For a base Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, choose the OtterBox Defender if you want a more rugged, substantial case with port covers; choose the Commuter if you prefer a lighter, less bulky case for everyday carry. Neither is waterproof, and the case must match your exact S21 model.
Which OtterBox is better for Galaxy S21?
There is no single winner: Defender prioritizes a rugged enclosure, while Commuter is the more pocket-friendly daily-carry option. OtterBox announced both lines for the Galaxy S21 family on January 14, 2021, including the base Galaxy S21 5G, S21+ 5G, and S21 Ultra 5G. Those are separate phone variants, so confirm the exact model before buying. OtterBox’s S21-family announcement establishes that the cases were announced for these phones; it does not establish current stock.

Is Defender worth the extra bulk?
Choose Defender if a more rugged, layered case is worth carrying a thicker-feeling phone. OtterBox describes the current Defender series as having a solid inner shell, durable outer cover, and port covers; it calls Defender its thickest line. The series page advertises up to 7x military-grade drop protection. That is OtterBox’s current family-level claim, not an independently verified test result for a specific Galaxy S21 case. See OtterBox’s current Defender Series description.
The port covers and more substantial construction may appeal if you want added enclosure around the phone’s ports and a case designed around rougher handling. The available information does not establish exact dimensions or weight for an S21 Defender SKU, so “bulkier” is a relative design tradeoff, not a measured size comparison.

Does Commuter protect enough for everyday use?
Commuter is the more natural choice if you want two layers without Defender’s more substantial design. OtterBox describes the current Commuter series as a soft inner layer paired with a durable outer shell, and positions it as lightweight and pocket-friendly. Its current page advertises 3x military-grade drop protection for the series, not a separately verified result for an S21-specific SKU. See OtterBox’s current Commuter Series description.
That makes Commuter a reasonable everyday-carry choice if you want case protection while keeping the phone easier to pocket. The multiplier figures for Defender and Commuter are manufacturer claims for their current product families, not a head-to-head independent test of the older Galaxy S21 versions. They should not be read as a direct measure of how either exact S21 SKU will perform in a particular drop.
Are either of these Galaxy S21 cases waterproof?
No. OtterBox’s January 2021 S21-family announcement explicitly says the Defender and Commuter cases covered there are not protective against water, although they add protection against drops and shock. Do not treat either case as waterproof or assume it improves the phone’s own water resistance.

How to check that the case fits your Galaxy S21
- Identify the phone model in the phone’s settings or original packaging: Galaxy S21 5G, Galaxy S21+ 5G, or Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.
- Read the exact model listed on the case packaging or product listing. Do not rely on “S21” alone if the listing does not specify the variant.
- Confirm the listing is for the OtterBox Defender or Commuter version made for that exact phone, then check seller and stock details before ordering.
The 2021 announcement confirms historical fit for named S21-family variants, but current availability and exact SKU-specific wireless-charging behavior have not been established. Do not assume a case listed for one S21 variant fits another.
Bottom line: choose by carry preference, not the multiplier
For a base Galaxy S21 5G, Defender is the ruggedness-led choice if you accept a more substantial case; Commuter is the slimmer daily-carry choice. Confirm the precise S21 variant and SKU, and treat OtterBox’s drop multipliers as current series-level claims rather than independent, S21-specific comparisons.
