OPPO Reno Standard vs Pro: What You Give Up Without the Pro Model

Short answer: a standard OPPO Reno usually keeps the same generation’s processor, fast charging, software features and basic durability, but removes the hardware that makes the Pro a camera-and-premium-build upgrade. In the Reno12 and Reno13 generations, the largest sacrifice is a dedicated telephoto camera with optical zoom. Depending on the generation, you may also get a smaller display, less memory and storage, a smaller battery, simpler cover glass or a less premium design. The exact gap changes by model and market, so compare the generation-specific specifications rather than assuming every “Pro” tier is identical.

The core difference: Pro money goes into imaging and materials

OPPO’s Reno naming is not a guarantee that every Pro model has a faster processor. In the Reno12 and Reno13 examples, the standard and Pro phones use the same chipset family and 80W SUPERVOOC charging. The Pro surcharge is concentrated in camera hardware, display treatment, battery capacity, exterior materials and, in Reno13’s Indian launch configurations, a higher starting memory and storage tier.

That makes the buying decision more specific than “regular versus premium.” If you mainly browse, stream, message, play games supported by the shared platform and take ordinary daylight photos, the standard Reno preserves much of the experience. If you photograph people from a distance, shoot stage performances, want optical portrait compression or value a larger, more upscale handset, the Pro’s hardware matters far more than its name.

Specifications also vary by generation and country. The comparisons below use OPPO’s Reno12 information from 2024 and Reno13 information announced for India in January 2025. Launch prices are historical Indian launch prices, not a universal current price.

Reno13: the clearest example of what disappears

Reno13 is the easier generation in which to see the Pro strategy. Both phones retain the Dimensity 8350 platform, 80W charging, the same listed AI feature set, IP66/IP68/IP69 protection and underwater-photography support under OPPO’s stated conditions. The Pro version instead adds a real optical-zoom camera, a larger display, a slightly larger battery and higher baseline memory and storage.

The specifications and launch prices in this table come from OPPO India’s January 2025 Reno13 announcement. A retailer’s later price, a different country’s configuration or a promotion can change the amount you actually pay.

The camera loss is optical reach, not the main sensor

The standard Reno13 still has a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide. What it lacks is the Pro’s 50MP telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom. Optical zoom uses a separate lens to magnify the subject before capture, so portraits, travel details, architectural elements and people on a stage can remain more detailed than they would after cropping the main camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Without that lens, the standard phone must rely on the main camera’s native view and digital cropping for distant subjects. That can be perfectly adequate for nearby people, food, documents and general snapshots, but it is a meaningful limitation when the subject cannot be approached. A concert seat, a child’s sports event or a detail across a street is exactly where the Pro’s extra camera earns its cost.

The 2MP monochrome camera on Reno13 does not replace a telephoto lens. It is a different type of auxiliary camera and should not be treated as an optical-zoom alternative.

The front-camera gap is gone in Reno13

Both Reno13 versions are listed with a 50MP autofocus front camera. That means the standard model does not lose the Pro-only selfie autofocus feature seen in Reno12. For people who use the front camera for group shots, close framing or moving subjects, the Reno13 comparison is therefore decided more by the rear telephoto and handset design than by selfie hardware.

You get less screen and a slightly smaller battery

Reno13’s 6.59-inch flat display is easier to handle for people who prefer a smaller phone. The Pro’s 6.83-inch Infinite View micro-curved panel provides more physical screen area for reading, maps, games and video, while the curved treatment gives it a more premium visual character. A larger panel can also make two-handed typing and editing more comfortable, but it increases the phone’s footprint; that is a preference trade-off, not an automatic quality score.

The standard model’s 5,600mAh battery is 200mAh below the Pro’s 5,800mAh unit. Both retain 80W SUPERVOOC, so the charging system does not become slower when you choose Reno13. Capacity is the difference: the Pro has a little more energy reserve, while actual endurance still depends on screen brightness, network conditions, camera use and software workload.

Durability and software are not the reason to upgrade

In this generation, both phones carry IP66, IP68 and IP69 ratings and both are described as supporting underwater photography under OPPO’s stated conditions. They also share the AI features listed in OPPO’s launch announcement. Choosing the standard Reno13 does not mean accepting a lower water-and-dust rating or losing the headline AI tools; the Pro premium is aimed elsewhere.

