What the original Oblivion offers
The original is the 2006 release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, presented by its publisher as a freeform role-playing game with first-person combat, Radiant AI and the PC Construction Set. Its launch material advertised more than 200 hours of gameplay, a claim made by 2K Games and Bethesda Softworks for the 2006 release rather than a modern completion-time measurement.
#1 Best Overall
- Live another life in another world, create and play any character you can imagine
- An all-new combat and magic system brings first person role-playing to a new level of intensity
- Groundbreaking AI system gives characters full 24/7 schedules
- New lands to explore in the Shivering Isles expansion
- Challenging new foes, hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibeous Grummites and more
The original design has a distinct identity
Playing the 2006 edition means experiencing its original visual language, character models, animation, interface and system presentation. Those elements are not merely old graphics wrapped around the same game: they shape how the world reads, how menus feel and how combat communicates timing and impact.
The original also preserves the historical version of the leveling and progression systems. If you learned the game through older guides, character-planning discussions or classic mod lists, those references generally make the most sense with the 2006 ruleset rather than with Remastered’s redesign.
Why the Construction Set matters
On PC, the Construction Set is the decisive feature for many long-term players. It gives the original edition a formal authoring tool alongside its established mod ecosystem. That makes the 2006 version attractive when your goal is to edit quests, create new locations, alter records or build a heavily customized load order using years of community knowledge.

Bethesda has not published an equivalent Remastered Construction Set or guaranteed compatibility with original plug-ins. Treat the two PC ecosystems as separate projects: do not assume an old plug-in, guide or tool will work unchanged in the remaster.
What Oblivion Remastered changes
Bethesda describes Remastered as a modernization of the 2006 game, not a new story. The remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 for enhanced visuals, rebuilds character models, updates locomotion and combat, adds sprinting, modernizes third-person play, redesigns leveling, updates the user interface and user experience, and records new dialogue so the races have distinct voices.
Visual overhaul
Unreal Engine 5 provides the remaster’s rendering foundation. Character models are rebuilt rather than simply displayed at a higher resolution, so faces, bodies, clothing and animation presentation are part of the new visual target. The practical result is a version aimed at players who want Cyrodiil to look contemporary on current hardware.
The visual upgrade is also the main reason to expect a higher hardware burden than the 2006 edition. Bethesda has not published a controlled performance benchmark, frame-rate test or universal PC specification table for this comparison. Do not treat screenshots or a console listing as proof of a particular PC frame rate.

Remastered changes how the character moves and how attacks are presented. Sprinting is added, locomotion is rebuilt and combat is refined. Third-person play is modernized rather than left as a direct copy of the older implementation.
These changes matter if you regularly play outside first person, want faster traversal or find the original’s movement and attack feedback dated. They also mean that muscle memory from the 2006 version is not a perfect guide to Remastered. A build or tactic that felt comfortable in the original may need adjustment because movement, timing and camera presentation have changed.
Leveling and interface redesign
Remastered redesigns leveling and updates the UI and UX. The game therefore communicates progression differently from the original. New players benefit from a system designed for a current release, while returning players should expect familiar terms and quests to sit inside a different progression and menu experience.
If you are following an old build guide, check which edition it describes before copying its advice. The guide may assume the original leveling rules, interface labels or interaction flow.
Newly recorded race dialogue
Remastered records new dialogue so races have distinct voices. This is a presentation change with a noticeable effect on character creation and conversations: the same setting is delivered through a more differentiated vocal treatment than in the 2006 edition.

