- Use stable wall power. Connect a desktop to reliable mains power and a laptop to its charger. Close applications that write heavily to the drive. Do not disconnect the drive, force a restart, or let the computer lose power while the update is running.
- Follow the utility’s restart instructions exactly. Some updates require a reboot. Western Digital documents a full shutdown and restart for SATA firmware updates, so a quick in-session restart may not be sufficient for that procedure.
- Verify the result. Reopen the utility, confirm the new firmware version, rerun health or SMART checks, and repeat the same workload test you used before maintenance. Compare sustained, everyday behavior—not only a peak benchmark.
What each vendor utility can and cannot do
| Vendor | Useful functions | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Firmware updates, health status, secure erase, performance benchmark, optimization, over-provisioning, and security features. | Several functions work only with Samsung SSDs and supported models. |
| Western Digital/SanDisk | Firmware version and update notices, health and SMART tests, and performance monitoring. | The legacy Western Digital Dashboard is no longer supported; use the current SanDisk Dashboard path for applicable SSD products. |
| Crucial | Firmware update support and SSD management through Storage Executive. | Exact model and supported operating system must be confirmed before updating. |
How to decide after maintenance
Replace for health or reliability problems
Failing SMART indicators, escalating errors, disappearing drives, or repeated crashes are replacement and recovery signals. Preserve the data first; do not use a firmware update as an experiment on a drive that may already be failing.

Replace for capacity
If the drive is routinely full, software cannot add NAND chips. A larger physical SSD is the appropriate upgrade, with interface, form factor, operating-system support, and migration planning checked before purchase.
Replace for sustained workload limits
Video editing, large transfers, virtual machines, and other heavy workloads can expose limits that a firmware update does not remove. Measure the behavior that matters to you after maintenance, including sustained performance rather than a short peak score.

Check support status
A manufacturer that still publishes firmware and security updates gives you more reason to try the software route. Western Digital’s 2021 policy describes standard software support for up to eight years after product release; that is a policy limit, not a guarantee that every model receives updates for the full period.

Common mistakes that turn an update into a data-loss event
- Updating without a verified backup.
- Selecting firmware for a similar-looking but different model.
- Running on unstable power or interrupting the flash process.
- Assuming a benchmark improvement is guaranteed.
- Ignoring health warnings because the utility offers an update.
- Using an unsupported or discontinued utility instead of the vendor’s current tool.
Is SSD firmware worth updating?
Yes, when the drive is healthy, the utility offers firmware for the exact model, and the release notes address a problem you have—or maintenance is a sensible precaution. The update costs time and carries data-loss risk, so backup and stable power are mandatory. If the drive is undersized, worn, failing, or still too slow for its sustained workload after the update, spend on replacement hardware instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can updating SSD firmware make it faster?
It can improve performance on some models and workloads, but no universal speed gain is guaranteed. Test the same real workload before and after the update.
How do I check my SSD health?
Open the SSD manufacturer’s supported utility and review its health status, SMART tests, and usage indicators after confirming the exact model.