Reno12: the Pro camera and glass upgrade is more concentrated

Reno12 follows a different pattern. The standard and Pro models share many of the fundamentals: a 4nm Dimensity 7300-Energy platform, a 5,000mAh battery, 80W SUPERVOOC charging, a 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED display capable of displaying up to 1.07 billion colors, IP65 protection and 4K/30 video from both front and rear cameras.

OPPO’s 2024 global Reno12 announcement is the basis for these shared and Pro-only specifications. It describes the Pro’s telephoto portrait camera as offering up to 2x optical zoom and identifies autofocus and AI Portrait Retouching as additions to its 50MP selfie camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reno12 buyers give up the Pro portrait lens

The Reno12 Pro’s 50MP telephoto portrait camera is the defining hardware difference. Up to 2x optical zoom is less reach than Reno13 Pro’s 3.5x system, but it is still useful for framing a face without moving closer and for producing a more natural portrait perspective than an aggressive crop from the main camera.

The standard Reno12 can still produce portraits using its shared main-camera platform and software processing. The missing component is the dedicated optical path. If portraits are occasional and you usually stand close to your subject, the omission may not matter. If portraits are a primary reason for buying a Reno phone, the Pro’s lens is the feature to prioritize.

Reno12 Pro also improves selfie focusing and cover glass

The Pro adds a 50MP autofocus front camera and AI Portrait Retouching effects. Autofocus can help keep a face sharp at varying distances, particularly in group selfies or when the phone is not held at a fixed arm’s length. The standard Reno12 does not receive that documented Pro front-camera package.

Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is another Pro-only upgrade identified by OPPO. Since both phones already have the same display size, refresh rate and color-depth claim, the glass treatment—not extra screen area—is the Reno12 Pro’s display-related differentiator. A protective case and screen protector still affect real-world damage risk, so Victus 2 should be viewed as added material protection rather than a guarantee against breakage.

What stays the same across the two generations

Shared specifications are important because they prevent an incorrect assumption that the regular Reno is a fundamentally slower or less capable phone.

  • Performance platform: Reno12 uses Dimensity 7300-Energy in both versions; Reno13 uses Dimensity 8350 in both versions. The Pro label does not change the chipset within either generation.
  • Charging: Both Reno12 versions and both Reno13 versions support 80W SUPERVOOC. The standard model does not trade away the headline wired-charging system.
  • Video basics: OPPO states that both Reno12 phones record 4K/30 from front and rear cameras. That parity matters if your priority is resolution and frame rate rather than telephoto framing.
  • Software and AI: OPPO’s Reno13 launch announcement lists the same broad AI feature set for standard and Pro models. The exact availability of individual tools can still depend on software version and region.
  • Durability within a generation: Reno12 models are both rated IP65, while Reno13 models share IP66/IP68/IP69 and underwater-photography support under OPPO’s stated conditions.

These shared elements are why a standard Reno can be the sensible choice when your usage is centered on everyday speed, charging convenience, video, apps and basic protection rather than specialized imaging.

Camera decision: when optical zoom is worth paying for

Choose the standard model if your subjects are usually close

  • Most photos are taken at arm’s length or across a table.
  • You use the ultra-wide for landscapes, interiors or group scenes more often than you photograph distant subjects.
  • You are comfortable moving closer instead of changing focal length.
  • You rarely print or heavily crop images.

In these situations, the standard phone’s main and ultra-wide cameras cover the common perspectives, and the shared processor and charging system remain intact.

Choose the Pro if framing flexibility is central

  • You regularly shoot concerts, school sports, travel details or wildlife from a fixed position.
  • You want portraits with a dedicated telephoto perspective rather than a crop from the main camera.
  • You often cannot move closer to the subject.
  • You value a higher-resolution, autofocus selfie system in Reno12 specifically.

Reno13 Pro’s 3.5x optical telephoto provides more reach than Reno12 Pro’s up-to-2x optical system. That is a generation-to-generation difference, so do not use Reno12 expectations to judge Reno13 or vice versa.

Display, battery and physical design trade-offs

Screen size changes only in Reno13

Reno13 Pro is physically larger because it uses a 6.83-inch micro-curved display, while Reno13 uses a 6.59-inch flat panel. Reno12 does not create this size split: both models use a 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED display. For Reno12, the meaningful display upgrade is Victus 2 glass on the Pro, not additional inches or a higher stated refresh rate.

