The Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 Classic is a compact, manually aimed 4.5-inch Newtonian reflector designed for straightforward visual observing. Orion’s manual lists a 900 mm focal length, a simple Dobsonian mount and two included eyepieces. TelescopicWatch reviewer Zane Landers regarded it as a good first telescope when it was available, while noting its modest aperture and price relative to competitors. Today, Adorama’s exact-model listing says the item is no longer available, so buyers should treat it as a used-market search rather than assume new stock exists.

What kind of telescope is the XT4.5?

The XT4.5 (model 10014) is a Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian base. Its 114 mm (4.5-inch) aperture gathers light through a primary mirror, while the 900 mm focal length and f/7.9 focal ratio describe its optical configuration. Orion’s manual specifies aluminum mirrors overcoated with SiO2 and a 1.25-inch rack-and-pinion focuser. Orion’s instruction manual is the primary source for these specifications; a catalog independently corroborates the core optical details. Catalog specifications.

The mount moves in altitude and azimuth, so the observer points the tube by hand rather than using a motorized tracking system. That keeps operation direct, but it also means the telescope does not automatically follow a target as Earth rotates.

What comes with it, and what do the numbers mean?

For the package documented in Orion’s model 10014 manual revision IN 164 Rev C (06/12), the included accessories are a 25 mm Sirius Plössl eyepiece, a 10 mm Sirius Plössl eyepiece, a 6×26 correct-image finder and its bracket, an eyepiece rack, and a collimation cap. The manual also lists the Dobsonian base components. Accessories on a used listing may differ, so confirm what is actually included.

Specification or included item What Orion’s manual states
Aperture 114 mm (4.5 inches)
Focal length and ratio 900 mm; f/7.9
Focuser 1.25-inch rack-and-pinion
Tube and base weight 17.6 lb
Tube length and outer diameter 35 inches long; 5.5 inches in diameter
Magnification with included 25 mm eyepiece 36x, calculated from the 900 mm focal length
Magnification with included 10 mm eyepiece 91x, calculated from the 900 mm focal length

All figures in the table come from Orion’s model 10014 instruction manual. Magnification depends on the eyepiece used: divide the telescope’s 900 mm focal length by the eyepiece’s focal length. The telescope accepts 1.25-inch eyepieces, so compatible eyepieces are an optional way to vary magnification; the included pair already provides two starting points.

How does it work for a first telescope?

The XT4.5’s appeal is its relatively uncomplicated setup and manual operation. The manual covers assembling the base, aligning the finder, focusing and changing eyepieces. A correct-image finder helps locate objects while keeping their orientation intuitive. The Dobsonian mount offers a direct point-and-look experience without requiring an electronic system.

Telescope Cover for Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 Classic Dobsonian 2001–2022
  • 420D OXFORD FABRIC: Made from durable 420D Oxford fabric with a water-resistant outer surface, this telescope cover helps reduce direct exposure to light rain, dust, leaves and everyday outdoor debris. The flexible material is designed for repeated covering and removal while keeping compatible telescopes cleaner during storage
  • SILVER-COATED INNER LAYER: The inside features a silver-colored coating that adds another layer between the telescope and the outer fabric. It helps reflect sunlight and reduce heat buildup during outdoor storage, making the cover practical for patios, backyards, observation areas and other suitable spaces
  • ZIPPERED ACCESS FOR EASY HANDLING: A zipper opening makes the cover easier to place over and remove from compatible telescope setups without excessive pulling or stretching. The lightweight construction allows quick daily use while helping the fabric follow the shape of the optical tube and mount more naturally
  • ADJUSTABLE DRAWSTRING FOR A SECURE FIT: The lower edge includes an elastic drawstring with an adjustable stopper that can be tightened around the setup after the cover is positioned. This helps reduce loose fabric and keeps the cover more neatly in place during storage when outdoor air movement increases
  • ALL-WEATHER STORAGE COVERAGE: Designed for regular outdoor storage, the cover helps limit contact with sun exposure, moisture, dust, fallen leaves and common debris throughout changing seasons. When the telescope is ready for use, the flexible cover can be removed, folded and stored in a compact space

In his TelescopicWatch review, Zane Landers described the XT4.5 as a good first telescope when it was available, but considered its aperture relatively small and its price high compared with competitors. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled side-by-side test. A 4.5-inch aperture is a practical limit on how much light the instrument collects; what a viewer can see also depends on the target, observing conditions and location. No particular view is guaranteed by the product specifications alone.

