OpenClaw problems become much easier to fix when you identify the failing layer first. Run the official command ladder—openclaw triage, openclaw status, openclaw status --all, openclaw gateway probe, openclaw gateway status, openclaw doctor, openclaw channels status --probe, and openclaw logs --follow—and save the output before changing configuration. A healthy Gateway shows a running runtime, successful connectivity, and a capability level; a healthy channel probe reports live transport state such as works or audit ok. From there, the error text usually tells you whether to correct a URL, authentication setting, permission, approval, allowlist, or provider account.
How OpenClaw is structured
OpenClaw is self-hosted software, not a device that requires a particular physical accessory. Its Gateway is the control plane for sessions, tools, events, and channel connections. Companion nodes can add camera, screen, voice, location, and other device-local actions. Models may be hosted by a provider or run locally. This separation matters because a failure in one layer can look like a failure in another: a browser can be unable to reach a perfectly healthy Gateway, while a connected chat channel can still be blocked by a group policy, and a paired node can be online while its camera permission is denied.

| Layer | What it handles | Typical evidence | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser and Control UI | WebSocket/HTTP connection, origin, device identity, credentials | Connect failed, unauthorized, origin not allowed | Verify URL, port, origin, and auth state |
| Gateway | Runtime, sessions, tools, events, and channel connections | Start blocked, bind refusal, EADDRINUSE |
Check mode, bind security, and listening processes |
| Channel | Chat transport, sender approval, scopes, group rules | Pairing, mention required, missing scope, 401/403 | Probe the channel and inspect policy and permissions |
| Companion node | Camera, microphone, location, screen, local commands | NODE_BACKGROUND_UNAVAILABLE, permission errors |
Check node status, foreground state, and OS grants |
| Model provider | Credential, quota, context window, upstream security controls | 401, 403, 429, blocked-request text | Inspect model status and compare provider responses |
Start with the command ladder
Use these commands in order. Run them against the same OpenClaw installation and preserve their output; changing several settings at once removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsopenclaw triage: Begin with the project’s consolidated diagnostic view. Note whether it identifies a local or remote operating mode, an unavailable runtime, or an authentication warning.openclaw status: Confirm the basic service state and connection details. A service that is “running” is not necessarily reachable from your browser or authenticated for every operation.openclaw status --all: Expand the view to related components, channels, nodes, and capability information. This helps separate a Gateway fault from a downstream integration fault.openclaw gateway probe: Test reachability of the Gateway endpoint. Use the reported target, port, and response to distinguish a network/address problem from an authorization problem.openclaw gateway status: Inspect the Gateway runtime, bind address, mode, and authentication state. A healthy result includes a running runtime, successful connectivity, and a capability level.openclaw doctor: Run configuration and environment checks after the basic status commands. Treat warnings as leads, not proof that the Gateway itself is down.openclaw channels status --probe: Ask each configured channel to perform a live transport check. States such asworksoraudit okindicate that the transport is responding; they do not guarantee that a particular sender is allowed to post.openclaw logs --follow: Keep logs streaming while reproducing the failure. Copy the exact error, including capitalization and prefixes, because OpenClaw uses distinct messages for background availability, permissions, approval, and allowlist decisions.
A missing operator.read scope limits read diagnostics; it does not mean the connection failed. Likewise, a diagnostic warning should not be “fixed” by deleting a plugin configuration. The project’s guidance is to correct file ownership or run OpenClaw as the user that owns the state directory.

When the Control UI will not connect
“Gateway connect failed”
Check the URL and port entered by the browser against the endpoint reported by openclaw gateway probe and openclaw gateway status. A common mistake is opening a local-loopback address from another computer, or retaining an old port after changing the Gateway configuration. Test from the machine where the Gateway runs first; then test from the remote browser if remote access is intended.
“Unauthorized”
Verify the configured authentication mode and the token or password supplied to the UI. A valid Gateway process can still reject the browser when credentials are stale or belong to a different instance. Check whether the browser device is still paired, and complete pairing again if the device identity was reset. Do not treat a successful TCP connection as proof of authorization: transport reachability and application authentication are separate checks.
“Origin not allowed”
The browser’s origin is outside the Gateway’s permitted list. Correct the origin policy to match the actual scheme, host, and port you use, or access the UI through the approved secure/authenticated context. Avoid broadly allowing arbitrary origins on a remotely reachable Gateway.
“Device identity required”
The UI is connecting without the device identity expected by the Gateway. Use the supported pairing flow in the authenticated context rather than bypassing the check. If browser storage was cleared or the UI was moved to a different hostname, the new browser context may need to be paired separately.

