The original Orkut is not available. Google shut it down on September 30, 2014. For a current replacement, choose based on what you actually miss: Reddit is better suited to topic-based, mostly public discussion, while Discord is better suited to persistent group conversation and spaces shared with friends. Neither service recreates Orkut’s old profiles, scraps, testimonials or account system, and neither is proven to find a particular former Orkut contact automatically.
Google says public Orkut community discussions remain viewable in the Community Archive, but profile-associated items can no longer be saved. The original Google Takeout export period ended in September 2016. Any proposed return of Orkut is still unconfirmed: the current Orkut.com campaign asks people to support a possible network, but signing up does not reserve an account, username or place in line.

What happened to Orkut?
Google announced that it would shut down Orkut on September 30, 2014, and its Help Center continues to identify that date as the service’s closure. The shutdown means the old Orkut service, its account system and its normal profile experience are not available to sign into today.
There is a limited distinction between community material and profile material:

- Public community discussions: Google’s Help Center says these remain viewable in the Community Archive.
- Profile-associated items: Google says they can no longer be saved.
- Exports: Google’s original Takeout availability ended in September 2016, so a new export window should not be assumed.
The archive is therefore not a restored social network. It does not bring back active profiles, private conversations, friend lists or the ability to resume posting in the old service. Treat any surviving public material as historical reference rather than as a working Orkut account.
Which Orkut alternative fits your goal?
There is no single, documented one-for-one Orkut replacement. The useful choice depends on whether you want public topic communities, an ongoing group chat, or a way to contact people you already know.

The practical comparison is about four things: how quickly conversation moves, how newcomers discover a group, whether membership is open or approved, and whether your purpose is meeting people around an interest or reaching already-known friends. The available sources document different mechanics; they do not establish a controlled ranking of user experience.

How Reddit’s community access works
Reddit’s documented community types give moderators several ways to control participation:
- Public: Reddit account holders can view, comment and post in the community.
- Restricted: The community can limit posting or commenting, allowing moderators to control who contributes while retaining a different level of visibility.
- Private: Viewing and participation require moderator approval.
This makes Reddit a reasonable choice when your priority is a topic community with readable, threaded discussions and a clear distinction between open participation and approved membership. A public community can make it easier for someone interested in the subject to find existing conversations, while restricted and private settings are useful when a group wants tighter control.

When Reddit feels closest to the community part of Orkut
Choose Reddit when the subject itself is the center of the group: a hobby, local interest, language, profession, fandom or another recurring topic. A community’s posts remain organized as discussions rather than requiring everyone to be present at the same moment. That structure is useful when you want to read earlier answers, add a considered reply or return to a thread later.
Reddit is less suitable if your main objective is to rebuild a personal friend network. The documented access model describes community visibility and approval; it does not promise personal profiles that match old Orkut identities, a scrapbook equivalent or automatic contact migration.

- Start with the purpose. If the group is intended for broad topic discussion, a public community is the most open model supported by the documentation.
- Decide who may contribute. If everyone should be able to read but only approved participants should post or comment, look for a restricted arrangement.
- Use approval for genuinely closed groups. A private community requires moderator approval for viewing and participation, so establish who will handle requests before inviting people.
- Explain the rule before inviting friends. Tell prospective members whether they can browse immediately, need approval to contribute or need approval even to view the community.
These are community-level choices, not guarantees about the behavior or moderation quality of a particular group. Check the current settings of the community you intend to join before sharing personal information.
Discord as an Orkut alternative for friends and ongoing conversation
Friend servers and Community Servers are different purposes
Discord documents both servers created for friends and Community Servers intended for broader communities. In a friend server, the practical goal is usually a persistent shared space for people who already know one another. A Community Server is oriented toward a wider membership and can be listed through Discord’s server discovery systems when it meets the relevant conditions.
This makes Discord a stronger fit when “reconnecting with friends” means creating a place where the same people can continue talking, rather than publishing a sequence of topic posts for anyone to browse. It can also work for an interest group that wants ongoing conversation, provided the group understands how members will find it and how access will be controlled.

Why a Discord server may not appear in discovery
Discord’s support documentation makes an important distinction: being a Community Server does not automatically make a server discoverable. Discord also describes the Discover Tab as experimental and available only to a percentage of users. A server may therefore exist and function normally without appearing in every user’s discovery experience.

