OpenTimelineIO (OTIO) became the Academy Software Foundation’s (ASWF) fifth hosted project on July 29, 2019. The move placed Pixar’s open-source editorial-timeline API and interchange format under a shared industry foundation for governance, infrastructure and collaboration. OTIO is not an editing application; it carries the structure and metadata of a timeline between production tools.
What was announced on July 29, 2019?
The Academy Software Foundation’s Technical Advisory Council accepted OTIO as the Foundation’s fifth hosted project, according to the 2019 announcement from the Linux Foundation and Academy Software Foundation. Pixar had originally created the project.

The announcement said the Foundation would maintain and further develop OTIO under the oversight of a technical steering committee. It also described newly accepted projects as beginning in incubation while they worked toward the Foundation’s adoption standards. That was OTIO’s stated stage in 2019; the current sources available here do not establish a later formal maturity stage.

What OpenTimelineIO is used for
OTIO represents editorial timeline information as “picture-less” data. Its API and interchange format can describe clips, timing, tracks, transitions, markers and metadata, allowing other applications to read and modify the relationships in a cut without embedding the video itself.
#1 Best Overall
Typical workflow uses
- Track changes in shot length as an edit develops.
- Provide editorial context for shots in dailies.
- Communicate shots that were added, removed or rearranged.
- Conform new renders into an existing cut.
- Represent picture-in-picture and other layered timeline structures.
The practical goal is interoperability: a timeline’s structure can move between editorial, production and post-production tools instead of being trapped in a proprietary exchange format. OTIO does not replace a nonlinear editor, compositing package or media server, and it does not carry the picture itself.
Why hosting by ASWF mattered
Moving OTIO into ASWF gave the project a neutral, shared home rather than leaving its direction tied to one originating company. ASWF’s mission is to increase contributions to open-source content-creation software, coordinate work across projects, provide common build and test infrastructure, and offer a clear path for participation. The Foundation also welcomes technical and non-technical contributors, as described on its official site.
For studios and vendors, that arrangement can make an interchange project easier to evaluate: code, decisions and contribution rules are managed in a public project context, while the Foundation supplies cross-industry coordination. It does not guarantee that every application supports every OTIO feature. Teams still need to verify timeline coverage, metadata preservation and integration behavior in the specific tools they use.

How OTIO is governed
OTIO’s current Project Roles and Responsibilities document defines three principal roles:
Contributors
Anyone may contribute subject to the project’s legal and contribution requirements. Contributors are expected to follow coding standards, sign the applicable individual or corporate Contributor License Agreement, and submit changes with Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO) sign-off.
Committers
Committers review and approve code for inclusion. This role provides the project’s working gate for accepting changes into the codebase.
Rank #3
Technical Steering Committee
The Technical Steering Committee sets high-level project direction. That separation lets a broad contributor community propose improvements while an accountable group maintains technical coherence.
What is confirmed about OTIO in 2026?
Two dated ASWF records show that OTIO remained represented and visible in Foundation activities in 2026, without proving a particular maturity level or implementation outcome.
Technical Advisory Council representation
The May 27, 2026 Technical Advisory Council meeting record lists Eric Reinecke as an OpenTimelineIO representative.
Open Source Forum program visibility
ASWF’s February 12, 2026 Open Source Forum announcement listed “How OpenTimelineIO Enables AI-Native Creative Workflows,” presented by Buzz Hays of Google.
Those records establish continuing representation and program attention. They should not be read as evidence that OTIO graduated from incubation, that a specific AI workflow has been delivered, or that all participating tools implement the format in the same way.

The 2019 announcement reported that OTIO had been used in production for Coco, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4, and that Pixar, Lucasfilm and Netflix had contributed to the project. These are claims made in that announcement and describe activity known at the time; they are not a current adoption tally.
Best Value
Guido Quaroni, Pixar’s vice president of research and development, said in the 2019 release: “Picture-less data produced by editorial departments is very useful across the pipeline. We developed OpenTimelineIO to provide an open source alternative to proprietary formats and enable our community to easily and efficiently interchange editorial timelines.”
David Morin, then executive director of the Academy Software Foundation, said in the same release that OTIO was “quickly becoming a part of an industry standard editorial pipeline” across animation studios, visual-effects studios and third-party vendors. That is an attributed 2019 assessment, not an independently measured present-day market-share claim.
What joining ASWF means for a production team
- For editorial and post teams: OTIO offers a common way to exchange timeline structure, but each integration must be checked for supported effects, transitions and metadata.
- For studios: ASWF provides a venue for cross-company coordination and shared infrastructure around an open project.
- For developers: The governance document explains how to contribute code and how technical decisions are organized.
- For decision-makers: The 2019 hosting milestone demonstrates institutional backing, while the 2026 records confirm ongoing visibility rather than a guaranteed feature set or maturity designation.
The bottom line
OpenTimelineIO’s ASWF entry was a governance and collaboration milestone: on July 29, 2019, an open format created by Pixar became the Foundation’s fifth hosted project. Its purpose remains the exchange of editorial timeline data—clips, timing, tracks, transitions, markers and metadata—across a production pipeline. Current governance documentation and 2026 ASWF records show an active project presence, but they do not establish OTIO’s formal maturity stage or universal support across software.
