There is no universal winner. OpenCode is the better starting point when you want an inspectable, open-source agent harness and freedom to choose model and provider routes. Claude Code is the better fit when you want Anthropic’s first-party Claude coding workflow across its supported terminal, IDE, desktop, and browser surfaces. The practical choice depends less on a product label than on five details: the agent harness, exact model, provider account, execution runtime, and effective permission and data settings.
This is a source-based comparison, not a controlled coding benchmark. It does not establish that either tool writes better code, works faster, succeeds more often, or uses fewer tokens. Use the decision process below to match each tool to your repository, governance requirements, and daily workflow.

OpenCode and Claude Code at a glance
| Decision area | OpenCode | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Agent harness | Open-source coding agent whose implementation can be inspected and configured | Anthropic’s first-party agentic coding tool |
| Documented surfaces | Terminal interface, desktop app, and IDE extension | Terminal, IDE, desktop, and browser |
| Model and provider path | Configurable provider credentials and model selection; the available roster is dynamic | Claude models through an eligible Anthropic plan or supported API route |
| Authentication and billing | You supply credentials for the provider you select; inference can incur provider or local-compute costs | Depends on sign-in route: an Enterprise seat uses a plan usage pool, while API-key use is pay-as-you-go and billed per token to the relevant Console or cloud account |
| Primary control trade-off | More responsibility for provider choice, model compatibility, credentials, and updates | A more managed first-party path, with less freedom to swap the underlying service |
| Best initial fit | Teams prioritizing inspectability, routing control, or a mixed-provider setup | Teams prioritizing a supported Claude workflow and integrated product surfaces |

The four layers you must keep separate
Many “tool versus tool” comparisons accidentally change several variables at once. Treat the following as separate layers when you choose or test an assistant.

1. Agent harness
The harness is the application that gathers repository context, decides when to call tools, asks for approval, records the task state, and presents the interaction. OpenCode and Claude Code are different harnesses even when they invoke a model from the same model family.
2. Model
The model is the exact model ID and version generating plans, edits, explanations, and tool calls. A model name without its version or provider route is not a reproducible comparison. Model catalogs and aliases can change, so record the ID shown in your configuration when you evaluate a task.
3. Provider
The provider authenticates requests, meters usage, applies retention and routing terms, and sends inference to an endpoint. In OpenCode, you configure the credentials for the provider you choose. In Claude Code, your route may be an eligible product plan, an Anthropic API account, or a supported cloud API arrangement.
4. Runtime
The runtime is where files, shells, tests, browsers, and other tools execute. A local checkout, a remote development host, and a sandbox can produce different results even with identical prompts and models because they expose different files, network access, operating-system commands, and secrets.
For a fair evaluation, hold three layers constant while changing one. If you change harness, model, provider, prompt, permission preset, repository revision, and runtime together, the result cannot tell you which change mattered.
What OpenCode is
OpenCode presents itself as an open-source AI coding agent. Its documented delivery surfaces are a terminal interface, a desktop application, and an IDE extension. The getting-started guidance requires API keys for the language-model providers you select.

“Open-source” describes the agent software and its inspectability; it does not make inference universally free or automatically self-hosted. You still need a model route. That route can charge for tokens, require a cloud account, or require local hardware and the operational work of running a model yourself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When OpenCode’s design helps
- Provider choice: You can select among the providers and models supported by your configuration instead of being tied to one first-party route.
- Inspectability: The harness is open source, which lets a team examine its behavior and adapt its integration to internal tooling.
- Routing experiments: You can evaluate different model IDs or accounts while keeping the rest of a workflow stable.
- Surface flexibility: A terminal-first workflow can be extended with the documented desktop and IDE surfaces.
Responsibilities OpenCode adds
- Creating and protecting provider credentials.
- Checking that the chosen model ID is supported and compatible with the current release.
- Understanding which provider receives prompts, repository content, and tool results.
- Tracking provider billing, rate limits, retention terms, and changes to the available model roster.
- Updating the harness and validating configuration after updates.
What Claude Code is
Anthropic describes Claude Code as an agentic coding tool that reads codebases, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with development tools. Its documented surfaces include the terminal, IDE, desktop, and browser.
The first-party path can reduce the number of separate components you have to assemble: the coding agent, the Claude service, and the supported product surfaces are designed to work together. You still need to understand the selected account route, model availability, permissions, and runtime. A managed product surface is not a substitute for reviewing what the agent can read, execute, or modify.
When Claude Code’s design helps
- Consistent Claude workflow: You want Anthropic’s supported coding experience rather than a provider-agnostic harness.
- Choice of surfaces: Your team moves between terminal, IDE, desktop, and browser contexts.
- Centralized account path: You prefer usage to be associated with an eligible plan or a specific API or cloud account.
- Lower integration burden: You would rather follow a first-party setup than maintain a multi-provider configuration.
How model choice changes the comparison
“OpenCode versus Claude Code” is incomplete unless you name the model and route. OpenCode can be configured with different providers and models, and its official model list is dynamic. Treat the list as a point-in-time capability: verify the exact model ID, provider, and compatibility when you set up the tool.
Claude Code usage depends on how you sign in. Anthropic’s help guidance distinguishes an Enterprise seat, which draws from a plan usage pool, from API-key usage, which is pay-as-you-go and billed per token to the relevant Console or cloud account. Exact model names and availability can change, so record what your account actually offers rather than assuming that a model shown in an older guide is still available.

