True Food Kitchen filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on October 4, 2026, and closed 12 restaurants at or around the same time. The company says its remaining restaurants are open and serving guests while it restructures and runs a court-supervised process to find a long-term partner. Oprah Winfrey is a minority investor, but reporting says she has no board seat and no role in running the business.

What this means if you eat at True Food Kitchen

Chapter 11 is a court-supervised restructuring. A company that files under it generally keeps operating while it reorganizes its debts, sells assets, or looks for a buyer. True Food Kitchen says it is doing exactly that. Its official FAQ states that open restaurants are welcoming guests as usual, that there are no menu or pricing changes because of the filing, and that reservations, delivery, catering, and gift cards continue at open locations, subject to normal availability.

The practical question for most customers is not whether the chain exists, but whether a specific restaurant is still open. That depends on location, so check before you go.

Which 12 restaurants closed

Fox Business, reporting on the filing, identified the closed locations as follows:

#1 Best Overall
Sale
True Food: Seasonal, Sustainable, Simple, Pure
  • The #1 bestseller that presents seasonal, sustainable, and delicious recipes from Dr. Andrew Weil's popular True Food Kitchen restaurants.
  • California: Century City, El Segundo, and San Diego UTC
  • Miami
  • Chicago
  • New Orleans
  • Bethesda, Maryland
  • New Jersey: Edison and Hackensack
  • Garden City, New York
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Reston, Virginia

The same report said 34 restaurants across 14 states remained open at the time of filing. That count is a reported figure from the filing date, not a live tally, and it can change as the process moves forward.

How the sale process and financing are structured

A sale, not a named buyer

True Food Kitchen says it is seeking a long-term partner through a court-supervised sale process. No buyer has been identified in the coverage available as of this writing, and nothing reported so far indicates that a deal has been agreed.

The financing commitment

Fox Business reported an approximately $20 million financing commitment from HumanCo TFK IV, subject to court approval. Treat that commitment as pending. It should not be described as approved unless a later court record confirms approval.

The debt and cash figures

The filing figures below come from court documents and a financial adviser, as reported by Fox Business. They have not been checked against the bankruptcy docket for this article, so read them as reported numbers.

Figure Reported amount Attributed to
Funded debt obligations at filing About $42.1 million Nathan Cook, Chief Restructuring Officer, per court documents
Unrestricted cash at filing About $1.6 million George N. Koutsonicolis, financial adviser, per court documents
Financing commitment About $20 million, subject to court approval True Food Kitchen, as reported by Fox Business

What management says went wrong

In a court declaration, Chief Restructuring Officer Nathan Cook attributed the company’s problems largely to internal instability. As quoted by Fox Business, Cook said: “The Company experienced significant management turnover, which resulted in frequent changes to expansion strategy, brand direction, and menu offerings.”

The same report says Cook also pointed to several other factors:

  • New products and restaurant concepts that did not work and drifted from the chain’s health-focused mission.
  • Pandemic-era ghost-kitchen and delivery-only experiments that reportedly hurt staffing and service.
  • Some restaurants struggling to attract guests.
  • Profitability eroding in some markets as local conditions changed.

These are management’s account in court materials. They are not an independently verified full explanation of why the company filed.

Oprah Winfrey’s role

Winfrey made an equity investment in the company in 2018, according to Fox Business, and remains a minority investor. The outlet reported that she has no representative on the board and is not involved in day-to-day management. The “Oprah-backed” label in headlines describes an investment, not operational control, and should be read that way.

What the company says about its future

Chief Executive Officer Jeff Chandler framed the filing as a step toward a simpler business: “This process is the best path forward to simplify the business and focus on what we do best: delivering craveable, health-forward food and genuine hospitality,” as quoted by Fox Business. That is the company’s stated intent. Whether the sale produces a stable owner for the remaining restaurants is not yet known.

How to confirm whether a location is open

  1. Open the official True Food Kitchen location directory on the company website and find the restaurant you plan to visit.
  2. Check the listed hours and status for that location, since operating status is set restaurant by restaurant.
  3. If you want to reserve a table, order delivery, book catering, or use a gift card, confirm the service is available at that location. The company says these services continue at open restaurants, subject to normal availability.
  4. For details on the case itself, use the case-information site linked from the company’s FAQ rather than secondhand summaries.
  5. Recheck these pages before relying on them for a planned visit, a catering order, or a large gift-card balance, because the sale process and restaurant status can change.

Gift cards deserve particular care. The company says gift cards continue to be accepted at open restaurants, but a card redeemable only at a closed location is a different situation. If you hold a card for one of the 12 closed restaurants, contact the company through its official channels before assuming it can be used elsewhere.

What remains uncertain

  • The status of the sale and the identity of any eventual buyer.
  • Whether the court approves the $20 million financing commitment.
  • Whether additional restaurants close during the process. The 34-location figure is a snapshot from the filing.
  • The full set of debt, cash, and cause-of-distress details, which are based on reporting and court declarations rather than an independent review of the docket.

The company’s FAQ and location directory are the best sources for current operating information, and the case-information site is the place to track the bankruptcy itself.
