Choose Vivaldi if you want to design the browser around your own workflow. It exposes more documented controls for interface layout, tab behavior, panels, notes, themes, sessions, and commands. Choose Opera if you prefer a more guided setup with a visible sidebar, integrated services, workspaces, Tab Islands, vertical tabs, ad blocking, and VPN controls.
Both browsers are built on Chromium, so everyday website and extension compatibility is broadly similar. The important difference is not whether either can open modern sites; it is how much control you want over the browser and which built-in services you prefer.

The short answer
Vivaldi is the stronger starting point for power users who want to rearrange the interface, tune tab behavior, build workspaces, tile pages, keep notes in the browser, save sessions, and apply detailed themes. Opera is the better starting point for people who want useful organization and privacy controls presented in a more curated interface, without first exploring a deep settings tree.
Neither browser has been established as a universal winner for speed, memory use, battery life, or extension performance. Those results depend on operating system, extensions, open tabs, hardware, and settings, and the available first-party material does not provide a controlled current test that settles the question.

What Vivaldi is built to do
Vivaldi treats the browser as a configurable workspace rather than a fixed window around a web page. Its official feature list includes a built-in ad blocker, tracker blocking, Proton VPN integration, workspaces, session management, a customizable user interface, secure sync, tab tiling, sidebar notes, custom colors, and wallpapers.
That list matters because the controls work together. A person researching several subjects can separate them into workspaces, keep reference pages in tab stacks, tile related pages for side-by-side reading, save the arrangement as a session, and keep a note beside the pages instead of opening a separate application. The browser can therefore be shaped around a recurring workflow instead of merely offering a different color scheme.
Vivaldi’s customization depth
Customization in Vivaldi extends beyond themes. You can change the placement and appearance of interface elements, choose colors and wallpapers, tune tab behavior, use panels for side-by-side tools, and keep notes in the sidebar. The product also documents browser commands and extensive session controls, giving experienced users more ways to turn repeated actions into a predictable routine.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteVivaldi’s own desktop page calls it “the most customizable browser in the world.” That is a vendor claim, not an independent ranking, but the documented range of controls explains why it is the natural choice when maximum control is the deciding criterion.
Where Vivaldi asks more of you
More options create more decisions. A first-time user may need to decide how tabs should stack, where panels should appear, which colors identify a workspace, and whether sessions or workspaces better match a particular project. That learning curve is the trade-off for being able to keep refining the setup later.
If you only want a browser that looks tidy on its first launch, Vivaldi can feel more open-ended than necessary. If your work changes from week to week and the browser must change with it, the same flexibility becomes an advantage.
What Opera is built to do
Opera packages organization, privacy controls, and integrated services into a more guided experience. Its official help documentation lists a built-in ad blocker, VPN controls, Tab Islands, workspaces, and an option to encrypt synchronized data with a user-selected passphrase.

The sidebar is central to Opera’s design. It provides a visible place for workspaces, messaging and other integrated services, so useful functions are easier to discover without first learning the browser’s entire settings structure. Opera also documents vertical tabs that work with Tab Islands, workspaces, and pinned tabs.
Opera’s practical customization
Opera is customizable, but its choices are more curated. You can organize tabs into Workspaces, group related pages in Tab Islands, switch to a vertical tab presentation, pin important pages, and use the sidebar to reach integrated tools. These features cover common needs—separating projects, reducing tab sprawl, and keeping frequently used services close—without requiring the same degree of interface design that Vivaldi offers.
Where Opera is the easier fit
Someone moving from another mainstream browser can usually understand Opera’s visual model quickly: a sidebar for tools, workspaces for contexts, and tab groups for related pages. That makes it a good choice when the goal is immediate organization rather than a long customization project.
Opera’s convenience does not mean it lacks advanced features. It means the browser presents a narrower set of high-value choices first. Users who eventually want unusual layouts, highly specific tab rules, or a deeply personalized command system may find Vivaldi’s broader controls a better long-term home.
Tab management: simple grouping or a complete system?
Both browsers address the same problem—too many open pages—but they prioritize different kinds of control.
Opera: Workspaces, Tab Islands, and vertical tabs
Opera’s Workspaces let you separate contexts such as personal browsing, study, and client work. Tab Islands group related pages so a research topic or task can occupy a compact visual unit. Vertical tabs use screen height more efficiently when a horizontal tab strip becomes difficult to scan, and Opera documents their interaction with Tab Islands, workspaces, and pinned tabs.
This combination suits a reader who wants a small number of understandable rules: put projects in workspaces, group a task’s pages in a Tab Island, and switch to vertical tabs if labels are getting truncated. It is a low-setup approach to a crowded tab bar.