A reproducible model record
For every trial, record:
- Harness name and release you installed.
- Exact model ID and provider endpoint.
- Account or plan used for billing.
- Repository commit, language versions, and test command.
- Permission settings and whether network access was enabled.
- Runtime location and any mounted external directories.
- Prompt text, retry count, and human review time.
This record prevents a common mistake: crediting the harness for a result that actually came from a different model, account, or runtime.

Cost: compare the whole route, not a license label
OpenCode’s core software can have no license fee, but operating it still requires an inference route. A hosted provider may charge per token or under its own subscription; a local route may require hardware, storage, electricity, maintenance, and model downloads. The software’s license and the total cost of an active coding workflow are separate questions.
Claude Code can be used through an eligible plan or a supported API route. An Enterprise seat draws from the plan’s usage pool. API-key usage is pay-as-you-go and billed per token to the applicable Console or cloud account. The right figure depends on your account, model, task volume, retries, and review process; current plan pricing, included limits, and provider rates must be checked at the time you buy or deploy.
Build a realistic monthly estimate
- List the tasks you expect: bug fixes, new features, refactors, test generation, documentation, and code review.
- Estimate the number of agent turns per task, including failed attempts and retries.
- Measure the repository context each task sends and the output needed for edits and explanations.
- Add human review time, because a cheaper model can cost more if it produces changes that require extensive correction.
- Include local compute or hosted-runtime charges when the route is not covered by a plan.
- Run a small pilot and compare actual invoices or usage dashboards with your estimate.
Do not call OpenCode “free” merely because its harness is open source, and do not assume a Claude Code plan has unlimited use. Both descriptions hide the route that meters inference.

Both products expose permission or configuration controls, but similarly named settings do not guarantee the same effective behavior. Compare what the running agent can actually do in your runtime.
Permission checklist
- Files: Which repository paths can be read or changed? Are parent directories or external mounts visible?
- Shell: Can the agent run build, test, package, or deployment commands? Does each command require approval?
- Network: Can tools contact package registries, documentation sites, APIs, or arbitrary hosts?
- Secrets: Are environment variables, cloud credentials, SSH keys, or local configuration files exposed?
- Destructive actions: Can the agent delete files, reset a working tree, rewrite history, or alter infrastructure?
- Persistence: Where are transcripts, logs, caches, and generated artifacts stored?
Start with the narrowest permissions that let the task run. Expand access only when a specific build or test step requires it, and keep production credentials outside an interactive coding runtime whenever possible.
Claude Code through Bedrock or Vertex API keys
Anthropic’s FAQ describes a specific configuration in which Claude Code uses Bedrock or Vertex API keys with CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NONESSENTIAL_TRAFFIC set. In that configuration, model API requests go directly to the configured Bedrock or Vertex endpoints and only essential telemetry is sent.

That statement applies to the stated configuration; it is not a blanket privacy promise for every Claude Code route, account type, or setting. Review current data-flow documentation and the terms of the provider that will receive your requests. The same discipline applies to OpenCode: the selected provider, not the open-source label alone, determines the service contract and retention behavior.

