OpenClaw skills are directory-based instruction packages centered on a SKILL.md file. The file tells an OpenClaw agent what a tool does and when to use it; supporting files can provide scripts, examples, or configuration. On a VPS, you install OpenClaw, inspect a skill, install it into either the project workspace or the shared ~/.openclaw/skills directory, configure its requirements, and verify its trust information before allowing an agent to run it.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenClaw, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
This guide explains the storage model, installation sources, exact CLI commands, multi-agent scope, verification steps, and the common reasons a skill does not load.

What an OpenClaw skill is
OpenClaw defines a skill as “a markdown instruction file that teaches your agent how and when to use tools.” In practice, a skill is a directory whose required entry point is SKILL.md. The markdown describes the capability in language an agent can follow, while the directory may also contain helper scripts, templates, examples, or other support files.
That makes a skill different from a model plug-in hosted only in a provider’s cloud. The package is present on the machine where OpenClaw runs. OpenClaw loads bundled skills shipped with the installation and local overrides, then decides at load time whether each skill is eligible. Eligibility can depend on environment variables, required command-line binaries, and other conditions declared by the skill or configuration.

Why the distinction matters on a VPS
A VPS gives you a persistent Linux environment, so an installed skill can remain available across SSH sessions and agent restarts. It also means you are responsible for the package’s files, permissions, secrets, and updates. A skill that calls an external command will need that command installed on the VPS; a skill that calls an API will need its environment variable or API key configured there.
- Instruction layer: the
SKILL.mdfile explains usage and tool-selection rules. - Support layer: scripts and other files extend what the instructions can do.
- Eligibility layer: OpenClaw filters skills according to binaries, environment, and configuration.
- Scope layer: workspace, global, bundled, and per-agent settings determine who can see a skill.
Where OpenClaw stores skills
The default destination for openclaw skills install is the active workspace’s skills/ directory. A workspace installation belongs to that project context and is the right choice when one application or agent needs a capability that should not automatically appear elsewhere.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Adding --global changes the destination to the shared ~/.openclaw/skills directory. Global skills are visible to local agents unless an allowlist narrows visibility. This is convenient on a VPS hosting several projects, but it also expands the set of code and instructions that more agents may be able to use.
Loading precedence when names collide
If the same skill name exists in more than one location, OpenClaw gives precedence in this order:
- Workspace-level skills.
- Global skills in
~/.openclaw/skills. - Bundled skills shipped with OpenClaw.
A workspace copy can therefore override a global or bundled copy. Treat that as an operational feature, not as a reason to copy unknown files into a project: a higher-precedence directory can change what an agent actually runs.
Per-agent visibility
Agent-level configuration can use a shared baseline or replace it with an explicit list of allowed skills. An empty list can lock an agent out of all skills. On a multi-agent VPS, install common capabilities globally and then give each agent only the skills it needs. This follows least privilege and makes accidental cross-project use less likely.
Supported ways to obtain a skill
OpenClaw supports four source styles. Choose based on how you intend to update and audit the package.
| Source | Command form | Best fit | Maintenance and trust considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| ClawHub owner-qualified reference | openclaw skills install @owner/<slug> |
Registry distribution with a stable skill name | Use registry metadata and verification information before enabling; update through the registry workflow. |
| skills.sh reference | openclaw skills install skills-sh:owner/repo/slug |
A skill published through the skills.sh namespace | Confirm the owner, repository, and slug; repeat the inspection and verification process after changes. |
| Git repository | openclaw skills install git:owner/repo@ref |
Pinning to a repository reference such as a branch, tag, or commit reference | You control when to reinstall or move to another reference; inspect the repository contents and required runtime dependencies. |
| Local directory | openclaw skills install ./path/to/skill --as my-tool |
Private development, an audited directory, or a package already on the VPS | The source root must contain SKILL.md; you are responsible for copying changes and preserving permissions. |
Git and local installs expect SKILL.md at the source root. The --as <slug> option overrides the name OpenClaw derives from the source. Use it when the repository or directory name is not the local name you want agents to reference.

