OSS NA22 Post-Event Report: Attendance, Program and Security Themes

The Linux Foundation’s post-event report for Open Source Summit North America 2022 (OSS NA22) describes a hybrid summit held June 20–24, 2022, in Austin, Texas, with virtual participation. It brought together 14 component events, 2,771 attendees, 1,041 organizations and participants from 68 countries.

What OSS NA22 was

OSS NA22 was an umbrella conference rather than a single-track event. The Linux Foundation grouped 14 events around open-source technologies, projects and community issues, combining an Austin gathering with online attendance.

The overall dates in the Foundation’s post-event report are June 20–24, 2022. A separate security recap discusses activity from June 21–24, so those narrower dates should not replace the summit’s full schedule.

Attendance and representation

Measure Reported figure
Total attendees 2,771
Attendees in Austin 1,286
Organizations represented 1,041
Countries represented 68
Attendees in technical positions 54%
Developers More than one-quarter of attendees

These are figures published by the Linux Foundation in its 2022 event report. Total attendance includes virtual participants; the 1,286 figure is specifically the in-person Austin count. Organizations represented is not a headcount of people, and the country figure is not a measure of equal participation by country.

Where attendees came from

The report prints these rounded regional shares:

Region Share of attendees
North America 77%
Europe 11%
Asia 8%
South America 2%
Oceania 1%
Africa 1%

Because the Foundation presents rounded percentages, the values should be read as an overview rather than a precise reconstruction of the attendee database.

What the program covered

The pre-event schedule announcement said the conference program was set to feature 300 talks. That announced count covered keynotes, conference sessions, tutorials and birds-of-a-feather sessions; it is a program figure, not a post-event count of sessions actually delivered.

Named conference components

  • LinuxCon
  • Embedded Linux Conference
  • CloudOpen
  • SupplyChainSecurityCon
  • OSPOCon
  • Emerging OS Forum
  • ContainerCon

Examples of technical sessions

The schedule announcement highlighted LinuxCon content on “Memory Folios,” a CloudOpen session about a petascale telemetry backend using OpenTelemetry, and an Embedded Linux Conference session on V4L2 M2M as a driver framework for video-processing IP. These examples show the breadth of the umbrella: kernel and systems work, observability at scale, and embedded multimedia infrastructure.

Security was a major thread

The Linux Foundation’s security recap identified several summit components devoted to different parts of open-source security:

  • OpenSSF Day, focused on the Open Source Security Foundation community.
  • Critical Software Summit, addressing security concerns around critical software.
  • SupplyChainSecurityCon, centered on software supply-chain risk.
  • Global Security Vulnerability Summit, focused on vulnerability-related collaboration.

The Foundation characterized this security work as a community effort involving stakeholders, collaboration, tools and training. That description comes from the Foundation’s recap; the available event materials do not provide an independent measurement of the security program’s impact.

How attendees described the experience

The post-event report reproduces this testimonial from Lisa Mae DeMasi, Open Source Content Writer at VMware:

“AS A FIRST-TIME ATTENDEE, THE OSS NA EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. THE KEYNOTES. THE SESSION SPEAKERS. THE QUANTITY OF RICH CONTENT—FROM EVERYTHING OPEN SOURCE TO DEI AND MENTORSHIP. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.”

The comment points to a program that extended beyond engineering sessions to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), mentorship, keynotes and speaker-led learning.

What remains available after the event

The Linux Foundation’s archived OSS NA22 event page links to the post-event report and to 2022 session recordings. Those links establish that recordings were provided through the archive, but the reviewed materials do not confirm that every session was recorded or that all recordings remain accessible today. Availability can therefore depend on the archive’s current state.

How to interpret the report’s numbers

  • 2,771 versus 1,286: the first is total attendance for the hybrid event; the second is the in-person Austin count.
  • 1,041 organizations: this counts represented organizations, not additional attendees.
  • 68 countries versus regional shares: the country count and the rounded regional distribution describe different aspects of participation.
  • 54% technical and more than one-quarter developers: these are job-role shares, not separate attendance totals that can be added together.
  • 300 talks: this was announced before the summit as the planned program size, while the post-event report supplies the attendance results.

Bottom line

OSS NA22 was a large, hybrid Linux Foundation summit organized around 14 connected events. Its post-event report records 2,771 attendees—including 1,286 in person—along with broad organizational and international representation. The program combined deep technical sessions with community topics, while security received dedicated treatment through four named summit components. The archived page points readers to reports and recordings, but current recording access and complete session coverage are not established by the available materials.
