OpenCode Go and Claude Code solve different parts of the coding-assistant problem. OpenCode Go is a low-cost provider and subscription tier inside OpenCode, where you can choose among a changing pool of models. Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal-native coding agent, with a tightly integrated Claude workflow, extensive command-line controls, and documented options for enterprise authentication and routing.

Choose OpenCode Go when model breadth, provider portability, and a predictable monthly entry price matter most. Choose Claude Code when you want a mature terminal workflow for understanding repositories, editing files, running commands, automating Git work, and connecting that workflow to Anthropic accounts, Bedrock, Vertex AI, or an LLM gateway. Neither product can be called universally smarter from the available vendor documentation: the documented differences are in model access, controls, deployment, and billing.

What OpenCode Go and Claude Code actually are

The most important distinction is architectural. OpenCode Go is not a separate coding editor or a competing terminal agent. It is a provider and subscription layer that runs inside OpenCode. OpenCode remains the interface, while the Go subscription supplies access to a curated lineup of models. OpenCode describes Go as optional: you can use other providers with OpenCode instead.

Question OpenCode Go Claude Code
What is it? A provider subscription used through OpenCode. A terminal-native coding agent from Anthropic.
Primary model strategy Multi-model access through a changing Go lineup. Anthropic-first access to Claude models, with documented enterprise routing options.
Pricing shape Published monthly tiers: Go at $10 and Go Plus at $40, with different usage limits. Cost depends on the Anthropic account, subscription, API route, or cloud route you select; no single universal monthly price applies.
Interface OpenCode’s interface, including its terminal user interface. Claude Code’s command-line interface, interactive REPL, and automation modes.
Provider portability High: Go is optional and OpenCode can use other providers. Lower in the native workflow because the experience is optimized for Claude, although enterprise routes can change the infrastructure behind it.
Enterprise routes The supplied Go documentation does not establish equivalent Bedrock, Vertex AI, or gateway patterns. Anthropic documents Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and LLM-gateway deployments.

OpenCode Go plans, limits, and model access

The two documented monthly tiers

OpenCode documents two Go subscriptions. Go costs $10 per month and Go Plus costs $40 per month. Both provide access to the Go model lineup, but their usage limits differ. The documentation does not establish a single token allowance or a universal request quota in the material available here, so do not treat the subscription price as an unlimited-use promise.

Plan Documented price Access Usage limits
Go $10 per month Access to the Go model lineup through OpenCode. Different from Go Plus; exact limit not stated here.
Go Plus $40 per month Access to the Go model lineup through OpenCode. Different from Go; exact limit not stated here.

These are subscription prices documented for 2026, not a guarantee that the price, limits, or included models will remain unchanged. Check the current Go plan page before subscribing, especially if your workload depends on sustained daily use or large repositories.

What models are available

The documented Go lineup includes models from Grok, GLM, GPT Luna, Kimi, LongCat, MiMo, MiniMax, Qwen, DeepSeek, Muse Spark, and other providers. OpenCode says the list can change as models are tested and added. The practical benefit is choice: you can try a different model for lower cost, lower latency, a longer context window, or a particular coding task without replacing the OpenCode interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lineup should be treated as a live catalog rather than a fixed specification. A model shown in one month may be renamed, removed, or joined by another model later. Exact token prices for individual models are also volatile and should be confirmed on the current Go page.

How to subscribe and connect Go

The documented setup takes place in OpenCode’s console and terminal user interface:

  1. Sign in to OpenCode Console.
  2. Subscribe to either Go or Go Plus.
  3. Copy the API key supplied after subscription.
  4. Start OpenCode’s terminal user interface and run /connect.
  5. Select OpenCode Go as the provider and enter the API key when prompted.
  6. Run /models to inspect the models currently available to your account.

Because the model catalog is dynamic, /models is the authoritative check for what your connected account can use at that moment. If a model you expected is absent, verify the subscription, reconnect the provider, and inspect the current catalog instead of relying on an older list.

