Optical see-through optics let light from the room reach your eyes directly and add digital images on top. Video passthrough cameras capture the room, and internal displays show you a live camera view combined with virtual content. Choose optical see-through when an uninterrupted, direct view of the physical world is the priority; choose video passthrough when software-controlled blending, occlusion and room-scale spatial computing matter more. Neither category is automatically safer or better for every task.
The essential difference
| Question | Optical see-through | Video passthrough |
|---|---|---|
| What reaches your eyes? | Light from the physical environment travels through transparent or waveguide optics; rendered graphics are added to that view. | External cameras capture the environment; displays inside the headset show a processed video feed with virtual imagery. |
| Representative examples in the cited sources | Microsoft HoloLens; Meta Orion, which Meta describes as an optical AR research device. | Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3. |
| Main design strength | Direct awareness of the real scene without replacing it with a camera image. | Software can control the composite image, including virtual-object placement and occlusion. |
| Main limitation | Overlay visibility and field of view depend heavily on the particular optical design and lighting. | The camera view is not natural eyesight; depth, color, dynamic range and low-light perception can be degraded. |
Microsoft’s mixed-reality documentation defines HoloLens as a holographic device with a “See-through display” that lets the wearer see the physical environment directly (Microsoft Learn). Apple defines passthrough in its immersive-experience guidance as real-time video from the device’s external cameras (Apple Human Interface Guidelines). Those definitions describe the optical path, not a complete product ranking.

How optical see-through works
A direct view with a digital layer
Transparent lenses, waveguides or related optics remain in front of your eyes while the room stays visible through them. A projector or display engine injects light into the optics so text, symbols and three-dimensional objects appear aligned with the environment. Your eye therefore receives two contributions: real-world light and display light.
Recommended Free Tools
This arrangement is valuable when you must keep seeing people, tools or a changing workspace as they actually appear. There is no camera image that can freeze, drop frames or lose detail in a dark corner. However, the digital image must compete with ambient light. Bright rooms can wash out an overlay, while a dim room may make the physical scene easy to see but leave the display constrained by its own brightness and contrast limits.

Field of view is an optical-design property
Do not treat “optical see-through” as a single field-of-view specification. Microsoft Research’s FoveAR page, published November 9, 2015, said optical design and weight considerations at that time limited diagonal field of view to less than 40 degrees (Microsoft Research). That historical statement describes the designs discussed on that page, not every current device.
As a contrasting manufacturer claim, Meta describes its Orion optical AR research device as having approximately a 70-degree field of view, using micro-LED projectors and silicon-carbide optics (Meta Orion). Orion is presented as a research device; that page does not establish ordinary consumer retail availability. The two figures come from different years, systems and measurement contexts, so they are not a controlled head-to-head test.
Where optical see-through can be difficult
- Virtual graphics may be visible only within a limited “window” rather than across your full view.
- Opaque or dark virtual objects cannot always hide a real object, because the real scene remains optically present unless the hardware adds a separate dimming mechanism.
- Brightness, contrast, eye box, calibration and fit affect whether text remains legible while you move.
- Peripheral vision is not implied by the category name; inspect the specific device’s optical layout and fit.
How video passthrough works
A camera-to-display pipeline
Cameras on the headset capture the room. A processor synchronizes those feeds with head tracking, reconstructs a view for each eye and draws virtual objects into the same display. The result can look like a blended room, but you are looking at screens rather than directly through the front of the headset.

A virtual table can cover part of a real desk in the rendered view; a digital window can be placed on a wall; and a scene mesh can help content remain anchored as you walk. The quality of those effects depends on camera calibration, tracking, rendering and the scene data available to the application.