Vivaldi: stacks, tiling, workspaces, and sessions
Vivaldi adds more layers. Workspaces can separate contexts, tab stacks can keep related pages together, and tab tiling can show several pages at once. Session management lets you preserve a set of tabs for later, which is useful for a project that is paused and resumed rather than kept open indefinitely.
The result is more powerful but also more personal. One person may use workspaces as broad projects and stacks as individual tasks; another may use sessions as the main boundary between projects. Vivaldi does not force one method, so you need to choose a structure that you will actually maintain.
Which tab approach should you pick?
- Pick Opera when you want visible organization with little experimentation: Workspaces, Tab Islands, and vertical tabs cover the common cases.
- Pick Vivaldi when tab organization is part of your work method and you want stacks, tiling, sessions, and detailed behavior settings available together.
- Do not choose on the word “workspace” alone. Both browsers use workspaces; the difference is how many additional layers you want around them.
Privacy, ad blocking, and VPN controls
Both products document privacy features built into the browser, but the services and controls are not identical.
Vivaldi’s approach
Vivaldi documents ad blocking and tracker blocking, and its privacy help explains that Proton VPN is integrated into the browser. Activation can require a Vivaldi account, and additional Proton features may require a paid upgrade. The free browser installation and any separate paid VPN features should therefore be treated as different parts of the offering.
Vivaldi’s homepage describes its position this way: “Privacy isn’t just a feature at Vivaldi, it’s a philosophy.” That is company positioning, not proof that every configuration is safer than every alternative. You still need to review permissions, extensions, account settings, and the terms and logging policy of any VPN service you use.

Opera’s approach
Opera’s help pages document a built-in ad blocker and its own VPN controls. The appeal is convenience: the controls are part of the browser you are already using rather than a separate extension or application that you must discover and maintain.
A browser VPN should not be treated as a universal answer to privacy. Before relying on one, check which traffic it covers, the service’s jurisdiction and logging policy, and whether the plan terms match your use. The available evidence does not establish that Opera is always safer than Vivaldi, or vice versa.

What the evidence can and cannot establish
It is reasonable to say that both browsers provide built-in blocking and VPN-related features. It is not reasonable to declare a universal privacy winner from those labels alone. Blocking behavior can change with filter lists and settings, while VPN protection depends on the service configuration and your account. For a fair comparison, inspect the current controls in the release you install rather than assuming a feature name describes every detail.
Syncing tabs, passwords, and settings
Both browsers provide synchronization, but their documented encryption choices differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVivaldi sync
Vivaldi documents secure, end-to-end encrypted sync. That gives the strongest stated protection in this comparison for data sent through its synchronization system, provided you configure the account and encryption options correctly.
Opera sync
Opera documents an option to encrypt synchronized data with a passphrase you choose. A user-selected passphrase adds a control that is separate from the account password, so store it safely: losing it can affect your ability to decrypt synchronized data.
What to verify before switching devices
The exact categories available for synchronization—and whether a particular category is supported on your desktop and mobile combination—can change with releases and account settings. Before wiping the old browser, open the current sync settings in both products and confirm that the items you need, such as bookmarks, open tabs, history, or passwords, are listed as enabled. Keep a local export or other recovery method for critical data.
Importing your existing browser setup
Opera has explicit import documentation for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Yandex, and bookmarks saved as an HTML file. That makes it the more straightforward starting point when you want to move an established bookmark collection into a new browser.
- Identify the source browser or locate the exported HTML bookmarks file.
- Use Opera’s import function and select the source listed by the help documentation.
- Review the imported bookmarks and folders before deleting anything from the old browser.
- Turn on synchronization only after confirming that the local import is complete and correctly organized.
Vivaldi can still be configured as a replacement browser, but the material available for this comparison does not provide an equivalent, explicit list of supported import sources. If importing is your first priority, Opera has the clearer documented path.

