If Opera became sluggish or started consuming noticeably more memory after a refresh, work through these checks in order: confirm the update completed and relaunch Opera, identify a heavy tab or extension, close unused work and clear temporary data, test hardware acceleration, then use Update & Recovery’s keep-data reset if necessary. There is no authoritative current figure for how much RAM an Opera refresh should add, so judge each change against the same tabs and workload on your computer rather than a promised percentage improvement.
Why Opera can feel slower after a refresh
A browser refresh can change internal code, reset a setting, or expose a conflict with an extension, graphics driver, website, or profile data. The refresh itself is not proof that Opera is defective, and the same update can behave differently on two computers. Opera says that the browser automatically downloads an update when one becomes available, so an update may have been installed before you noticed the slowdown. You can confirm the installed version and complete any pending restart before diagnosing anything else.

High memory use is also workload-dependent. Each open tab, active web application, media stream, extension, and background process can reserve memory. A single page or add-on may account for most of the increase, while many ordinary tabs can produce a gradual rise. The practical goal is to find the component that changed, not to chase a universal RAM number that has not been established for current Opera releases.
Use this order of operations

1. Confirm the update and restart Opera
Check the version and update state
- Open Opera’s menu with the O Menu.
- Choose Update & Recovery.
- Select Check for Update.
- Let Opera finish downloading and installing any available update.
- When Opera asks to relaunch, accept the prompt. If no prompt appears, close every Opera window and start the browser again.
Opera’s documentation states, “Your Opera browser will automatically download an update when one becomes available.” The update page also shows the Opera version. Record that version before comparing performance, because a behavior change is meaningful only when you know which build is running. Test after the relaunch
Reopen only the tabs you need and repeat the action that felt slow: scrolling the same page, playing the same video, or switching among the same web apps. A restart can remove processes left over from an update, but it will not cure a consistently heavy extension or a page that simply needs substantial memory. If the problem returns with the same workload, continue to the resource check rather than repeatedly restarting.
2. Find a high-resource tab or extension
Check which work is expensive
Open Opera’s task-management view, where it is available, and look for a tab, page, or extension that is consuming disproportionate CPU or memory. Compare entries while the browser is slow, not after closing everything. A video editor, meeting site, streaming page, dashboard, or document with many live elements can legitimately use more resources than a static page. If one entry rises sharply while the rest remain ordinary, close that tab and test again. Opera’s help and extension controls are documented in its FAQ.
Disable extensions without removing them
- Open the extensions manager from the extensions icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+E on Windows or Linux.
- On macOS, press Command+Shift+E.
- Find an extension installed or updated around the time the slowdown began.
- Use its Disable control.
- Relaunch Opera if the extension affects browser startup or pages, then repeat the same workload.
Disabling is safer for diagnosis than uninstalling because it preserves the add-on and its configuration. If Opera stabilizes, re-enable extensions one at a time, testing the same tabs after each change. This one-at-a-time process isolates a suspect; it does not mean every extension causes high memory use. Leave the extension disabled, update it, or contact its developer if the slowdown returns immediately after re-enabling it.

Separate a tab problem from an extension problem
- Only one site is slow: close that tab and reopen it without other work. The site, its scripts, or its stored data may be responsible.
- Every site is slow until one add-on is disabled: keep that extension off while checking for an update or replacement.
- Opera is slow even with extensions disabled and a minimal tab set: proceed to cache, graphics acceleration, and recovery checks.
3. Reduce active work and clear temporary data
Close unused tabs and remove add-ons you no longer use
Close tabs that are not part of the current task, especially pages with video, live feeds, collaboration tools, or continuously updating dashboards. Save links or use bookmarks before closing anything you still need. Remove extensions that have no current purpose; each one can add background listeners, page scripts, or startup work. Opera’s speed guidance specifically recommends closing unused tabs, removing unused extensions, clearing browsing data, and keeping the browser current (Opera FAQ).
Clear cached images and files first
- Open Opera’s settings and go to the privacy or browsing-data controls.
- Choose the option to clear browsing data.
- Select a time range appropriate to the problem; use a recent range first if you want to minimize disruption.
- Select Cached images and files.
- Clear the data, restart Opera, and test the same workload.
Cache files are temporary copies of website resources. Emptying them can remove stale data and free local disk space, but the first visit to a site afterward may take longer while resources download again. Clearing cache does not provide a guaranteed memory reduction; it is a low-risk way to eliminate damaged or obsolete temporary files.
Understand the difference between cache, cookies, and hosted-app data
Do not select every data category automatically. Cookies and ordinary site data can remove sign-ins, preferences, shopping carts, and other site state. Hosted-app data can reset data belonging to installed extensions. Opera explains these consequences in its privacy guidance at Opera’s be safe and private documentation.