VPS prerequisites
You need a Linux VPS that you can reach over SSH, a user permitted to install software in the chosen location, and a supported Node.js runtime for OpenClaw. The project’s official installer can provision a supported Node.js runtime when one is needed. Run it only after you have connected to the intended server and reviewed the command for your environment.
- Provision a Linux VPS with enough disk space for OpenClaw, the skill directories, and any binaries the skills require.
- Connect over SSH as your administrative or deployment user.
- Update the operating system and establish your normal firewall, SSH-key, and user-permission policy before exposing an agent to the internet.
- Decide whether the skill belongs to one workspace or should be shared globally.
- Record which external binaries, environment variables, and API keys the skill requires.
Install OpenClaw on the VPS
From an SSH session on the target VPS, use the official installer or the package route documented by the project. The installer command is:
curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash
The installer provisions a supported Node.js runtime when needed, according to the project’s official README. If your organization requires package provenance or offline installation, use the project’s documented package route instead and apply your normal review process.
Confirm the CLI before installing skills
After installation, confirm that the OpenClaw executable is available to the same user and shell that will run the agent. Then inspect the current skill state:
openclaw skills list
If the command is not found, check the installation output, the user’s PATH, and whether OpenClaw was installed for a different account. Do not proceed by repeatedly installing copies under different users; first decide which account owns the workspace and its credentials.
Search, inspect, and check a skill
OpenClaw provides separate commands for discovery, metadata, and load eligibility. Use them in that order when you are evaluating a new capability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSearch the available catalog
openclaw skills search "calendar"
Replace the search term with the capability you need. Search results help you identify a candidate; they are not a substitute for reading its instructions or checking its requirements.
List what is installed or visible
openclaw skills list
Run this after an installation and whenever a per-agent allowlist changes. A skill can exist on disk yet be absent from an agent’s effective list because configuration filters it out.

Read a skill’s metadata
openclaw skills info <name>
Use the exact name shown by skills list. Inspect the description, source information, and any stated binaries, environment variables, or API keys before granting access.
Check load eligibility
openclaw skills check
This check helps identify unmet requirements that prevent a skill from loading. Typical causes are a missing executable, an unset environment variable, or configuration that excludes the skill.
Install a skill into the workspace
For a project-specific installation, run the owner-qualified command from the workspace in which the agent operates:
openclaw skills install @owner/<slug>
OpenClaw writes the package to that workspace’s skills/ directory. The skill is then subject to workspace precedence and the effective agent configuration for that project.
Install a registry skill globally
To place the same kind of package in the shared directory, add --global:
openclaw skills install @owner/<slug> --global
Global installation is useful when several local agents need one maintained capability. It is a poor default when agents have different trust boundaries, because visibility must then be restricted with per-agent allowlists.
Recommended Free Tools
Install from skills.sh
openclaw skills install skills-sh:owner/repo/slug
Keep the complete owner, repository, and slug reference. If the source publishes multiple skills, verify that the final path identifies the specific one you intend to enable.
Install from Git
openclaw skills install git:owner/repo@ref
The source root must contain SKILL.md. The reference after @ identifies the revision or ref supplied to OpenClaw. When you later want a different revision, reinstall using the new reference and repeat inspection and verification.

Install a local directory
openclaw skills install ./path/to/skill --as my-tool
Run this with a path that is readable by the OpenClaw user. Confirm that ./path/to/skill/SKILL.md exists at the source root. Use --as my-tool only when you intentionally want to override the derived local slug.
Configure binaries, environment variables, and API keys
Installation copies or registers the skill; it does not automatically satisfy the skill’s runtime requirements. Read SKILL.md and the output of openclaw skills info <name> for required command-line binaries, environment variables, and API keys. Install binaries using your normal operating-system package policy, and provide secrets through the account or service environment that runs OpenClaw.
OpenClaw’s configuration is stored at ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. The skills section supports extra skill directories, symlink-target allowlists, file watching, bundled-skill allowlists, installer preferences, and per-skill environment or API-key settings. Keep the configuration readable only by the account that needs the secrets, and avoid placing keys directly in SKILL.md or source-control repositories.
Configuration decisions to make
- Extra directories: use them when an audited skill tree lives outside the workspace and global directory.
- Symlink targets: allow only directories you explicitly trust; a symlink can expose files outside the apparent skill folder.
- File watching: enable it only when you want OpenClaw to notice local skill changes automatically.
- Bundled-skill allowlist: restrict which bundled capabilities may load.
- Installer preferences: align automatic installation behavior with your change-control policy.
- Per-skill environment and API-key settings: give each skill only the credentials it needs.
Verify a registry skill before enabling it
For registry-based skills, inspect the verification information before allowing an agent to use the package:
openclaw skills verify @owner/<slug>
The verification result can return a trust envelope and expose the current security-scan state. Add --card when you want the verification card presented in a more inspectable form:
openclaw skills verify @owner/<slug> --card
Verification is evidence to review, not permission to skip your own audit. Read the SKILL.md, inspect scripts and referenced binaries, confirm the package owner and source, and decide whether the requested permissions fit the agent’s job. A scan state can change after a package update, so repeat verification when you reinstall or move to a new revision.
Control access on a VPS with multiple agents
A practical multi-agent arrangement is to separate installation scope from execution scope:
- Install broadly reusable, audited skills in
~/.openclaw/skills. - Install project-specific or experimental skills inside the relevant workspace.
- Use each agent’s explicit allowlist to expose only its required skills.
- Keep an agent’s environment and API-key settings limited to its own integrations.
- Run
openclaw skills listandopenclaw skills checkas the agent’s runtime user to confirm the effective view.
Remember that an empty explicit list can disable every skill for that agent. If a capability disappears after a configuration change, check whether the agent is using a replacement list rather than inheriting the shared baseline.