When the Gateway will not start or is unreachable
| Log or symptom | Meaning | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
Gateway start blocked: set gateway.mode=local |
The selected startup mode conflicts with the configuration. | Set gateway.mode to local when this instance is meant to run its own Gateway, then restart and rerun the status commands. |
refusing to bind gateway ... without auth |
The Gateway is being exposed on a non-loopback address without a valid authentication path. | Configure token/password authentication (or another supported auth method) before binding beyond loopback. |
another gateway instance is already listening or EADDRINUSE |
The requested port is occupied, often by a second Gateway process. | Stop the conflicting process, or select a different port and update the UI endpoint accordingly. |
| Runtime appears running but probe fails | The process exists, but the address, port, firewall, proxy, or auth path is wrong. | Compare the bind address and port with the probe target, then inspect live logs while making one connection attempt. |
Remote mode deserves special attention. A Gateway configured for remote operation should not be “repaired” by forcing local mode unless that is the intended topology. Conversely, a local installation that reports the local-mode startup block has a mode/configuration mismatch, not a model or channel problem. Fix the mode first, restart once, and rerun openclaw gateway status.
Channels connect but deliver no messages
A channel probe can report a live transport while message delivery remains blocked by policy. Run openclaw channels status --probe, then openclaw pairing list --channel <channel>, openclaw status --deep, and openclaw logs --follow while sending one test message.
Pairing and approval
If the log says pairing or shows a pending approval, the sender is not yet approved. Complete the channel’s pairing approval flow and send a new test message. Repeated retries from an unapproved sender will not bypass the policy.

Direct-message policy and group allowlists
Inspect the channel configuration for DM policy and group allowlists. A sender may be approved for direct messages but excluded from a group, or the group may be allowed while the sender is not. Keep the test scope narrow: verify one approved sender in one approved conversation before broadening an allowlist.

Mention gating
The message mention required means group mention gating blocked it. Mention the OpenClaw participant exactly as required by the channel, or change the group’s mention policy if unattended replies are intended. This is a policy decision, not evidence that the transport is offline.
Scopes and channel permissions
Errors such as missing_scope, not_in_channel, Forbidden, and channel-level 401 or 403 point to authentication or permissions. Reauthorize the integration with the required scopes, invite it to the target channel when necessary, and confirm that the credential belongs to the configured account. A successful probe only proves that the channel endpoint answered; it does not grant access to every conversation.
Fixing paired-node camera, location, screen, and voice failures
Start with openclaw nodes status to see whether the node is online. Then run openclaw nodes describe --node <idOrNameOrIp> to inspect capabilities and openclaw approvals get --node <idOrNameOrIp> to see whether an action is waiting for execution approval. Keep openclaw logs --follow running while invoking the failing tool.

A paired node can be registered yet unavailable for an operation. If the log contains NODE_BACKGROUND_UNAVAILABLE, bring the node application to the foreground and retry. Mobile operating systems commonly suspend camera, microphone, location, or screen access while an app is backgrounded; pairing status alone does not override that restriction.