Battery capacity changes only in Reno13

Reno13 Pro has a 5,800mAh battery versus 5,600mAh in Reno13. Reno12 Pro and Reno12 both use 5,000mAh batteries. Because charging power is shared within each generation, moving to Pro does not buy faster charging; it buys a modest capacity increase only in Reno13.

Curved versus flat is a handling choice

A flat Reno13 screen can be preferable if you dislike accidental edge touches or want a simpler glass shape for a case and protector. The Pro’s micro-curved design emphasizes immersion and premium appearance. Neither shape alone proves that one phone is sharper or faster; those decisions belong to the generation’s shared display and processor specifications.

Price and storage: the Pro premium can also buy headroom

At Indian launch in January 2025, Reno13 started at INR 37,999 for 8GB+128GB and INR 39,999 for 8GB+256GB. Reno13 Pro started at INR 49,999 for 12GB+256GB and reached INR 54,999 for 12GB+512GB. Comparing the entry configurations, the difference was INR 12,000, but the Pro also began with 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage rather than 8GB and 128GB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means the entire price gap should not be assigned to the camera. Some of the additional spend buys more baseline RAM and storage, which can matter if you keep large games, offline video, photos or many apps on the phone. Conversely, if a discounted standard Reno offers enough storage for your routine, paying for capacity you will not use is poor value.

These are launch figures for India, not a current worldwide price list. OPPO changes availability and configuration by market, and retailers can discount either model. Check the exact regional SKU before comparing totals.

Which Reno should you buy?

Buy the standard Reno when these priorities describe you

  • You want the generation’s shared chipset and 80W charging without paying for a telephoto camera.
  • Your photography is mostly close-range people, food, documents, landscapes and casual video.
  • You prefer a smaller or flat phone in the Reno13 generation.
  • You are comfortable with the standard memory and storage configuration available in your country.
  • You want the same generation’s listed AI tools and durability rating.

Pay for the Pro when these benefits have a clear use

  • Optical zoom will be used regularly for portraits, events, travel or distant detail.
  • You want the larger Reno13 display and micro-curved treatment.
  • You need the higher starting memory and storage supplied with Reno13 Pro’s Indian launch configurations.
  • You are choosing Reno12 and specifically want its 50MP autofocus selfie camera, AI Portrait Retouching effects or Victus 2 glass.
  • The modest Reno13 battery increase is valuable to your routine and the price premium fits your budget.

Checks to make before ordering

  1. Identify the generation and market. Confirm whether the listing is Reno12, Reno12 Pro, Reno13 or Reno13 Pro and check the local OPPO specification page. Names and configurations are not interchangeable across countries.
  2. Verify the camera layout. Look specifically for a dedicated telephoto camera and its stated optical-zoom range. A high megapixel count on the main camera is not a substitute for a telephoto lens.
  3. Compare the exact memory and storage SKU. Reno13 launch configurations differed substantially between standard and Pro models, and another market may sell different combinations.
  4. Check the battery and display dimensions. Reno13 has the size and capacity split; Reno12 does not. This prevents paying for a Pro screen or battery advantage that does not exist in the generation you are considering.
  5. Read the water-resistance conditions. IP ratings and underwater-photography support do not make a phone suitable for every depth, duration or liquid. Follow OPPO’s stated conditions and care guidance.
  6. Check software availability in your region. Shared AI features can depend on software version, language and market rollout, so confirm that the tools you want are enabled on the local model.
  7. Compare the real transaction price. Use the exact storage tier, warranty region and included accessories when deciding whether the Pro premium is justified.

Bottom line

Without a Pro, you usually give up specialized camera hardware before you give up everyday performance. In Reno12, that means the 50MP 2x telephoto portrait camera, autofocus 50MP selfie camera with AI Portrait Retouching and Victus 2 glass. In Reno13, it means the 50MP 3.5x telephoto, the larger micro-curved display, 200mAh of battery capacity and the higher starting memory and storage tiers. The standard models still retain their generation’s processor, 80W charging and core software experience, and Reno13 retains the Pro’s durability ratings and listed AI features. Buy the Pro when optical reach, premium hardware or capacity directly matches how you use a phone; otherwise, the standard Reno preserves the more important fundamentals for less money.