Passthrough is not natural vision
Meta’s developer health guidance states: “Passthrough allows users to have more awareness of the physical environment; however, it is not equivalent to natural human vision.” The same guidance explains that head-mounted displays have limited field of view and are less accurate at representing cues such as depth and color (Meta passthrough guidance, updated July 25, 2025).
That distinction matters in low light, high contrast and fast-moving situations. Cameras and displays have their own exposure, focus, noise, color and dynamic-range limits. A preprint by Wang, Ping, Xu, Li and Liang reports testing visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and color vision on Apple Vision Pro, Quest 3 and Quest Pro; the tested systems did not match naked-eye dynamic range and adaptability, with greater degradation in low light (2026 preprint). It is a preprint result tied to those devices and that protocol, not a universal score for every passthrough headset.
Latency can be excellent without becoming zero
Apple says its Vision Pro R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones, then streams new images to the displays within 12 milliseconds (Apple Newsroom, June 5, 2023). This is Apple’s specification for that system, not a category-wide passthrough benchmark. Even a short pipeline delay can matter when you turn quickly or reach for a real object, so evaluate the actual device and software rather than assuming all camera-mediated views feel identical.
What changes in day-to-day use
Blending, occlusion and anchoring
Video passthrough has a structural advantage when an application needs to control every pixel. The renderer can place a virtual object behind a scanned sofa, tint the room, or hide portions of the camera image to create a deliberate composition. Optical see-through systems add light to the scene instead. They can anchor a hologram convincingly, but the real object remains physically visible through the optics, so complete occlusion and photographic effects are more constrained.

That does not make optical overlays inaccurate by definition. Registration still depends on tracking and calibration in both categories. It means the categories offer different controls: optical systems preserve the scene and layer on graphics; video systems replace the visual path with a computed representation that software can edit.
Depth and color cues
Direct sight provides the eye’s natural optical cues, although the overlay may have its own depth and focus limitations. Passthrough reconstructs those cues from cameras, sensors and rendering. Meta specifically cautions developers not to assume that scene information or passthrough replaces physical boundaries (Meta passthrough guidance). For work that depends on judging a thin edge, a step or a fast-moving object, test the exact application under the lighting and motion conditions you will use.
Field of view and peripheral awareness
A narrow optical window can make a hologram disappear when you look away, while a camera headset can crop the room through display limits. Neither category guarantees broad peripheral vision. Measure the specific device, account for prescription inserts and facial fit, and check whether a warning, cursor or person remains visible when you glance sideways.

Weight distribution, lens geometry, facial interface, eye relief, cable placement and thermal behavior vary more between models than between the two labels. A glasses-shaped optical device may be easier to wear for short, mobile tasks, while a larger passthrough headset may provide more cameras, processing and display area. Those are design choices, not rules; compare the actual hardware and intended session length.

What the user studies show—and what they do not
The 2025 passthrough-quality study
A 2025 study recruited 31 participants to read text and solve a puzzle using Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3 and Varjo XR3. Its abstract reports that Vision Pro received the highest passthrough-quality ratings among the tested devices (study abstract). The result compares those three products, tasks and conditions. It does not prove that one brand or all passthrough systems are universally superior, and it does not compare them with every optical-see-through device.
The 2026 perceptual preprint
The 2026 preprint measured visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and color vision on Apple Vision Pro, Quest 3 and Quest Pro. Its reported mismatch with naked-eye dynamic range and adaptability, especially in low light, reinforces a practical rule: judge a camera view under the lighting, contrast and movement your task actually presents. Because the work is a preprint, treat the findings as provisional and protocol-specific.

Choose optical see-through when direct sight is the primary requirement
- You need the physical scene to remain optically present while digital prompts sit on top.
- You move through a changing environment and want direct visual confirmation of people and objects.
- Your application benefits from lightweight, glanceable annotations rather than a fully reconstructed room.
- Camera-mediated color, exposure or low-light limitations would undermine the task.
Still verify overlay brightness, text legibility, eye-box tolerance and the size of the usable optical window. A direct view does not guarantee a wide field of view or perfect registration.

