Lower search demand, seasonality, ranking or indexing changes, site migrations, a less compelling search result, and measurement differences can all contribute. Before moving budget, use Search Console to identify which queries and pages changed, then compare those findings with demand and on-site outcomes.
Start with the pattern, not a suspected cause
Clicks are an outcome, not a diagnosis. In Google Search Console, compare clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. Treat each pattern as a clue to investigate, not proof of a single cause.

- Impressions fell: Check whether demand changed, pages lost visibility, or pages became ineligible or were no longer indexed.
- Impressions stayed similar while clicks fell: Examine CTR, the result snippet, and what now appears on the search results page.
- Average position fell: Investigate query- and page-level ranking changes, as well as technical issues that could affect visibility.
Google recommends finding the queries and pages behind a change and using Google Trends to check whether interest shifted beyond your site. These comparisons narrow the investigation; they do not establish a cause on their own. Google’s guide to debugging Search traffic drops explains the approach.

Make sure you are comparing the right measurement
Confirm that the Search Console property covers the site and protocol you mean to investigate. Then check whether the decline appears in Search Console clicks, Analytics sessions, or both. Search Console measures performance in Google Search; Analytics measures behavior after people arrive. Their totals use different systems and are not expected to match exactly. Google’s comparison of Search Console and Analytics describes the distinction.
#1 Best Overall
Choose a useful comparison period
Use Search Console’s 16-month performance view for context, and compare equivalent periods where possible. Account for seasonality, holidays, and broader trends instead of treating a short-term dip as a lasting shift. Google’s performance report documentation describes the report and its time range.
Segment the decline
Compare the affected queries and pages, then break results down by country, device, and search appearance. A sitewide total can hide a loss concentrated in one section, market, or type of search result. Use Google Trends alongside Search Console to help distinguish a change in wider interest from a site-specific visibility change. Google’s traffic-drop guide recommends investigating the queries that lost clicks and impressions and checking trends in demand.
Rank #2
Investigate changes that can reduce visibility or clicks
Review technical and site changes
Check recent migrations, URL changes, canonicalization, crawling, indexing, and periods of site unavailability. When URLs change, Google must recrawl and reindex pages, and rankings can fluctuate during that process. Review the timing of the decline against deployment and migration records rather than assuming a content or AI-related cause. Google’s debugging guidance covers these possible causes.

Inspect the result page when CTR drops
If impressions are holding but fewer people click, inspect the actual search results for affected queries. Check whether the snippet still represents the page clearly and whether the results page has changed. A CTR decline is a reason to examine the result and the query context; it does not, by itself, identify AI Overviews as the reason.
Rank #3
Interpret AI Overview evidence carefully
Know what Search Console counts
Search Console counts a click on an external link in an AI Overview as a click. It assigns the links within an Overview the same position, so that position should not be read as a conventional ranking distinction among those links. Google’s Search Console performance-data documentation describes how clicks and position are counted.
Separate platform-wide claims from panel findings
In an August 6, 2025 post, Google Search head Liz Reid said that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google also said average click quality increased, defining quality clicks as those where users do not quickly click back. These are Google’s own aggregate claims, not independent verification and not a result for any individual publisher. Google’s August 2025 statement gives its account.
A separate 2026 study examined one month of Google browsing data from a representative panel of 900 U.S. adults. The authors reported that 18% of searches in the study generated an AI Overview. Among visits to pages with an Overview, 8% included a click on a search result, compared with 15% of visits to pages without one; 1% of visits to Overview pages included a click to a cited source. Browsing sessions ended on 26% of Overview pages, compared with 16% of pages without an Overview. The authors report that the association remained after controlling for panelist and query attributes. The study’s findings and methods describe its panel and measures.

Use business outcomes to decide where SEO budget goes
Search clicks matter in relation to what they bring to the business. Use Analytics to examine landing-page engagement and conversions alongside Search Console’s query and page performance. A fall in clicks with steady valuable conversions may call for a different response than a fall in qualified visits and business results. Google’s explanation of the two measurement tools clarifies which questions each can answer.
For each proposed investment, define:
- Observed cause: Is the work tied to a measured change in demand, CTR, ranking, or technical health?
- Business value: Do the affected pages or queries contribute to leads, sales, subscriptions, or another outcome the organization values?
- Evidence: Is the case based on your own Search Console and Analytics data, an official measurement definition, a company-reported aggregate, or a third-party study?
- Time horizon: Is this a technical correction or a longer-term content or demand investment?
- Measurement plan: Which queries, pages, conversions, or engagement measures will indicate whether the work helped?
Prioritize work that addresses a diagnosed problem and has a measurable connection to business outcomes. The cited guidance and studies do not establish a universal SEO spending percentage or rank tactics for every publisher.