Setting up an OpenCode workflow
- Choose the runtime. Decide whether the agent will run on your workstation, a development host, or another controlled environment. Confirm that the checkout and required toolchains are available there.
- Install the OpenCode surface you need. Select the terminal interface, desktop app, or IDE extension that matches how you work. Keep the installed version recorded for repeatable testing.
- Select a provider and model. Review the current provider/model list, choose an exact model ID, and verify compatibility before starting a task.
- Create credentials with the provider. Use a key or account intended for development automation, apply the provider’s spending and access limits, and avoid placing secrets in the repository.
- Configure permissions. Begin with repository-only file access and approval for shell or network actions. Add access only for a documented requirement.
- Run a harmless verification task. Ask the agent to inspect a small module and explain its tests without changing files. Confirm which model, account, and runtime handled the request.
- Test the full loop. Have it make a small change, run the project’s test command, show the diff, and stop for review before any destructive action.
Setting up a Claude Code workflow
- Choose the supported surface. Use the terminal, IDE, desktop, or browser experience that matches your team’s work. Verify that the selected surface has access to the repository and required development tools.
- Choose the sign-in route. Establish whether usage will come from an eligible plan, an Enterprise seat, an Anthropic API key, or a supported cloud API arrangement. The route determines billing and applicable terms.
- Confirm model availability. Record the model name and account that your organization can actually use; do not rely on a name copied from an old tutorial.
- Review effective permissions. Check file scope, command approvals, network access, external directories, secret exposure, and destructive operations in the chosen runtime.
- Run a read-only smoke test. Ask for a repository map or test explanation first. Confirm that the agent can see the intended files and cannot see data outside the approved scope.
- Approve a bounded edit. Use a small, reversible change, inspect the diff, run tests, and keep the first session separate from production credentials.
Which workflow should choose which tool?
Choose OpenCode first when control is the requirement
- Your organization needs an inspectable harness and wants to review or adapt the agent integration.
- You need to route different repositories or teams to different providers or model IDs.
- You already operate API credentials, budgets, and retention controls across several model services.
- You are comfortable owning compatibility checks and updates when provider catalogs change.
- Your developers prefer a terminal-centered workflow but also want desktop or IDE options.
Choose Claude Code first when a supported Claude path is the requirement
- Your team specifically wants Anthropic’s first-party coding workflow.
- Developers need to move among terminal, IDE, desktop, and browser surfaces with one product family.
- Your procurement or identity setup already supports an eligible plan, Enterprise seat, or Anthropic/cloud API account.
- You prefer a managed route over maintaining a provider-agnostic harness.
- You want a single product owner for the coding-agent experience, while still reviewing runtime permissions and provider terms.
Use a pilot when the requirements conflict
If one group values provider control and another values first-party support, run both tools on the same non-sensitive repository. Keep the model, prompt, runtime, permissions, and commit fixed wherever the products allow. Score the things your team actually pays for: accepted changes, test outcomes, review time, retries, setup effort, and policy compliance. Do not convert one successful demo into a general performance claim.
A fair evaluation plan
- Select representative tasks. Include a small bug, a cross-file feature, a refactor, a failing-test diagnosis, and documentation work from your own stack.
- Freeze the starting state. Use the same repository commit, language versions, dependency lockfile, and test commands.
- Define success before running. For example: tests pass, the diff follows project conventions, no unrelated files change, and a reviewer accepts the result.
- Keep the route visible. Record harness, model ID, provider, account, runtime, permissions, and network state for every attempt.
- Count total effort. Include setup, approvals, retries, waiting, review, and cleanup—not only the time until the first answer.
- Inspect data handling. Verify where prompts, source files, logs, and telemetry travel under each exact configuration.
- Repeat enough to expose variance. A single successful task is anecdotal. Repeat representative tasks and report the conditions rather than claiming a universal winner.
The available comparison material does not provide a firsthand code-quality, speed, success-rate, or token-efficiency benchmark. Any article or review that presents a numerical winner without a clearly attributable, controlled test should be treated cautiously.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating “Claude in OpenCode” as Claude Code
If OpenCode is configured to call a Claude model, OpenCode remains the harness. The provider and model govern inference, while OpenCode governs context gathering, tool use, and approvals. To compare harnesses, keep the model and route as similar as your accounts permit.
Mistake: comparing subscription price with API spend
An included plan allowance, a per-token API account, and local compute are different cost structures. Put them in one estimate with expected task volume, retries, and review time before deciding.
Mistake: assuming open source means self-managed privacy
The OpenCode license does not determine what a hosted provider retains or where requests are routed. Inspect the provider’s terms and the actual runtime configuration.
Best Value
Mistake: assuming a first-party product removes operational risk
Claude Code still runs with permissions, credentials, files, and commands. Check the effective runtime state rather than relying on a product-level assumption.
Mistake: granting broad access to make setup easier
Broad filesystem, network, or secret access can turn a coding session into an incident. Start with a disposable branch or workspace, narrow permissions, and approve elevated actions individually.
Mistake: relying on stale model names
Provider rosters, aliases, limits, and account eligibility change. Verify the current model ID and terms at setup and record them in your evaluation notes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line for different teams
For an individual developer who wants to experiment with routing and inspect the agent, OpenCode is the natural first candidate. For a team standardizing on Anthropic’s supported coding experience across several surfaces, Claude Code is the natural first candidate. For a regulated or cost-sensitive organization, neither label is enough: select the exact model and provider route, lock down runtime permissions, inspect data flow, and measure total work on representative repositories.
Make the decision at the workflow level. Name the harness, model, provider, runtime, permission profile, and billing route in your internal standard. That description remains meaningful even when model catalogs, product surfaces, or account terms change.