Content: what is included in Remastered?
The Standard Edition is unusually complete. Bethesda’s listed contents are the digital base game, Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, Fighter’s Stronghold, Spell Tomes, Vile Lair, Mehrune’s Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, The Orrery and Horse Pack Armor.
| Package | Included content | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Remastered Standard Edition | Base game; Shivering Isles; Knights of the Nine; Fighter’s Stronghold; Spell Tomes; Vile Lair; Mehrune’s Razor; The Thieves Den; Wizard’s Tower; The Orrery; Horse Pack Armor | The main adventure, two major expansions and the listed smaller DLC are bundled in one edition. |
| Remastered Deluxe Edition | Everything listed for Standard, plus Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon armor, weapon and horse-armor quests, a digital artbook and soundtrack app | An additive package for players who want the extra quests and digital extras. |
| Original 2006 edition | Exact bundle depends on the edition you own | Verify whether your original copy includes the expansions and DLC you intend to play instead of assuming every release has the same contents. |
Shivering Isles remains a substantial expansion
Shivering Isles was announced as more than 30 hours of new gameplay by 2K and Bethesda Softworks in 2007. That figure is the publisher’s description of the expansion, not a guaranteed time for every player. Its inclusion in Remastered Standard makes the remaster more than a visual upgrade to the base campaign: it is also a convenient way to receive the largest expansion alongside the main game.
The same 2007 release reported more than three million units sold in territories where 2K had distribution rights. That historical sales figure describes the original expansion’s commercial reach; it does not measure current player numbers or establish that one edition is technically superior.

Platforms and the buying decision
Bethesda lists Remastered for Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PlayStation 5 and PC. Its current official game page also lists Nintendo Switch 2 and references 2026 patches. Bethesda separately carries an update titled “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Physical Edition Now Available,” dated October 13.
| Platform or access route | Remastered availability stated by Bethesda | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Listed | Remastered is the straightforward current-console option. |
| Game Pass | Listed | Subscribers can use the listed service route instead of choosing between the two editions solely on purchase price. |
| PlayStation 5 | Listed | Remastered is the current-platform choice. |
| PC | Listed | Choose between modern presentation and legacy Construction Set/mod priorities. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Listed on Bethesda’s current game page | Remastered extends the game to that current Nintendo platform. |
No current official price is published, so the sensible buying test is not a guessed dollar amount. Check the store page for your region, compare the edition’s included content, and factor in whether you already own a working original copy.
If you already own the original
Remastered is worth considering when you want the rebuilt visuals, sprinting, modernized third-person play, revised combat, redesigned leveling or current-console access. It is less compelling as a purchase if your main reason for returning is to preserve an exact 2006 experience or to continue a large Construction Set project.
Rank #4
- Includes Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions
Owning the original does not automatically make Remastered redundant. The remaster changes the way the game is presented and played, and it consolidates the listed expansions and DLC in its Standard Edition. Conversely, buying Remastered does not make the original unnecessary for a PC mod library that depends on the old toolchain.
PC mods and tools: the most important split
Choose the original for a legacy workflow
- You want the PC Construction Set named in the 2006 release materials.
- Your project uses established original plug-ins, guides or load-order practices.
- You want to preserve the original systems and presentation while modding.
- You are comfortable maintaining an older PC installation and resolving conflicts within that ecosystem.
This is not a recommendation that every original mod works perfectly forever. It is a recognition that the 2006 edition has the mature legacy workflow described in the 2006 release materials.
Choose Remastered for a clean modern baseline
- You value the new renderer, character models, movement and interface more than compatibility with old tools.
- You are starting a new, lightly modded or unmodded playthrough.
- You want to play on a platform where Remastered is the listed current release.
Before installing any Remastered mod, confirm that it targets Remastered rather than the 2006 edition. Keep separate mod folders and profiles for the two versions; mixing files is a reliable way to create confusing launch failures or broken saves.
Hardware and performance expectations
The original edition was designed for the hardware era of its 2006 release. Remastered’s Unreal Engine 5 foundation and rebuilt assets target a much newer visual standard. That makes hardware a meaningful part of the PC decision, but Bethesda has not published a controlled benchmark, tested presets or a universal recommended specification.
How to make a responsible PC choice
- Check the Remastered store listing for the exact minimum and recommended requirements for your operating system.
- Compare those requirements with your CPU, GPU, system memory and available storage, rather than relying on the age of your original installation.
- Plan to test the game at the store’s recommended target resolution and quality preset before adding mods.
- If your computer is close to the minimum, begin unmodded and lower visual settings before troubleshooting add-ons.
- Keep the original installed as a fallback if you already own it and need a lower-demand way to revisit the story.
Do not infer a guaranteed frame rate from the fact that Remastered runs on a console listed by Bethesda, and do not infer that the original will match modern display or controller behavior without configuration.
Gameplay differences that affect a first run
Exploration and traversal
Sprinting changes the rhythm of crossing Cyrodiil. It can make long trips feel less deliberate and gives players a modern movement option that the original does not provide in the same form. If you enjoy the slower pace and older movement cadence, the original may feel more coherent; if you regard travel speed as friction, Remastered is the better fit.
Best Value
Combat perspective
Both versions retain the same broad role-playing foundation, but Remastered’s rebuilt combat and locomotion change the feedback around attacks and movement. Returning players should approach the opening hours as a re-tuned control experience rather than expecting a graphical skin over identical handling.
Progression planning
The leveling redesign means that advice written for the original should not be treated as edition-neutral. Decide whether you want to learn Remastered’s progression on its own terms or deliberately reproduce the older ruleset; the original is the only direct route to the 2006 leveling experience.
Which version should different players choose?
New to The Elder Scrolls IV
Choose Remastered Standard Edition. You receive the original campaign, Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine and the listed smaller DLC without first sorting out an old edition’s content. The modern visuals, sprinting, updated third-person play, revised combat, redesigned leveling and updated interface reduce the amount of historical friction a first-time player must learn.
A current-console player
Choose Remastered because Bethesda’s current platform list centers it on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with Game Pass also listed. Bethesda’s current platform listings do not identify the 2006 edition as the natural current-console purchase.
A PC player who wants extensive mods
Choose the original if the Construction Set and mature legacy-mod workflow are central to your plan. Choose Remastered only after confirming that the specific tools and mods you need support it; do not assume a successful original load order can be copied across.
A returning fan who wants nostalgia
Choose the original for an authentic 2006 presentation. Choose Remastered if you want to remember the quests and world while replacing the older visual, movement, combat and interface experience with the modernized versions.
A returning fan who wants the easiest complete package
Choose Remastered Standard Edition, then add Deluxe only if its extra armor and weapon quests, digital artbook and soundtrack app matter to you. The Standard package already contains the campaign, the two named major expansions and the listed DLC.

