That is a company-level licensing status—not confirmation that every Oppo or Nidec product is covered. Coverage depends on the products reported under each agreement and the agreement’s terms.
What the report says—and what it does not
IAM reported on 8 October 2026 that Oppo and Nidec joined Via Licensing’s Qi patent pool as licensees. IAM’s indexed subtitle also describes Oppo as taking a licensor role, but the available excerpt does not provide further details about that role or the announcement. Via’s current licensee list names Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd. and Nidec Mobility Corporation.

Via says its list covers licensees and affiliates in good standing for products reported and covered under their licenses. It cautions that a company’s inclusion does not establish that any particular product it makes is licensed. The specific agreement and product reporting determine scope; chips and subassembly components are not individually covered as royalty products under the license, which distinguishes them from end-user or unified devices.

Via calls the offering the Qi Wireless Power Patent Portfolio License. It provides access to participating patent holders’ essential patent rights for the Qi Wireless Power Standard. The pool gives a company one licensing transaction as an alternative to negotiating separately with multiple participating patent holders.

The pool is not necessarily a complete clearance of all relevant rights. Via says it cannot assure that every essential patent is included. A company may need to negotiate directly with patent holders or obtain rights to patents outside the pool, including non-essential patents. Via also says the executed license agreement—not a public summary—is the definitive statement of terms.

The figures below are Via Licensing’s published program terms, not verified amounts paid by Oppo or Nidec. The actual executed agreement controls and may determine how terms apply to a particular licensee and product.

These public figures do not establish which categories, discounts, or payment amounts apply to either company. Via says the executed agreement is definitive.

The Wireless Power Consortium identifies Qi as its wireless mobile-device charging standard and provides a product database for checking certification. The Consortium also describes Qi2 and Qi2 25W as newer wireless-charging developments. Certification can help establish whether a product is listed as certified; it does not show whether the product is covered by a manufacturer’s Via license. Certification and patent-license coverage are separate questions.

Why use a pool rather than negotiate separately?
A portfolio license can reduce the number of separate transactions needed to access participating patent holders’ rights. Separate direct licenses may still be relevant when a patent is not in the pool or when a company wants to negotiate outside the portfolio. The key trade-off is convenience against coverage: a pool offers access to participating rights, but does not guarantee that all relevant patents or products are covered. Terms and product scope must be checked against the executed agreement.
