Opera GX is the better choice if you play PC games while keeping a browser open and want explicit controls over CPU, memory, and bandwidth. Standard Opera is the better fit for general browsing, study, and office work because its main differentiators are workspaces, Flow sharing, and a less gaming-oriented interface. Both include Opera’s built-in ad blocker and VPN tools, so neither is automatically faster or more private for every user.

Opera GX vs. Opera at a glance

The two browsers overlap on everyday browsing features, but they are designed around different priorities. Opera GX puts resource controls and gaming customization in the foreground. Opera emphasizes organizing many browsing contexts and moving links or files between devices.

Decision factor Opera GX Opera
Primary audience Gamers and power users who need browser resource controls General users, students, and professionals who want an organized everyday browser
CPU and RAM controls CPU and RAM limiters are core GX Control features Not the defining focus of the standard browser
Bandwidth control Network Limiter lets you control the browser’s bandwidth use Not highlighted as a standard Opera differentiator
Gaming extras Gaming themes, sounds, mods, Hot Tabs Killer, and GX Cleaner Less gaming-oriented presentation
Organization Includes shared Opera browsing functions, with gaming additions Workspaces and Flow are central productivity features
Media tools Includes Opera’s shared browsing functions Music Player and Video Skip are documented integrated media features
Ad blocking and VPN Built-in ad and tracker blocking and VPN tools; Opera describes the VPN as zero-log Built-in ad blocker and VPN tools
Independent speed winner Not established by a controlled, current head-to-head benchmark

Choose GX when controlling contention with a game matters more than keeping the browser visually conventional. Choose Opera when your main problem is managing research, work, and communication tabs rather than limiting browser resources.

What Opera is

Opera is Opera Software’s general-purpose browser. Its comparison material presents workspaces and Flow as major reasons to choose it over the gaming edition. These features address organization: workspaces separate groups of tabs by context, while Flow is intended for sharing links and files across devices.

Workspaces for separate contexts

Workspaces let you group tabs according to what you are doing, such as a project, personal browsing, or research. Instead of maintaining one long, mixed tab strip, you can keep each context in its own group and switch between them. This is useful when the browser is your main work surface and you routinely move between unrelated tasks.

Flow for links and files

Flow is Opera’s cross-device sharing feature. It is aimed at sending a link or file from one device to another without relying on an email draft or a separate messaging app. If your workflow involves collecting material on a phone and continuing on a computer, this can be more useful than gaming-specific controls.

Integrated media features

Opera Help documents a Music Player and Video Skip. These tools keep supported media controls inside the browser rather than requiring you to change windows whenever playback or an advertisement interrupts a video. Their value is convenience; they do not turn Opera into a dedicated media application.

What Opera GX adds

Opera GX is Opera Software’s gaming-focused browser. Its defining feature is GX Control, which provides CPU and RAM limiters and a Network Limiter. Opera’s May 15, 2025 newsroom update also lists Hot Tabs Killer and GX Cleaner among the browser’s gaming-oriented tools.

GX Control

GX Control is intended for situations in which a game and a browser compete for the same computer resources. You can set limits for the browser instead of allowing open tabs, media, and web applications to use resources without a ceiling. The controls are optional; installing GX does not mean you must cap every session.

CPU Limiter

The CPU limiter constrains how much processor capacity the browser may use. This can be useful when a game is sensitive to background activity or when a browser tab runs a demanding web application. A lower browser ceiling can also make pages or background tasks complete more slowly. The limiter is therefore a trade-off, not a guarantee of higher frame rates.

RAM Limiter

The RAM limiter places a cap on the memory available to GX. It can prevent a collection of tabs from expanding indefinitely while you play, but it does not prove that GX uses less memory at baseline than Opera. A cap may cause tabs to reload or become less responsive when the browser reaches it. No controlled benchmark has established that GX consistently consumes less RAM than standard Opera.

