OpenVPN 2.6.0, released on 25 January 2023, removed the limit on connection and remote entries and added management commands for enumerating and retrieving remote entries. For administrators managing endpoint lists through OpenVPN’s management interface, that means the entries can be counted and queried directly. It is an entry-capacity and management change—not a new VPN protocol or a change to what the remote directive means.
What remote-entry support changes
The OpenVPN Community Project’s 2.6.0 release notes say the software supports an unlimited number of connection entries and remote entries. The change record also adds two management commands: remote-entry-count, which returns the number of remote entries, and remote-entry-get, which retrieves an entry. OpenVPN 2.6 Changes

In practical terms, management-interface clients and administrators can enumerate and inspect remote entries rather than being constrained by the earlier entry limit. The release notes establish capacity and access through these commands; they do not claim that the feature makes connections faster, improves security, or changes how OpenVPN selects an endpoint.

- Data Channel Offload (DCO): Support was added for Windows, Linux, and FreeBSD. On Windows, DCO is used by default for client connections only when the configuration is compatible; compression is one example of a setting that can prevent its use.
- OpenSSL 3: Support was added, and OpenSSL 3 became the default on Windows.
- Tunnel MTU: Handling was improved, including support for a pushable MTU.
- Cryptographic defaults: Outdated algorithms were disabled by default, with override options available.
- TLS handshake: The handshake was reworked. The project says this makes OpenVPN “immune to replay-packet state exhaustion attacks”; that is the project’s release-note characterization, not an independently reported test result.
- Peer fingerprints: A
--peer-fingerprintmode was added. - Protocol negotiation: Negotiation was improved.
- Windows additions: The release added GUI Pre-Logon Access Provider support and updated the easy-rsa3 bundle in the Windows installer.
Release date and version context
OpenVPN 2.6.0 was released on 25 January 2023, according to the project’s release history. It is a historical release, so readers should check the project’s release information for the version appropriate to a new installation rather than assume 2.6.0 is the current stable release.