Claude Code requirements, installation, and authentication

Supported environments and prerequisites

Anthropic documents Claude Code for macOS and Linux, and for Windows through Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). The documented prerequisite is Node.js 18 or newer, along with an internet connection for authentication and AI processing.

Windows Supported through WSL rather than a separately documented native Windows shell workflow.
Runtime Node.js 18 or newer.
Connectivity Internet access is required for authentication and AI processing.

Installation choices

Anthropic documents installation through npm, a local installer, or a native binary path described as alpha in the setup documentation. The alpha label matters: teams that need the most conservative deployment should choose a documented non-alpha path and standardize it across their machines.

After installation, run claude to open the interactive interface. Authentication can use Anthropic Console, a Claude Pro or Max subscription, Amazon Bedrock, or Google Vertex AI. The account or cloud route you choose affects billing, governance, and which organization controls the credentials.

Authentication and credential handling

Claude Code’s setup documentation states that it securely stores credentials. That does not remove the need for normal operational controls: use the account intended for the project, keep secrets out of shell history and source files, and decide whether personal subscriptions are acceptable for company code before connecting one.

Claude Code’s terminal and automation workflow

Interactive repository work

Run claude for an interactive REPL. This is the closest equivalent to a conversation-based coding session: you can ask Claude Code to explain an unfamiliar codebase, edit files, run tests or other commands, and iterate on the result. Anthropic’s documented examples include repository understanding, code changes, test execution, Git automation, and pull-request creation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One-shot and piped operation

Use print mode with claude -p when a prompt should run without an interactive session. Claude Code also accepts piped input, which makes it suitable for shell scripts and CI-style jobs that pass a file, command output, or generated prompt into the agent.

A one-shot invocation is useful for a bounded task such as reviewing a generated diff or returning a machine-readable summary. An interactive session is better when the task needs clarification, several edits, or human review between commands.

Sessions, continuation, and resumption

The CLI can continue the latest conversation and resume a session by ID. This lets you separate a long investigation from a later implementation step without losing the prior context, provided you retain the session identifier and use the same account and environment rules.

Controls for scripts and CI

Claude Code documents flags for model aliases or full model names, permission modes, allowed and disallowed tools, structured JSON or stream output, maximum turns, additional working directories, and verbose logs. Together, these controls let you narrow what an automated run can do and define how its output is consumed.

  • Model selection: choose an alias or specify a full model name rather than relying on an implicit default.
  • Permission modes: set how the agent asks for or receives approval before taking actions.
  • Tool allowlists and denylists: permit only the tools a job needs and block sensitive operations.
  • Structured output: request JSON or streaming output for downstream scripts.
  • Maximum turns: cap how long an unattended run can continue.
  • Additional working directories: give the agent access to more than the current directory when a task spans repositories or generated artifacts.
  • Verbose logs: expose more detail when diagnosing a failed or unexpectedly short run.

Claude Code also documents MCP configuration. MCP servers can extend the agent with external tools or data sources, but every added server expands the trust and permission surface. Add only servers your organization has approved, and test their behavior with the same permission restrictions used in production automation.

Model support: breadth versus integration

OpenCode Go’s multi-model approach

OpenCode Go is explicitly multi-model. One provider connection exposes a broad and changing set of third-party and open coding models. That is valuable when you want to compare response speed, context handling, cost, or coding style while keeping the surrounding OpenCode workflow stable.

The trade-off is catalog volatility. The available names, limits, and per-token prices can change, and the documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples quality ranking across the lineup. Use /models to see the current options and evaluate a model against your own repository and acceptance tests.