Network Limiter

The Network Limiter controls how much bandwidth the browser can use. This matters when a game is downloading an update, a voice chat is active, or several people share a connection. Restricting browser traffic can leave more capacity for another application, but it can also make large downloads, streaming, and cloud pages slower.

Hot Tabs Killer and GX Cleaner

Hot Tabs Killer is listed as a way to identify tabs that are using substantial resources so you can close them. GX Cleaner is another GX utility named in Opera’s May 15, 2025 newsroom update. These tools are most useful when you want to find a specific source of browser load rather than close the entire browser.

Is Opera GX better for gaming?

It is better for gaming when the browser itself needs to be managed during play. The CPU, RAM, and network controls give you explicit levers that standard Opera does not present as its main selling point. They are particularly relevant if you keep streams, guides, chat, or web-based tools open beside a game.

That does not establish a universal gaming-performance advantage. Opera’s official descriptions explain what the controls do, but they do not supply a controlled test across games, graphics settings, hardware, and tab loads. Your frame rate, latency, and stutter can still be limited by the game, drivers, operating system, network, or another background process.

When GX’s controls are useful

  • You keep many tabs open while playing and want a defined browser resource ceiling.
  • A browser download or stream competes with a game for network capacity.
  • You need to locate and close unusually heavy tabs quickly.
  • You like a gaming-themed interface and want sounds, themes, or mods as part of the browser experience.

When GX may be unnecessary

  • You close the browser before launching games.
  • Your computer has ample resources and browser contention is not a problem.
  • You prefer a restrained interface and do not want gaming sounds or visual customization.
  • Your main challenge is organizing work and research rather than controlling resource use.

Does Opera GX use less RAM than Opera?

Not necessarily. GX provides a RAM limiter, which lets you impose a maximum on browser memory use. A limiter is a control policy, not evidence that the browser always has a lower memory footprint under identical conditions.

Actual memory use varies with the number and type of tabs, extensions, media playback, web applications, and browser settings. A tab-heavy session with video and interactive pages can behave differently from a session containing mostly static documents. When GX reaches its chosen limit, the practical result may be slower pages or tab reloads rather than a faster browser.

A practical way to compare memory use

  1. Use the same computer, operating-system session, extensions, and set of websites in both browsers.
  2. Start each browser with no unrelated tabs or downloads running.
  3. Open the same pages and allow dynamic content to finish loading before recording observations.
  4. Repeat the comparison with the GX RAM limiter disabled and then with a defined cap; record whether tabs reload or become less responsive.
  5. Treat the result as a test of your workload, not a universal claim about every user or game.

No current independent benchmark establishes a general RAM winner.

Productivity and everyday browsing

Standard Opera has the clearer productivity focus because workspaces and Flow directly address organization and handoff between devices. GX includes many shared Opera browsing functions, but its additional controls and gaming presentation may be irrelevant if your browser is primarily a work tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Opera for organized multitasking

Use Opera when you regularly separate tab collections by project, class, client, or personal activity. Workspaces reduce the need to search through one crowded tab strip, while Flow gives you a dedicated route for moving links and files between devices.

Choose GX for a mixed game-and-browser desk

GX can still handle ordinary research, email, documents, and media. Its advantage appears when those tasks remain open while a game runs, because you can limit the browser rather than relying on manual tab closing. The cost is a more overtly gaming-oriented interface that some users may find distracting.

Media playback

Opera’s integrated Music Player and Video Skip are documented browser features. They can reduce window switching during routine browsing, but no independent test establishes that one edition delivers better audio or video quality than the other.

Privacy, ad blocking, and VPN tools

Both Opera and Opera GX include an ad blocker and VPN tools. Opera Help says its ad blocking can also block the source of many tracking cookies. That can reduce some advertising and tracking requests, but a built-in blocker is not the same as complete anonymity or protection against every form of tracking.