A practical setup plan for either edition
Starting Remastered
- Confirm that your platform is one of Bethesda’s listed targets: Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PlayStation 5, PC or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Choose Standard or Deluxe based on the additional quests and digital extras, not on the base campaign, which is included in both.
- On PC, verify the store’s current hardware requirements and update the game before adding modifications.
- Begin with the default controls and interface so you can identify which behavior comes from the remaster before changing it.
- Use current Remastered-specific mod documentation only after confirming version compatibility.
Starting the original
- Verify which edition you own and whether it contains the expansions and DLC you want.
- Install the original PC toolchain only if you intend to use the Construction Set or legacy modifications.
- Read each mod’s edition and version requirements before installing it.
- Keep backups of saves and maintain a known-good load order before adding large changes.
- Expect the original interface, movement and leveling systems rather than trying to reproduce Remastered’s behavior through random tweaks.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming “remastered” means identical mechanics: Remastered redesigns leveling and changes locomotion, combat, third-person play, UI and dialogue. Treat it as a modernized edition.
- Assuming every DLC item is included in every original copy: Remastered Standard has a defined bundle; check the exact contents of your original edition.
- Copying old PC mods into Remastered: The established original workflow does not prove compatibility with the remaster.
- Buying based on an unverified price or frame-rate claim: No current official price or controlled performance benchmark is published. Use the store listing and your hardware’s published requirements.
- Using an old guide without checking the edition: Leveling, interface labels and movement assumptions may belong to the 2006 game.
- Expecting nostalgia and modernization at the same time: The original preserves the 2006 identity; Remastered deliberately changes presentation and handling. Decide which objective matters more.
Final recommendation
Play Oblivion Remastered if you are new, using a current console, or looking for the most convenient complete package with modern visuals and updated play systems. Play the original Oblivion if your priority is the 2006 presentation, the PC Construction Set or a mature legacy-mod installation. If you own both, keep them as separate experiences rather than trying to make one replace the other: Remastered is the modern entry point, while the original remains the preservation and modding choice.