How easy are they to customize?
“Easy” depends on whether you mean quick to understand or easy to make exactly your own.
| Customization question | Opera | Vivaldi |
|---|---|---|
| Can I organize projects quickly? | Yes, with Workspaces, Tab Islands, and the sidebar. | Yes, with workspaces plus additional tab and session choices. |
| Can I change the browser’s visual identity? | Offers practical, curated customization. | Documents custom colors and wallpapers alongside broader interface controls. |
| Can I keep notes beside web pages? | The documented feature set emphasizes the sidebar and integrated services. | Notes are documented as a sidebar feature. |
| Can I preserve a complex tab arrangement? | Workspaces and Tab Islands organize active work. | Sessions, stacks, tiling, and workspaces provide more ways to preserve and revisit it. |
| Will I need to learn many settings? | Usually fewer decisions are exposed at first. | More control means a steeper initial learning curve. |
Choose Opera when the browser should guide you toward a sensible arrangement. Choose Vivaldi when you are willing to spend time tuning the arrangement and want the option to keep refining it.
Website and extension compatibility
Opera and Vivaldi are Chromium-based. That gives both broadly similar compatibility with current websites and the large Chromium extension ecosystem. A site that works in one will often work in the other, although individual extensions can behave differently when they interact with browser-specific sidebars, tab systems, blocking settings, or permissions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compatibility alone therefore should not decide between them. Check the extensions you rely on, especially those that manage tabs, passwords, downloads, or page blocking, and test them in a small profile before moving your entire workflow.
Speed, memory, battery, and safety: what is not proven here
There is no current controlled test in the available material proving that either browser is universally faster, lighter, better for battery life, or superior for extension performance. Those outcomes vary with hardware, operating system, number of tabs, media playback, extensions, blocking lists, and background services.
The same caution applies to broad claims such as “safer.” Both browsers document privacy-related tools, but safety also depends on update behavior, account security, extension permissions, the sites you visit, and how you configure blocking and synchronization. Treat feature presence as a capability to configure, not as a guarantee.
A practical decision framework
Choose Vivaldi when these statements sound like you
- You want to move toolbars, panels, and other interface elements instead of accepting a fixed layout.
- You routinely work with many related pages and want stacks, tiling, workspaces, and saved sessions available together.
- You keep research notes beside pages and want themes, colors, and wallpapers to identify contexts.
- You prefer documented end-to-end encrypted sync and are comfortable reviewing account and encryption settings.
- You would rather learn a deeper settings system once than compromise on how the browser behaves.
Choose Opera when these statements sound like you
- You want useful organization immediately, with a sidebar that makes workspaces and integrated services easy to find.
- You prefer Tab Islands and vertical tabs as a straightforward way to reduce tab-bar clutter.
- You want built-in ad blocking and VPN controls presented as convenient browser features.
- You are moving from Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Yandex, or an HTML bookmarks export and want explicit import guidance.
- You value a curated first-run experience more than the ability to redesign every part of the interface.
Suggested setup paths
A Vivaldi setup for a project-heavy workflow
- Start with one workspace for each major context, such as personal, study, and work.
- Use tab stacks for pages belonging to the same task and tab tiling when you need to compare pages simultaneously.
- Add notes to the sidebar for decisions, citations, or reminders tied to the pages you are reading.
- Choose colors or wallpapers that make workspaces visually distinct.
- Save a session when a project should be closed and reopened later without keeping every page active.
- Review ad and tracker blocking, Proton VPN activation, and sync encryption before signing in on another device.
An Opera setup for quick organization
- Import bookmarks from the supported source browser or an HTML file.
- Create Workspaces for the contexts you switch between most often.
- Group task-related pages into Tab Islands and pin pages that must remain available.
- Try vertical tabs if long page titles are difficult to scan in the horizontal strip.
- Use the sidebar for the services and messaging tools you genuinely need; hide or reduce distractions you will not use.
- Review ad-blocking, VPN, and synchronization settings, including the optional passphrase for encrypted sync data.
Bottom line for most readers
There is no single winner because Opera and Vivaldi optimize for different kinds of customization. Vivaldi is the better choice for maximum control over layout, tabs, panels, notes, themes, commands, and saved workflows. Opera is the better choice for a guided, convenient experience built around a sidebar, workspaces, Tab Islands, vertical tabs, integrated services, ad blocking, and VPN controls.