Opera’s product statements about GX describe ad and tracker blockers, a zero-log VPN, and GDPR compliance. Those are vendor claims. Opera does not cite an independent privacy audit result, so they should not be presented as independently verified findings.

What these tools can and cannot tell you

  • Ad and tracker blocking can reduce unwanted requests and advertising on supported pages.
  • A VPN changes how traffic is routed, but it does not make every online activity anonymous.
  • Blocking tracking cookies does not eliminate fingerprinting, account-based identification, or tracking performed through services you choose to use.
  • Privacy settings, permissions, extensions, and the sites you visit still affect your exposure.

Because both editions provide the core tools, privacy alone is not a decisive reason to select GX over Opera. Select based on whether you need GX’s resource controls and interface.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Gaming themes, sounds, and customization

GX adds gaming themes, sounds, and mods. For some users, these are meaningful customization options that make the browser feel like part of a gaming setup. For others, they add visual noise to a tool used for writing, spreadsheets, research, or communication.

This is a preference decision rather than a performance specification. A themed interface does not demonstrate faster page rendering, and a conventional interface does not demonstrate lower resource use. Consider whether you want the browser to reflect a gaming identity every day or only need a few controls during play.

Linux availability and platform qualification

Opera GX’s March 19, 2026 Linux announcement said native packages supported Debian-, Ubuntu-, Fedora-, and openSUSE-based distributions, with both .deb and RPM formats. The same announcement said Flatpak support was still in development at that time.

Linux detail Status in the March 19, 2026 announcement
Debian and Ubuntu family Native .deb packages announced
Fedora family RPM packages announced
openSUSE-based distributions RPM packages announced
Flatpak Still in development at the time of the announcement

This is a dated availability statement, not a promise that packaging or support will remain unchanged. Check the current download and system-support information for your distribution before installing.

How to decide between Opera GX and Opera

Pick Opera GX if these statements describe you

  • You play games with the browser open and want CPU, RAM, or network limits you can adjust explicitly.
  • You often need to identify a heavy tab instead of closing every tab.
  • You want gaming themes, sounds, or mods.
  • You accept that a resource cap can make browser pages slower or cause tabs to reload.

Pick Opera if these statements describe you

  • You mainly browse, study, write, shop, communicate, or work in web applications.
  • You want workspaces to separate groups of tabs by context.
  • You frequently send links or files between devices with Flow.
  • You prefer a conventional presentation without gaming-focused customization.

Choose based on the computer you actually use

On a constrained computer, GX’s controls may be useful because they let you prioritize another application. On a high-resource computer where the browser does not interfere with games, the controls may provide little practical benefit. Conversely, a powerful work machine can still benefit from Opera’s organization features if the limiting factor is attention rather than hardware.

A simple side-by-side trial

If you are undecided, compare both browsers against the same tasks instead of relying on a general speed claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. List the pages and applications you normally keep open during a game or work session.
  2. In Opera GX, open GX Control and test CPU, RAM, and network limits one at a time so you can see which setting changes your session.
  3. Note any tab reloads, delayed page updates, buffering, or download slowdowns after applying a limit.
  4. In Opera, recreate the same tab groups and observe whether Workspaces and Flow improve your organization.
  5. Use each browser for several normal sessions, including one gaming session if that is part of your use case.
  6. Decide from the problem you are solving: resource contention favors GX, while tab organization and device handoff favor Opera.

Keep the test tied to your own sites and hardware. A result from one collection of tabs cannot establish a universal winner, and no independent head-to-head benchmark is provided.

Final verdict

Opera GX is the better browser for gamers and power users who need visible CPU, RAM, and bandwidth controls, plus gaming-oriented customization. Opera is the better all-purpose choice for work and general browsing when Workspaces, Flow, media tools, and a calmer presentation matter more. Both provide built-in ad blocking and VPN tools, so the deciding factor is how you use the browser, not a blanket claim that one is always faster or more private.