OS permission errors
Grant the relevant permission in the host operating system, then restart or foreground the node app if the OS requires it:
*_PERMISSION_REQUIRED: the requested capability lacks its OS permission.LOCATION_PERMISSION_REQUIRED: location access is specifically missing; enable the required level of location permission, not just generic nearby-device access.- Camera or microphone failure: check the camera or microphone toggle for the node app and verify that no system privacy control is blocking it.
- Screen capture failure: approve the operating system’s screen-recording or capture prompt for the node and retry the action.
Execution approval and command allowlists
SYSTEM_RUN_DENIED: approval required means the command is waiting for an explicit approval. Review the request in the node’s approval flow and approve it only if the command is expected. SYSTEM_RUN_DENIED: allowlist miss means the command does not match the configured execution allowlist; adjust that allowlist to the precise command or use an already permitted command. Do not treat an allowlist miss as a camera, network, or model failure.
Diagnosing 401, 403, and 429 model errors
Run openclaw models status, openclaw status, and openclaw gateway status, then reproduce the request with openclaw logs --follow. Record the selected model, credential, context setting, HTTP status, and response body. The same status code can have different causes depending on the provider and request shape.
401: credential or authentication failure
Confirm that the credential is present, belongs to the selected provider, and has not expired or been revoked. Check for an accidental mismatch between a local model configuration and a hosted-provider credential. Rotate or replace the credential only after the log identifies authentication as the failing layer; changing Gateway ports will not repair a provider 401.

Anthropic long-context 429
An Anthropic HTTP 429 can indicate that a long-context request requires additional usage eligibility, rather than ordinary short-term throttling. Check whether the selected model requests a native 1M-token context window or carries the legacy context1m: true setting. The practical options are to use a standard-context-window model, authenticate with an eligible credential or API key, or configure fallback models that do not require the restricted context feature. Keep the model’s context requirement with the error when escalating it; otherwise a provider may appear to be rejecting ordinary traffic.
403: upstream blocking versus OpenClaw configuration
A generic upstream 403 such as “Your request was blocked” may come from a CDN, web-application firewall, bot-management service, or reverse proxy rather than the model provider’s authorization system. Compare several models through the same Gateway. If all fail, inspect the response for HTML or security text and compare the provider’s security events with the timestamps in OpenClaw logs. A tiny direct curl request can succeed while SDK-shaped requests are blocked because headers, payload size, or request patterns differ. That result is evidence about request filtering, not proof that OpenClaw credentials are correct.
Fallbacks and safe changes
Configure fallback models when an individual provider, context tier, or quota is unreliable. Test one change at a time: first a standard-window model, then an alternate eligible credential, then a fallback route. Keep the original model configuration documented so you can revert a provider-side experiment without disturbing Gateway, channel, or node settings.
A decision table for the fastest fix
| Observed failure | Layer | Evidence to collect | Required action | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UI cannot open the Gateway | Browser/Gateway | Probe target, URL, port, origin and auth errors | Correct endpoint, origin policy, pairing, or credentials | Mostly diagnostic or easily reversible |
| Gateway refuses startup | Gateway | Startup log, mode, bind address, port owner | Fix mode, add auth for non-loopback bind, stop conflict, or change port | Configuration change; record the previous value |
| Channel probe works but no message arrives | Channel | Probe state, pairing list, deep status, live log | Approve sender, adjust DM/group policy, mention, scopes, or membership | Policy and credential changes are reversible |
| Node tool denied | Node/OS | Node description, approvals, exact error string | Foreground app, grant OS permission, approve command, or update allowlist | Permission and approval changes can be revoked |
| Model returns 401/403/429 | Provider | Model status, credential, context flag, response body, provider event | Correct credential, reduce context tier, use eligible access, investigate upstream filtering, or add fallback | Provider and model selection changes are reversible |
Preventive checks after recovery
- Save a known-good output from
openclaw status --all,openclaw gateway status, andopenclaw channels status --probefor comparison after upgrades or network changes. - Document the Gateway URL, port, mode, bind address, authentication method, and paired browser devices.
- Review channel DM policies, group allowlists, mention requirements, scopes, and membership whenever a bot is moved to a new conversation.
- Keep node permissions and foreground/background requirements visible to the person operating the device; a “paired” label is not a grant for camera, microphone, location, or screen access.
- Record each model’s context-window requirement and fallback order, especially when using native 1M context or legacy
context1m: true. - Follow logs during the first test after every configuration change, and preserve the first exact error instead of relying on a paraphrase.
The reliable workflow is therefore layered: prove the Gateway, prove the channel transport, prove sender policy, prove node capability and OS permission, and finally prove the model credential and request eligibility. Applying a fix at the layer that produced the evidence avoids the common mistake of changing a working Gateway to solve a channel, node, or provider problem.
