It makes most sense if you already own a compatible drive and a Thunderbolt 5 computer; a slower host or SSD will limit speed. ORICO’s advertised 6000 MB/s read and 5800 MB/s write are theoretical figures, not a guarantee of what your setup will achieve.
What the ORICO X50 is—and what it isn’t
The X50 turns a compatible internal NVMe drive into portable storage. ORICO lists the model as ORICO-X50, with a Thunderbolt 5 interface, an aluminum-alloy body, and support for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is not a self-contained SSD in its diskless configuration: you supply and install the drive.

The manufacturer’s catalog lists the enclosure at 110 × 60 × 18.7 mm and includes a 0.5 m USB-C-to-USB-C 80G cable, a manual, two thermal conductive silicone pieces, and a screwdriver. Will your SSD and computer work with it?
Check the drive before buying
The It’s FOSS review says the X50 supports bare M.2 2280 NVMe drives, including M Key and B+M Key types. It does not support M.2 SATA or 2230 drives, and an SSD with its own attached heatsink will not fit, according to that review. If you plan to reuse a drive, verify its interface, length, and physical profile before opening the enclosure.
Check the host connection
A Thunderbolt 5 enclosure cannot make a Thunderbolt 4 or other slower host link behave like Thunderbolt 5. The It’s FOSS test laptop negotiated a 40Gbps link because it had Thunderbolt 4; Windows Central tested the X50 on a Thunderbolt 5 port. A compatible Thunderbolt 5 computer is therefore relevant if you need the highest potential bandwidth, but it is not essential for basic portable storage.

How fast is the ORICO X50 in published tests?
The two reviews report different results from different systems and drives. They are useful examples of what those particular configurations achieved, not a controlled head-to-head comparison.

The It’s FOSS review also reported 1512 MB/s random read at QD32 (369K IOPS), 1175 MB/s random write at QD32 (287K IOPS), and 59 MB/s random read at QD1 (14.4K IOPS, 34 μs latency). Its mixed 70% read/30% write result was 1483 MB/s. The same test copied a 10GB single file in 11.8 seconds and 5000 small 4KB files in 17.5 seconds. These figures belong to its stated Ubuntu, SSD, and Thunderbolt 4 configuration, rather than every X50 setup.

For a meaningful comparison with another enclosure or a prebuilt portable SSD, compare results only when the host link, drive, benchmark method, and workload are similar. A headline speed from a faster host is not a fair prediction for a slower computer.
Cooling, noise, and installation
Fanless operation
The X50 has no fan, so it avoids fan noise. ORICO says its cooling design uses micro-fins, hydrogel thermal film, and other layers, and claims 200% greater heat-dissipation area and near-0 dB operation. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently verified comparative measurements.

In the It’s FOSS review, the enclosure was reported to remain in the 60s °C during a 13-minute sustained write. Windows Central advises considering active cooling for demanding storage use. The available tests do not establish a universal temperature or show how the X50 compares thermally with other enclosures under matched workloads.

Fitting and removing the drive
The X50 is intended for a bare compatible SSD, not a drive with a fitted heatsink. Windows Central also found the bottom panel difficult to remove after installation. Plan to install the drive carefully and avoid assuming that swapping it will be as convenient as plugging in a finished portable SSD.

Linux and day-to-day use
On the Ubuntu 26.04 system with Linux kernel 7.0 used for the It’s FOSS review, the drive was recognized as a native NVMe device, SMART data was available, and it worked without additional setup. Abhishek Prakash summarized that test by writing, “Works out of the box on Linux, with full NVMe SMART data.” This is a report from that specific setup, not a compatibility guarantee for every Linux distribution or computer.
Windows Central described a stable connection and performance as advertised during its testing period. Both reviewers disclosed that ORICO supplied their review samples: It’s FOSS identified the supplied device, while Windows Central said ORICO supplied a sample and had no input into its review before publication.
Who should consider the X50?
- It is a good fit if you have a bare M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, want a small fanless enclosure, and can use a host connection suited to your speed needs.
- Look elsewhere if your drive is M.2 SATA, 2230, or has an attached heatsink, or if you need a ready-to-use storage device without installing a drive.
- Choose based on workload if you regularly write large amounts of data for extended periods: fanless silence may matter less than active cooling, and the published tests do not settle long-term thermal behavior.
- Check the included-storage option if you do not already own a drive. ORICO lists both diskless and storage-equipped versions, but available capacity and current price depend on the live listing.
