Orico TB5 Dock Review: Thunderbolt 5 Storage and Extra Ports in One Device

The Orico DockPro Thunderbolt 5 Storage Docking Station (ORICO-DockPro-T5) makes the most sense if you need both a multiport dock and fast local storage: it combines Thunderbolt 5 expansion with an internal M.2 NVMe slot. If you only need an SSD enclosure, or only need more ports, the combined device is harder to justify. PCWorld contributor Jon L. Jacobi reached a similar conclusion after testing it, calling it a short-list candidate for buyers who want extra ports alongside a fast SSD.

What the Orico TB5 dock combines

The DockPro is a dock with an empty internal M.2 NVMe slot, not a ready-to-use storage drive. You supply and install the SSD. Orico lists support for drives up to 8TB; check the chosen drive’s physical fit and the manufacturer’s compatibility details before buying.

Orico’s published specifications describe an aluminum-alloy enclosure measuring 166 × 85 × 23 mm. The manufacturer lists these connections and features:

  • One Thunderbolt 5 host input, specified for 80G/120G and PD 140W.
  • Two downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports.
  • Three 10Gbps USB-A ports and one 10Gbps USB-C port.
  • SD and TF 4.0 card slots, with simultaneous card reading listed.
  • HDMI, DisplayPort, 2.5GbE Ethernet, and a 3.5mm headset jack.
  • A maximum 180W power input, specified as 20V/9A.

Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every computer, cable, display, or peripheral can use every maximum at once. Orico lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support, but buyers should still verify compatibility with their specific host and setup.

How fast is its Thunderbolt 5 storage?

Do not interpret the advertised 120Gbps figure as the dock’s SSD transfer speed. PCWorld explains that 120Gbps is a one-way bandwidth mode for video workloads. Storage uses bidirectional bandwidth up to 80Gbps; the review describes that link as capable of approximately 6GB/s sequential throughput under suitable conditions. These figures describe different workloads, not competing measurements of the same transfer.

Orico separately advertises read/write speeds of up to 6000MB/s. That is a manufacturer claim, not a universal result for every SSD or computer. In PCWorld’s testing, the dock held a Crucial T705 PCIe 5.0 SSD and was connected to a Z790 system running Windows 11 22H2 with an Intel Core i5-12400 and integrated graphics. Jacobi reported very strong storage performance, including a 48GB transfer result, and placed it near the top of the external SSD comparisons in that review.

Those results belong to the review’s drive and test setup. SSD model and capacity, NAND configuration, cache behavior, how full the drive is, and the host system can all affect performance. Jacobi’s assessment is that a PCIe 4.0 SSD is sufficient to saturate the dock’s 80Gbps storage link; buying a PCIe 5.0 drive is not necessary just to reach that link’s limit.

Displays and port layout

Orico lists support for one display at up to 8K at 30Hz or two displays at up to 4K at 60Hz. These are manufacturer-listed configurations; actual output depends on the computer, graphics capability, displays, and connection setup. PCWorld’s own HDMI and DisplayPort checks used one 4K display at 60Hz, so that review does not establish how every multi-display configuration performs.

What to know before buying

You must install your own SSD

The dock’s M.2 slot is empty when purchased, so include the cost of a compatible NVMe SSD in your total. PCWorld describes the slot as PCIe 4.0 and reports that the reviewed unit had a magnetic bottom access plate; the SSD retaining screw was supplied separately in the box. Orico’s published capacity limit is up to 8TB.

iVANKY FusionDock Max 2 Upgraded 23-in-1 Intel Certified Thunderbolt 5 Dock
  • 【Note before Buying】FusionDock Max 2 is not compatible with any Windows and Chrome laptop, and it is restricted to only one Mac and does not support switching between other Macs.
  • 【Upgraded Silent Cooling】 Aerospace-grade thermal materials draw heat from critical components through the metal frame and spread it across the full-aluminum chassis, turning the enclosure into a large cooling surface for stable performance. 🔥No internal cooling fan means no fan noise. Surface warmth under load is expected as heat moves outward. In a 12-hour full-load test, the hottest outer-frame point reached just 49°C (120°F)—well below the applicable 60°C (140°F) UL touch-temperature limit, supporting safe, reliable long-term use.

The reviewed price is historical, not a current quote

PCWorld listed the dock at $329.99 when its review was published on October 5, 2026. That is review-time context, not a verified current selling price. Compare the price you find now plus the SSD you need against the cost of buying a separate dock and SSD enclosure; the available evidence does not establish a current market-wide value ranking.

Should you buy the Orico TB5 dock?

Consider it when one device needs to handle both your desk’s port expansion and a fast, locally installed NVMe drive. Its combination of Thunderbolt 5 connections, USB ports, card readers, display outputs, Ethernet, and an M.2 slot is the central reason to shortlist it.

Look elsewhere if your main goal is storage alone, if you do not need this range of dock connections, or if the front-port spacing and manual power button would frustrate your routine. A separate dock and SSD enclosure may suit you better if you want to choose or replace those components independently. As Jacobi put it in PCWorld’s review: “Though pricey for pure storage, if you need more ports along with your super-fast 80Gbps SSD, the TB5 is a short-lister.”
