Ortho-K temporarily reshapes the cornea with custom contact lenses worn on a prescribed schedule; LASIK surgically reshapes corneal tissue with a laser. Ortho-K’s effect is reversible and depends on continued lens use. LASIK is not a nightly lens routine, but it involves surgery and has distinct risks. Neither is universally better or suitable for everyone: an eye-care professional must assess your prescription, corneal health, needs, and expectations.
How Ortho-K and LASIK work
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
Ortho-K uses specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses to temporarily change the cornea’s curvature, most commonly to reduce myopia (nearsightedness). The lenses are often worn overnight, then removed on waking. Depending on the patient, vision may stay corrected for all or most of the day; duration varies. If lens wear stops, the cornea and refractive error move back toward their original state. The FDA requires eye-care professionals to be trained and certified before fitting overnight Ortho-K lenses in their practice. FDA guidance on orthokeratology

LASIK
LASIK is refractive surgery in which an ophthalmologist uses a laser to reshape the cornea, changing how light focuses on the retina. Depending on the laser platform’s indications, it can treat myopia, hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Its goal is to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses, not to guarantee perfect unaided vision. American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) LASIK guidance
What matters most in the comparison
| Factor | Ortho-K | LASIK |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | Corneal shape changes temporarily with prescribed contact-lens wear. | Corneal tissue is surgically reshaped with a laser. |
| Ongoing routine | Requires lens handling and care, professional fitting and monitoring, and continued scheduled wear to maintain the effect. | Requires a preoperative evaluation, surgery, and aftercare; glasses or an enhancement may still be relevant. |
| Typical refractive focus | Commonly used to reduce myopia; limits depend on the specific lens and patient. | May treat myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism within the particular laser platform’s indications. |
| Risk profile | Overnight contact-lens risks include infection and corneal complications. | Surgical and visual side effects can include dry eye, glare, halos, and other vision symptoms. |
These are different kinds of treatment, not interchangeable options with a single risk score. Official guidance describes their respective risks but does not establish that one is categorically safer or better for every patient. Compare them with an eye-care professional in light of your eyes and priorities. AAO guidance on orthokeratology · FDA information on LASIK risks

Who may be a candidate?
Ortho-K candidacy
Ortho-K requires a clinician to select and fit a lens, confirm that its indication suits the prescription and cornea, and monitor eye health and lens performance. Limits vary by product. For example, the FDA patient booklet for Optimum Infinite Ortho-K Lenses II describes temporary reduction of myopia up to 6.00 diopters with up to 1.75 diopters of astigmatism. Those are limits for that specific product, not a universal range or a guarantee of an individual result. FDA patient booklet for Optimum Infinite Ortho-K Lenses II
LASIK candidacy
AAO patient guidance identifies age, a stable prescription, a treatable refractive error, healthy and sufficiently thick corneas, overall eye health, and realistic expectations as considerations. Potential reasons someone may not qualify include an unstable prescription, severe dry eye, thin or diseased corneas, keratoconus, advanced glaucoma, a vision-affecting cataract, or poorly controlled diabetes. These are screening considerations, not a personal determination; the ophthalmologist also considers the proposed laser’s labeling. AAO LASIK guidance

If you have worn Ortho-K and are considering LASIK
Ortho-K temporarily changes corneal shape, which can affect surgical measurements. AAO EyeWiki’s preoperative evaluation reference says Ortho-K may need to be stopped for several months and measurements documented as stable before LASIK planning. The treating ophthalmologist decides the appropriate interval and confirms stability; do not use a generic waiting period to plan surgery yourself. AAO EyeWiki: LASIK evaluation

What LASIK outcome figures mean
AAO’s 2026 patient guidance says about 9 out of 10 people (90 percent) who have LASIK end up with vision between 20/20 and 20/40 without glasses or contact lenses. This is a general figure, not a direct comparison with Ortho-K or a promise of an individual result. AAO LASIK guidance

- For better hard contact lens removal. The silicone suction cups make it easier to remove hard contact lenses without having to touch them with your fingers
- Each silicone succer is individually packed in a storage cylinder with a screw cap. For easy hardlens removal, moisten the tip of the succer & eye with your wetting solution
- Economy pack with 4 pieces, contains 1 contact lens sucker each in the colours: yellow, blue, pink and transparent. Always have a spare on hand, also ideal for travel
- Removing hard lenses with your fingertip is difficult and can lead to the lens breaking. JB White Silicone succers are easy to use and facilitate the removal
- Scope of delivery, 4x JB White contact lens suction cups with storage container. For dimensionally stable hard monthly, six-monthly and annual lenses -NOT for soft lenses-
Ortho-K risks
Overnight Ortho-K shares the infection concerns of other overnight contact-lens wear. AAO notes an increased risk of microbial keratitis, a serious corneal infection. FDA product labeling warns that corneal ulcers and vision loss can occur and that serious-problem risks are greater with overnight wear. The reviewed guidance does not establish a patient-specific risk rate. Correct fitting, careful lens hygiene, following the prescribed schedule, and professional monitoring are important. LASIK risks
Possible LASIK effects include dry eye and fluctuating vision, which can persist beyond the usual recovery period, as well as glare, halos, starbursts, double vision, reduced vision in low light, under- or over-correction, and infection. Rarely, best-corrected vision can be lost or blindness can occur. FDA also warns that some patients experience vision loss or debilitating visual symptoms. Discuss how these possibilities relate to your eyes, work, and tolerance for risk with the surgeon. AAO LASIK guidance · FDA LASIK risks and complications
