Orionid Meteor Shower 2026: How to See Halley’s Comet’s Meteors

The Orionid meteor shower is active from October 2 to November 7, 2026, and is expected to peak overnight October 21–22. For the best chance of seeing meteors, choose a dark, clear location and watch before dawn after the Moon sets. The bright waxing gibbous Moon will hide some fainter meteors, so check your local moonset and weather before heading out.

When does the Orionid meteor shower peak in 2026?

NASA lists the Orionids as active October 2 through November 7, with the peak on the night of October 21 into the morning of October 22. Peak dates describe the shower’s expected activity, not a guarantee of clear skies or a fixed number of meteors at every location. NASA’s Orionids guide and October 2026 skywatching guide identify the dates.

What can you expect to see?

NASA says the Orionids typically produce about 10–20 meteors per hour under dark skies. In its October 5, 2026 guidance, NASA estimates about 3–6 per hour in suburban areas with ambient light. These are estimates, not hourly guarantees: clouds, nearby lighting, moonlight, and how much sky you can see all affect your actual view.

The Orionids are debris from 1P/Halley, better known as Halley’s Comet. As Earth passes through that debris stream, particles enter the atmosphere at about 41 miles (66 kilometers) per second, according to NASA’s Orionids reference. Exceptional years from 2006 to 2009 saw 50–75 meteors per hour, according to the American Meteor Society’s 2026/2027 calendar; that historical rate is not a forecast for 2026.

How does the Moon affect the 2026 peak?

The Moon is a major constraint this year. The American Meteor Society lists it as a waxing gibbous at 74% illumination on the October 21–22 peak. NASA warns that moonlight will wash out some fainter meteors. A useful viewing window may come after moonset and before dawn, when the Moon is no longer brightening the sky. Moonset depends on your location, so check the local time rather than relying on a universal hour.

How to see the Orionids

  1. Check the forecast and local moonset. Pick a clear period before dawn after the Moon has set, if that timing works for your location.
  2. Find a dark, safely accessible spot. Get away from bright ambient lights when practical, and choose somewhere you can observe comfortably and safely.
  3. Give your eyes time to adjust. Once outside, avoid bright lights and allow your vision to adapt to the dark.
  4. Look broadly across the sky. The Orionid radiant—the apparent point from which the meteors seem to emerge—is just north of Betelgeuse in Orion. You do not need to stare at it: meteors can appear across other parts of the sky.
  5. Keep watching patiently. Meteor activity is variable, and there may be quiet stretches between sightings.

You do not need a telescope or binoculars. Meteors move across a wide area of sky, so broad naked-eye viewing is more practical than looking through a narrow field of view. NASA’s observing guidance likewise recommends a dark location, time for your eyes to adjust, and looking up.

Should you photograph the Orionids?

A camera is optional; it is not needed to watch the shower. If you want to photograph it, a tripod can keep the camera steady during long exposures. NASA’s viewing advice is aimed at watching the sky, while Space.com’s October 2026 observing article provides separate skywatching and photography guidance.
