An anonymous r/IndiaFinance poster says a monthly salary of ₹1.3 lakh still leaves little room for casual spending after rent, family support, an EMI and other allocations. The poster’s listed amounts add up to ₹1.2 lakh, including ₹10,000 set aside for SIPs or investments, with ₹10,000 left over. The post does not say whether the salary is gross or take-home pay, and its figures have not been independently verified.
What the Reddit poster said
In a post published on October 1, 2026, an anonymous r/IndiaFinance user described earning ₹1,30,000 a month and feeling that the money disappeared despite the income sounding substantial. “Meanwhile I’m sitting at home calculating whether ordering a ₹250 meal is a financial decision,” the poster wrote. They also said, “₹1.3 lakh sounds rich until you have ₹1.3 lakh worth of responsibilities.” These are the poster’s account and words, not a verified picture of Indian earners generally. Read the original Reddit post.
The poster listed the following monthly allocations:
| Category | Amount reported |
|---|---|
| Rent | ₹30,000 |
| Parents and family | ₹12,000 |
| Groceries | ₹8,000 |
| Electricity, internet and phone | ₹6,000 |
| Petrol and transport | ₹7,000 |
| EMI | ₹15,000 |
| SIP and investments | ₹10,000 |
| Insurance and medical | ₹5,000 |
| Eating outside | ₹4,000 |
| Subscriptions | ₹3,000 |
| Forgotten UPI payments, as described by the poster | ₹5,000 |
| Clothes, toiletries and household items | ₹5,000 |
| Miscellaneous | ₹10,000 |
| Total listed allocations | ₹1,20,000 |
| Stated monthly income | ₹1,30,000 |
| Remaining after listed allocations | ₹10,000 |
The arithmetic reconciles: the allocations total ₹1.2 lakh, leaving ₹10,000 from the stated ₹1.3 lakh. Because the list includes ₹10,000 marked for SIPs or investments, the whole ₹1.2 lakh should not be read as consumption. The post does not clarify whether ₹1.3 lakh is gross salary or post-tax take-home income. Hindustan Times reported the post on October 2 and noted that the social-media claims were not independently verified. Read the Hindustan Times report.

What the numbers do—and do not—show
The post is a snapshot of one person’s stated allocations, not a representative budget or an income benchmark. Commenters suggested tracking transactions and examining the forgotten UPI payments and miscellaneous category. Others criticized particular allocations, including rent, subscriptions, insurance and clothing, while some questioned the post’s credibility. Those responses are opinions; they do not establish that any listed amount is objectively too high or that the poster is overspending.
One commenter observed that rent, family support and the EMI add up to ₹57,000. That calculation is correct for the amounts listed, but whether those costs are manageable depends on circumstances the post does not provide, including location, household needs and the nature of the EMI.

How to find where a budget is going
Record what actually leaves your account
The Reserve Bank of India describes a budget as a plan for future income and expenses and advises comparing that plan with actual expenditure: “Comparing the budget with the actual expenditure will show where you spent more (or less).” Its financial-planning material recommends keeping a financial diary of income and expenses for a period such as a week or a month. See the RBI’s Financial Awareness Messages (FAME) and RBI’s I Can Do Financial Planning.
A practical first step is to log every payment, including small UPI transactions, subscriptions and irregular purchases, before deciding which category to change. A notebook, spreadsheet, bank records or a digital tracker can all help; what matters is recording consistently enough to see the pattern. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a US agency, similarly suggests tracking spending for at least two weeks or a month and looking for surprising expenses and unused subscriptions. This is general tracking guidance, not India-specific regulation or product advice. Read the CFPB’s spending-tracker guidance.

Choose a method you will keep using
- Notebook or financial diary: straightforward for jotting down cash and digital purchases, but entries need to be made consistently.
- Spreadsheet: useful for categorising transactions and comparing planned amounts with actual totals; it requires manual upkeep unless records are imported.
- Bank records or a digital tracker: can make payment history easier to review, but may not capture cash spending or explain what a transaction was for. Check privacy and data access before connecting accounts to any service.
No cited guidance establishes one best tool or a need to buy one. The purpose is to make actual spending visible, not to assume that a particular category is wrong before reviewing the records.