The manual does not include a powered tracking system. At higher magnifications, a manually aimed telescope requires more frequent nudging to keep an object centered. Its tube-and-base weight is listed as 17.6 lb, and the tube is 35 inches long, useful details to consider when planning storage and transport.

FUSNCNZ Outdoor Telescope Cover for Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 Classic, 420D Oxford Fabric Cover with Adjustable Drawstring for Telescope and Tripod, Garage, Patio and Storage
  • 【FULL EQUIPMENT STORAGE COVERAGE】: Outdoor Telescope Cover for Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 Classic, extends over the optical tube, mount, and upper tripod area to add a practical outer layer between viewing sessions. The roomy shape helps reduce direct contact with light rain, leaves, dirt, and common debris while equipment is stored
  • 【ADJUSTABLE DRAWSTRING CLOSURE】: Lower cords allow the opening to be tightened around compatible setups after placement. This adjustable design helps manage excess fabric near the base and makes it easier to position the material around different tripod layouts without adding a rigid fastening system
  • 【 EXTENDED SIZE】: Measuring about 59 in long with a top width near 31.5 in and lower width near 33 in, the tapered profile provides room for larger optical assemblies and mounted accessories. Check overall height and maximum width before ordering to determine suitability
  • 【EASY ON, EASY OFF DESIGN】: The open-bottom construction slips over assembled equipment without requiring the optical tube and mount to be separated first. Flexible fabric makes removal straightforward when it is time to observe and folds down afterward for convenient storage with other accessories
  • 【GARAGE, PATIO & BETWEEN-SESSION USE】: Suitable for temporary storage in garages, covered patios, porches, sheds, and home observing areas. Before purchase, compare the dimensions with your tube position, mount width, tripod height, and attached accessories to determine whether the shape suits your setup

Does it need collimation?

Like other Newtonian reflectors, the XT4.5 may need its mirrors aligned, a process called collimation. Orion says the optics are factory aligned but may need adjustment after rough handling. The manual includes a collimation cap and marks the primary mirror’s center to help with alignment; it does not say that collimation is required before every observing session. Owners should follow the model manual’s instructions rather than adjust the optics unnecessarily.

Is the XT4.5 still available?

Adorama’s exact-model product page stated “This item is no longer available” when accessed on October 7, 2026. That is the status of one retailer’s listing, not proof that no used or marketplace examples exist. Adorama’s XT4.5 listing. The available evidence does not establish a current new price or stock status elsewhere.

What to check on a used example

  • Mirror: Look for visible damage or contamination, and ask whether the optics have been cleaned. Use the manual’s care guidance rather than attempting an unfamiliar cleaning procedure.
  • Focuser: Check that it moves smoothly and holds an eyepiece securely.
  • Finder: Confirm it is present, attaches correctly and can be aligned.
  • Base: Test that the telescope moves smoothly in both altitude and azimuth without binding or excessive looseness.
  • Completeness: Compare the included parts and accessories with the manual, while recognizing that a resale package may not match the original configuration.

Care and solar safety

Orion’s manual advises keeping dust caps in place and storing the telescope and small accessories in a clean, dry place. It provides separate appendices for collimation and optic cleaning; consult those instructions before working on the mirrors.

Orion’s manual warns: “Never look directly at the Sun through your telescope or its finder scope—even for an instant—without a professionally made solar filter that completely covers the front of the instrument, or permanent eye damage could result.” The filter must cover the front of the entire instrument; never point the telescope or finder at the Sun without that protection.

Who should consider it?

The XT4.5 may suit someone seeking a simple, manually operated reflector and who can find a complete example in sound condition at a price that makes sense. Its documented specifications and included eyepieces make it possible to evaluate a listing without relying on vague magnification claims. Buyers who prioritize more aperture, automatic tracking, or a readily available new product should weigh those needs against the limits of this older model. The available review supports a qualified first-telescope recommendation from its author, not a claim that it is the best choice for every beginner.
