North Fort Law in Grand Theft Auto VI is a reference to the North Fort Law Military Base from the original 1997 Grand Theft Auto. Trailer viewers spotted the name on Jason Duval’s shirt: “U.S. Army Marauder Combat Training School, North Fort Law.” The wording strongly suggests an intentional callback, but Rockstar has not said that the old base returns as a playable location or that its 2D-universe geography carries directly into GTA VI’s HD universe.
What the North Fort Law reference means
Jason’s shirt, shown in the Grand Theft Auto VI launch trailer, appears to identify a military training school called North Fort Law. Trailer analysis connects that name to North Fort Law Military Base, an obscure location from the first Grand Theft Auto. Because the reference is printed as part of Jason’s clothing rather than presented in dialogue, it functions as environmental backstory and a franchise Easter egg at the same time.

In the original Grand Theft Auto, Fort Law is a district in New Guernsey. North Fort Law Military Base is listed as a point of interest within that district. The “Heist Almighty – Penetrator” mission
The base appears in the mission “Heist Almighty – Penetrator.” During that mission, the player helps Mason escape after he steals secret files from the military base. That mission is the clearest in-game context for North Fort Law in the original title: it is an active military installation tied to a theft and getaway, not merely a name on a map.
Remembering that context helps explain why the shirt attracted attention. North Fort Law is not a famous modern-series landmark such as a major city or recurring character; it is a deep-cut location from the franchise’s earliest setting.

Does this prove GTA VI goes to Liberty City?
No. Jason’s shirt does not prove that GTA VI takes place in Liberty City, nor does it confirm that North Fort Law is a visitable base in the new game. The shirt supplies direct trailer evidence of a name, but no official statement has connected that name to a GTA VI map location.

The first interpretation is the strongest because it requires the fewest assumptions. The second is plausible but unverified. The last two remain speculation until Rockstar identifies the setting or shows the location in official material.
2D and HD universes: why the geography is uncertain
The original game’s North Fort Law is part of the 2D universe’s New Guernsey geography. GTA VI belongs to the HD universe established by later games. A shared name can be a deliberate nod without making every map, district or historical event identical across continuities.

That distinction matters for theories that treat New Guernsey as the same place as New Jersey, or that use the shirt to place GTA VI near Liberty City. Those theories can be discussed as fan interpretations, but they are not official facts. The evidence currently supports a name reference, not a verified transfer of the old map into the new one.
What Rockstar has officially confirmed about GTA VI
Rockstar’s launch announcement, dated October 15, 2026, frames Jason and Lucia as partners whose criminal situation is deteriorating. Its quoted description says: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them.” The announcement confirms the launch trailer but does not identify North Fort Law as a GTA VI destination.

Until official gameplay or location information says otherwise, the North Fort Law wording should be read as a trailer clue rather than a confirmed feature.

North Fort Law in GTA VI is best understood as a deliberate-looking reference to the military base from the original Grand Theft Auto. It links Jason’s apparent military connection with a very early piece of series lore.
