But in an early review published October 6, 2026, basic app compatibility and interface behavior still felt unfinished. The article says the first five models went on sale October 4; its observations are an early reviewer’s impressions, not a model-by-model test.
What are Googlebooks?
The October 6, 2026, review by laptop reviewer Antonio G. Di Benedetto describes Googlebooks as Android laptops. It says the first five models reportedly went on sale October 4, 2026. The review is hosted on a pages.dev address while presenting itself as The Verge, so its claims are best read as that reviewer’s reported experience rather than independently confirmed product specifications.

The article does not name all five launch models or compare their hardware, prices, or availability. It therefore offers a first look at the platform idea, not enough evidence to choose among particular Googlebook laptops.
How do Googlebooks work with an Android phone?
In the reviewer’s account, initial setup pairs a Googlebook with an Android phone by scanning a QR code. The reported integration includes access to phone apps and files, synced notifications, app casting, and Continue On, which can temporarily pin a phone app to the laptop taskbar so a task can continue there.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Files and notifications
Direct access to phone files worked well in the reviewer’s use. Notification syncing was less seamless: notifications could open a cast version of an app instead of its desktop version. The setup also created duplicate phone and laptop app entries, and the reviewer could run mobile and desktop versions of an app at the same time.
App casting and Continue On
Casting brings a phone app onto the laptop, but it does not necessarily make that app feel native to a desktop. The reviewer saw pixelated text, interfaces with awkward proportions, and animations or scrolling that felt slightly sluggish. Continue On worked most reliably with Google Docs and Sheets among the apps tried; Maps and Calendar did not sync through it in those tests.

Are Googlebook apps ready for a laptop?
The review says Google Play Store apps carry one of five desktop-use labels. They can help set expectations, but the reviewer’s examples show that a label does not guarantee familiar mouse and keyboard behavior.
| Play Store label | What the review establishes |
|---|---|
| Made for desktop | The reviewer encountered few apps with this label outside core Google apps, citing CapCut Pad and BandLab as examples. |
| Optimized for desktop | The label is reported, but the review does not establish a consistent interaction standard for it. |
| Compatible with desktop | The label is reported, but the review does not establish a consistent interaction standard for it. |
| Better on the website | Slack carried this label. The reviewer recommended its progressive web app for a more desktop-style experience; repeated attempts were needed to get the installation prompt to appear. |
| Built for mobile | The label is reported, but the review does not establish a consistent interaction standard for it. |
In the reviewer’s use, Apple Music did not respond to right-clicks, and Firefox lacked some tab keyboard shortcuts. These are examples from a brief review, not the result of a systematic survey of apps.

What feels unfinished?
Menus and app folders
The reviewer reports that desktop app folders and right-click menus could appear behind open windows and remain there until the desktop was clicked. That kind of window-management issue makes routine navigation feel less polished.
Keyboard modifier remapping
The review says remapping Ctrl, Caps Lock, Alt, and the Google Action key worked with an external keyboard but not the built-in keyboard. The reviewer reports testing three Googlebooks; this does not establish that the same issue affects every device or later software version.

Multiple Google accounts in Chrome
In the reviewed setup, Chrome did not provide separate browsing, bookmark, and settings spaces for multiple Google accounts signed into a Googlebook. The article characterizes this as a familiar Chromebook limitation, which matters if you expect each account to have its own isolated browser environment.

Does the Glowbar add useful information?
The reviewer describes a light bar on the lid called Glowbar. It is usually white during use, changes color during Gemini interactions, briefly shows a rainbow when the laptop closes, and pulses green, yellow, or red to indicate approximate charge when the laptop is plugged in or unplugged. The reviewer found it distinctive but of limited practical use; that is an aesthetic judgment, not a measured benefit.

What should a prospective buyer take from these first impressions?
The concept has a clear appeal if your everyday computing already revolves around an Android phone: files and notifications are close at hand, and some work can move from phone to laptop. The unresolved question is whether your essential apps behave like laptop apps when you use a mouse, keyboard, and windows. These early impressions point to meaningful rough edges, but do not establish how every model performs or whether later updates address them.
The review supports searching for a “Googlebook laptop” as a product category, but it does not confirm current retailer listings or identify all launch models. For a purchase decision, look for model-specific details on hardware, price, support, and availability, and check whether the apps you rely on work well in their desktop or web versions.