Claude Code’s Anthropic-first approach

Claude Code is designed around Anthropic’s Claude family. The CLI supports model selection with aliases or full model names, but model names should be checked against Anthropic’s current documentation: Anthropic maintains active, deprecated, and retired states and publishes recommended replacements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enterprise routing changes the infrastructure context rather than turning Claude Code into a general multi-provider switcher. Bedrock, Vertex AI, or an LLM gateway can determine where requests are authenticated, logged, metered, and billed, while the coding workflow remains Claude Code’s.

Why a “smarter” verdict would be misleading

Vendor documentation establishes supported models and workflows, not a controlled benchmark between OpenCode Go and Claude Code. Results will depend on the selected model, prompt, repository size, tools allowed, context available, and acceptance tests. A serious quality comparison needs independently measured tasks and identical conditions; the available material does not provide that measurement.

Workflow differences by job

Job OpenCode Go fit Claude Code fit Main deciding factor
Try several coding models Strong fit: switch among the Go lineup through OpenCode. Limited in the native experience: choose among Claude aliases or full names. Whether model diversity is more important than a single integrated family.
Explore an unfamiliar repository Possible through OpenCode and the selected provider model. Strong documented use case with interactive repository understanding. Preferred model and how much terminal control you need.
Run a bounded shell job Depends on the OpenCode workflow and provider features in use. Strong documented fit through claude -p, piping, turn limits, and structured output. Script controls and predictable machine-readable output.
Automate Git work and pull requests Possible, but the supplied Go material does not document an equivalent command set. Explicitly documented as a workflow example. Whether you want Anthropic’s documented CLI path.
Centralize enterprise authentication and cost controls Not established for Go in the supplied documentation. Documented through Bedrock, Vertex AI, and LLM-gateway patterns. Existing cloud contracts, audit requirements, and routing policy.
Keep the option to change providers Strong fit because Go is optional inside OpenCode. Possible only by changing the surrounding account or routing infrastructure; the native experience remains Anthropic-oriented. How much lock-in your team accepts.

Pricing and total-cost considerations

OpenCode Go’s predictable subscription shape

Go’s clearest advantage is a published entry price: $10 per month for Go or $40 per month for Go Plus. You can budget the subscription before choosing a model, but the two tiers have different usage limits, and the exact allowances are not stated here. A heavy user should verify those limits and any overage or throttling behavior before treating the monthly fee as a complete cost estimate.

Claude Code’s route-dependent cost

Claude Code does not have one comparable price in the supplied documentation. Your cost depends on whether you authenticate through Anthropic Console, a Claude Pro or Max subscription, the API, Amazon Bedrock, or Google Vertex AI. Cloud and gateway routes can add organization-level metering, logging, or infrastructure charges. Confirm the current plan and usage terms for the route you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare fairly

  1. Write down the actual tasks: interactive coding, code review, CI automation, pull requests, or all of them.
  2. Estimate how many sessions and how much repository context each developer uses in a month.
  3. For OpenCode Go, verify the selected tier’s usage limits and current model pricing.
  4. For Claude Code, identify the account or cloud route and its current usage terms.
  5. Include administration: gateway fees, cloud logging, authentication management, and the engineering time required to enforce permissions.
  6. Compare completed tasks and failure recovery, not just the headline subscription price.

Enterprise deployment, governance, and lock-in

Claude Code in managed environments

Anthropic documents three important enterprise patterns. Anthropic Console provides the vendor-managed route. Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI let an organization use its existing cloud relationship and controls. An LLM gateway can centralize authentication, usage tracking, cost controls, audit logs, and model routing.

Those choices can simplify procurement and observability, but they also mean that the same Claude Code command may have different billing, retention, network, and approval behavior depending on the route. Document the route in team setup instructions so developers do not accidentally mix personal subscriptions with company-managed credentials.

OpenCode Go as an optional provider

OpenCode’s model is more portable at the interface level. Go works like any other provider in OpenCode, so a team can connect Go for a curated lineup and use another provider when policy, price, latency, or model availability requires it. The supplied Go documentation does not establish an equivalent enterprise gateway feature set, so teams with strict centralized controls should verify those capabilities independently before standardizing on Go.