- Start with cached images and files when the goal is to remove temporary browser data with minimal account disruption.
- Clear cookies or site data only when you accept signing in again and rebuilding site preferences.
- Clear hosted-app data only when you are prepared for extension or web-app data to reset; export or back up any information an extension stores locally first.
After clearing data, sign in only to the sites needed for the test. Reopen tabs gradually so you can tell whether the slowdown follows a particular site or returns as general background work accumulates.
4. Test Opera’s graphics acceleration setting
Toggle the setting and compare the same workload
- Open Settings.
- Go to Browser > System.
- Locate Use graphics acceleration when available.
- Note its current state, then switch it to the opposite state.
- Restart Opera.
- Repeat the same scrolling, video, and tab-switching test you used before.
Opera’s FAQ recommends trying both enabled and disabled states; it does not establish a universal best setting. A compatible graphics driver can make acceleration smoother and reduce CPU work, while a driver or GPU path that conflicts with a page can cause stutter, visual glitches, crashes, or excess resource use. Keep the state that gives your computer the most stable scrolling and video playback with the lower resource use. If neither state helps, restore the setting you prefer and continue to recovery rather than toggling it repeatedly.
What to record during the comparison
- Whether scrolling is smooth or visibly jerky.
- Whether video playback drops frames, freezes, or shows artifacts.
- Whether switching tabs causes a delay.
- Whether Opera’s memory or CPU rises quickly under the same tabs.
- Whether the problem appears only on a particular monitor, video site, or graphics-heavy page.
These observations distinguish a rendering-path issue from a tab or extension issue. They are also useful if you later need help from Opera or your graphics-driver provider.

5. Use Update & Recovery when basic checks fail
Run the keep-data recovery option
- Open the O Menu on Windows or Linux. On macOS, use the Opera menu.
- Choose Update & Recovery.
- Select Recover.
- Choose Keep my data and only reset Opera settings.
- Review the confirmation and start recovery.
- Relaunch Opera and test before restoring extensions or changing many settings.
According to Opera’s recovery instructions, this option resets settings, disables extensions, and clears temporary data while retaining bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. It is therefore a stronger diagnostic step than clearing cache alone, but it is not a complete profile wipe. Custom search settings, startup behavior, appearance choices, permissions, and other preferences may need to be configured again. Keep a record of essential settings before starting.
Rebuild gradually after recovery
Run Opera with its reset settings and a small number of tabs first. If performance is normal, restore extensions one at a time and test after each addition. Reapply settings in groups only after the browser remains stable. This preserves the diagnostic value of recovery; restoring everything at once can immediately reintroduce the conflict without showing which change caused it.

When a reinstall is justified
Consider reinstalling only after the update check, extension isolation, data cleanup, acceleration test, and keep-data recovery have failed. Before uninstalling, verify that bookmarks, saved passwords, and any extension-specific data are available through the accounts or export features you rely on. A reinstall can replace damaged program files, but it cannot fix a problematic website, graphics driver, or extension that is restored afterward. Follow the official recovery guidance at Opera Help and preserve profile data you need before removing the application.

Measure each change without creating a new problem
Use a controlled comparison: note the Opera version, close unrelated programs, open the same set of tabs, and perform the same actions for several minutes. Change one variable at a time. Record whether the delay is at startup, page loading, scrolling, video playback, tab switching, or shutdown, and whether memory keeps climbing or settles after pages finish loading. A browser can legitimately use more memory while several complex web apps are active; the useful warning sign is a repeatable slowdown tied to a particular component or state.
Avoid stacking disruptive changes. Clearing cookies, disabling every extension, changing acceleration, and resetting Opera simultaneously may make the browser appear different but leaves no way to identify the cause. The staged sequence above moves from reversible, targeted actions to broader recovery while preserving the information each test reveals.