Choose video passthrough when software-controlled mixed reality is the primary requirement
- You need virtual objects to occlude, intersect with or appear behind scanned physical surfaces.
- You want room-scale spatial computing, large virtual screens or a fully managed visual environment.
- Your application can validate scene meshes, boundaries and tracking before allowing interaction.
- You can control lighting and accept that the camera view is an approximation of natural sight.
Check camera quality, display resolution, motion-to-photon behavior, low-light performance and the recovery path when tracking or scene understanding fails. A high-quality passthrough experience remains camera-mediated.

When neither category is automatically right
If the activity involves driving, heights, machinery, stairs, uneven ground or precise physical manipulation, do not rely on a category label as a safety approval. Use task-specific validation, supervision and the manufacturer’s boundary mechanisms. A headset that looks clear in a static room may not provide adequate cues during rapid movement or changing illumination.
Safety: treat the virtual room as an aid, not a barrier
Meta’s guidance recommends clearing the activity space, avoiding uneven surfaces such as stairs or ramps, and removing fragile objects. It warns that virtual content can intersect with unmarked physical objects or appear beyond the room when scene or boundary information is absent (Meta passthrough guidance).
- Prepare the area. Move furniture, cables and breakable items out of the active space. Do not assume the headset will identify every obstacle.
- Establish boundaries. Confirm that the device’s boundary or guardian is visible and correctly mapped before starting an immersive session.
- Check lighting. Test the view where the task occurs, including shadows and low-light corners; camera tracking and visual fidelity can change with illumination.
- Validate movement. Walk slowly, turn your head and reach toward representative objects before attempting faster or more precise actions.
- Stop on uncertainty. If tracking drifts, the scene disappears, or an object’s position is unclear, remove the headset or pause the task and re-establish the boundary.
These precautions apply especially strongly to video passthrough because the displayed room is a sensor-derived representation. Optical see-through does not eliminate hazards: a limited optical window, bright reflections or an obscured overlay can still reduce awareness.
A practical evaluation checklist
Use the following sequence when selecting or piloting a device for a real workflow:
- Define the visual priority. Write down whether the task requires direct physical sight, controllable digital occlusion, or both.
- Specify the environment. Record lighting range, reflective surfaces, room size, moving people and the presence of stairs or fragile equipment.
- Test the full field of view. Read labels, look toward the edges and glance behind the overlay. Note where information clips or disappears.
- Test depth and color. Compare a real ruler, cable, edge and colored object with the displayed view. Repeat in dim and high-contrast conditions.
- Test motion. Turn quickly, walk and reach. Observe image stability, alignment and any delay between head movement and the scene.
- Test failure recovery. Cover a camera, leave the mapped area or introduce a new object and document the warning, tracking loss and restart procedure.
- Assess wearability. Measure comfort over the intended session length, including glasses, hair, protective equipment and any required prescription inserts.
- Set a safety boundary. Decide which tasks are prohibited, who supervises first use and what physical safeguards remain mandatory.
How to interpret product examples
Microsoft HoloLens is used in Microsoft Learn as an optical-see-through example; that page defines the display class rather than serving as a current buying comparison (Microsoft Learn). Meta Orion is a company-described optical AR research device with the field-of-view and component claims noted above; its technology page does not establish standard consumer availability (Meta Orion).
Apple Vision Pro is a video-passthrough spatial-computing headset, and Meta Quest 3 is a video-passthrough headset named in the 2025 user-experience study. Those references identify device classes and study participants, not current prices, stock status or a universal recommendation. Availability, software support and regional listings can change, so verify them immediately before purchase or deployment.
Bottom line for the decision
Start with the viewing path your task can tolerate. Optical see-through preserves a direct view of the world and adds graphics, making it the better fit when physical awareness must remain primary. Video passthrough gives software a richer canvas for occlusion, anchoring and room-scale composition, but its room view is reconstructed and can lose natural depth, color or low-light fidelity. Compare the exact device under your lighting, movement and safety conditions; the category names alone cannot answer the choice.