What lock-in means here

With OpenCode Go, the main commitment is to the OpenCode workflow and the provider connection; the model can change without replacing the interface. With Claude Code, the native commands, permissions, session behavior, and automation controls are optimized for Anthropic’s models. Bedrock, Vertex AI, or a gateway can change where requests go, but they do not turn Claude Code into a neutral front end for every model family.

Choosing between them: a practical decision framework

Choose OpenCode Go when these conditions match

  • You want a monthly price of $10 or $40 rather than a route-specific API or cloud bill.
  • You expect to switch among models for different tasks, budgets, or latency targets.
  • You already use OpenCode and want to add a provider without changing the interface.
  • You value the option to connect other providers instead of committing to one model family.
  • Your team can tolerate a changing catalog and is prepared to check current models and limits.

Choose Claude Code when these conditions match

  • Your work is centered on terminal-based repository analysis, editing, testing, and Git operations.
  • You need documented one-shot, piping, session-resume, structured-output, and turn-limit controls.
  • You want explicit permission modes and tool allowlists for scripted or unattended work.
  • Your organization needs Bedrock, Vertex AI, or an LLM gateway for authentication, accounting, routing, or audit logs.
  • You prefer an integrated Anthropic workflow over a broad provider catalog.

Use both only with a clear boundary

Using both can make sense when OpenCode Go is your model-experimentation environment and Claude Code is the controlled automation path. Keep separate credentials, record which model produced a change, and run the same tests and review gates regardless of the tool. Do not assume that a prompt, permission setting, or MCP configuration from one environment transfers to the other.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming Go includes every model visible elsewhere

The Go lineup is curated and changeable. A model available through another OpenCode provider may not be included in Go. Check /models after connecting and verify the current plan before designing a workflow around a particular name.

Treating the Go price as unlimited access

Go and Go Plus have different usage limits. The documented prices alone do not tell you how many requests, tokens, or peak-period actions are included. Confirm the active allowance and what happens when it is reached.

Running Claude Code on Windows without WSL

Anthropic’s documented Windows path is WSL. Set up and test the required Linux environment before distributing instructions that assume a native Windows shell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an outdated Claude model name

Anthropic publishes active, deprecated, and retired model states. Pinning a retired or deprecated name can break scripts or silently change behavior after a replacement is introduced. Review the current model list when updating automation.

Giving an unattended agent excessive permissions

Interactive approval is not the same as safe automation. For scripts, define allowed and disallowed tools, choose an appropriate permission mode, cap maximum turns, and enable structured or verbose output as needed for monitoring and failure analysis.

Comparing prices without comparing routes

A Claude Code user on a subscription, an API account, Bedrock, Vertex AI, and a gateway may all have different cost and governance results. Compare the route your team will actually use with the OpenCode Go tier and limits that match your expected workload.

What to verify before standardizing

  • OpenCode Go’s current monthly prices, model list, token prices, and usage limits.
  • Claude Code’s current installation method and the status of any native binary marked alpha.
  • Node.js 18 or newer on every Claude Code workstation or runner.
  • The operating-system path for Windows users through WSL.
  • The chosen Claude authentication route and its billing owner.
  • Permission, tool, MCP, and session policies for automation.
  • Model names and retirement notices immediately before publishing scripts or internal documentation.
  • Acceptance tests that measure the quality of generated changes instead of relying on brand or model-family assumptions.

Bottom line

OpenCode Go is the better fit for a model-flexible OpenCode workflow with a clearly published $10 or $40 monthly tier. Claude Code is the better fit for a terminal-first agent whose interactive and scripted controls, session handling, permissions, MCP support, and enterprise routes are central to your process. The deciding question is not which name sounds more capable; it is whether your priority is switching providers and models or standardizing a deeply integrated Claude command-line workflow.