Discord’s official server directory lists discoverable servers, but directory presence should not be treated as universal reach. If you are trying to reunite a known group, direct invitations are more dependable than expecting former friends to find the server through a directory or experimental tab.
How to use Discord for a reunion group
- Contact people first. Use an email address, phone number or other contact method that each person has already shared with you. Do not assume Discord can identify former Orkut contacts.
- Explain the server’s purpose. Say whether it is a small friends-only space or a broader community organized around a shared interest.
- Decide how people will join. For a known group, send invitations directly. For a broader community, review Discord’s current requirements and discovery settings rather than assuming Community status is enough.
- Set expectations about conversation. Discord is oriented toward ongoing group conversation, so tell members where to ask questions, post updates and continue discussions.
- Review privacy and moderation settings. Platform controls change, and the appropriate settings depend on whether the server is for close friends or an open interest group.
This approach uses Discord for what its documented server types support without promising that it will recover old Orkut relationships or make a group publicly searchable.
Reconnecting with former Orkut friends
What the available services cannot establish
Reddit’s and Discord’s platform documentation does not establish that Reddit or Discord can locate a particular former Orkut contact, import an Orkut friend list or match an old profile to a new account. Do not promise people-search, automatic migration or recovery of private Orkut messages.
Public archive material also should not be treated as a directory of current identities. A name or message visible in an archived community does not prove that the person still uses that name, wants to be contacted or has an account on another platform.

A safer, more realistic reconnection plan
- Start with consent-based contact details. Write to addresses or accounts the person has previously given you, or ask a mutual friend to pass along your message.
- State who you are and why you are writing. Mention the shared Orkut community or memory without publishing private details in a public forum.
- Offer one current channel. Invite the person to a Reddit community or Discord server only after explaining what the space is and who can see it.
- Respect non-response. An inactive address, changed username or unanswered message is not evidence that a person wants further contact.
- Avoid posting sensitive information publicly. Do not publish old email addresses, phone numbers, private messages or identifying details in an open community to find someone.
This method is slower than an imagined account migration, but it matches what the documented services actually provide: places to communicate, not a verified map from Orkut identities to current accounts.

Orkut.com currently promotes a support campaign for a proposed network. Its page says that signing does not reserve an account, username or place in line. The founder’s message includes the line, “In a feed you’re an audience, in a community you’re a member,” presented as a vision for the proposed network.
That campaign should not be described as a live social network, a restored Orkut service or a confirmed launch. TechCrunch reported on October 9, 2026 that it was unclear whether a new platform was in development or would launch. Until the operator publishes a functioning service and clear account terms, treat the project as unconfirmed.
Keep the dates separate: the original Orkut shut down on September 30, 2014, while the current campaign concerns a possible future project. A support form does not reopen historical accounts, restore old data or guarantee access to a future username.
Choosing between Reddit and Discord
Choose Reddit when the topic should outlast the conversation
- You want public, searchable-style community discussion rather than a private reunion room.
- You expect people to read previous posts and add replies at different times.
- You need a documented choice between public, restricted and moderator-approved private participation.
- Your main goal is meeting others around an interest, not rebuilding a specific friend list.
Choose Discord when the people and continuity matter most
- You already know the participants or can invite them directly.
- You want a persistent group space for ongoing conversation.
- You are willing to manage invitations and explain whether the server is for friends or a broader community.
- You understand that Community Server status does not automatically provide discovery and that the Discover Tab is experimental for some users.
Use both only when their roles are clear
A group can use a public Reddit community for broad topic discussion and a Discord server for continuing conversation among invited members, but that creates two membership lists and two moderation environments. Use this combination only if someone is responsible for explaining the relationship between the spaces and removing outdated invitations. Do not imply that one service synchronizes accounts or imports Orkut data into the other.
Privacy and continuity checks before joining
Features and settings change, so verify the current controls on the service and community you are considering. Before posting or inviting former friends, check:
- Who can view posts, messages or the member list?
- Who can post, comment or join without approval?
- Who approves private-community or server requests?
- How will newcomers discover the group if directory or discovery features are limited?
- What information about former friends is safe to share publicly?
- Who will moderate the group if the original organizer becomes inactive?
For an old Orkut community, preserve only material you are entitled to retain and can access through Google’s current archive guidance. The archive’s existence does not establish that profile-associated content can still be saved, and the historical Takeout period ended in September 2016.
Bottom line: the practical Orkut alternatives
For communities, start with Reddit when you want topic-centered discussion and a documented public, restricted or private access model. For reconnecting with friends, start with direct invitations to a Discord friend server or another channel those people already use; Discord’s ongoing group spaces fit that purpose better than relying on public discovery. Neither platform is a complete Orkut replacement, and neither is documented as a way to recover former Orkut accounts or locate every old contact.
The original service remains closed, and the Orkut.com campaign is only a proposed future project whose launch is unconfirmed. Choose a current platform for the relationship or community you want to build now, not on the assumption that old profiles, messages or usernames will return.