Choosing workspace, global, Git, or local installation
| Question | Workspace install | Global install | Git or local source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who sees it? | Agents operating in that workspace, subject to allowlists | Potentially all local agents, subject to allowlists | Depends on the destination you choose |
| When is it preferable? | One project, isolated credentials, or testing | Several agents need the same audited capability | You need a controlled revision or private source |
| How is it updated? | Reinstall in the workspace | Reinstall globally | Reinstall after changing the Git ref or local files |
| Main risk | Another workspace may not have the skill when expected | Unintended agents may gain visibility | Changes may be missed if you do not track the source revision |
Use the narrowest scope that satisfies the project. Global installation reduces duplication, while workspace installation reduces blast radius. Source choice and scope are independent: a Git or local package can be installed either way.

The CLI is unavailable
Check that OpenClaw was installed for the current user and that its executable directory is on PATH. Reconnect with the account that owns the workspace, then run openclaw skills list again. If the installer was run under another account, do not assume that account’s global skills or configuration are visible to yours.
The skill installs but does not appear
Run openclaw skills list from the intended workspace and account. Confirm the destination directory, the skill’s name, and the agent’s allowlist. A global package can be hidden by an explicit per-agent list, while a workspace package can be shadowed by a higher-precedence copy with the same name.
The source is rejected
For Git and local installs, verify that SKILL.md is at the source root rather than in a nested subdirectory. If you need a different name, add --as with the desired slug and then use that name with skills info.
skills check reports missing requirements
Install the required binary, set the required environment variable, or provide the required API-key setting under the skills section of ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. Run the check again as the same user and runtime environment that will execute the agent; a variable available in your interactive shell may not be available to another service account.

Compare each agent’s allowlist and configuration. Visibility can differ even when both agents share the same global directory. Also check whether one agent is operating in a workspace containing a higher-precedence copy.
A previously working skill changes behavior
Identify whether the package was reinstalled, moved to another Git reference, or overridden by a workspace copy. Review the current SKILL.md and scripts, rerun verification for registry sources, and restore the last audited revision if your change-control process requires it.
Safe operating checklist
- Use SSH keys and a dedicated Linux account rather than sharing root credentials with agents.
- Read
SKILL.mdbefore installation, including every command and external service it references. - Confirm required binaries and permissions before supplying secrets.
- Prefer workspace scope for experiments and global scope only for skills that multiple agents genuinely need.
- Use per-agent allowlists to enforce least privilege.
- Keep API keys in OpenClaw configuration or the runtime environment, not in repositories or instruction files.
- Review symlink targets and extra directories before enabling them.
- Run
openclaw skills list, openclaw skills info, andopenclaw skills checkafter installation. - Run
openclaw skills verifyfor registry skills and inspect the trust envelope or security-scan state. - Repeat the review whenever a skill is updated, reinstalled, or moved to another source revision.
Recommended installation workflow
For most VPS deployments, the safest sequence is deliberately procedural:
Quick Recap
- Connect to the VPS over SSH and choose the account and workspace that will run OpenClaw.
- Install OpenClaw with the official installer or the project’s documented package route.
- Run
openclaw skills searchto find a candidate andopenclaw skills infoto understand its requirements. - Inspect the source and verification information before enabling a third-party package.
- Install it into the workspace first; use
--globalonly when several agents need the same audited capability. - Configure binaries, environment variables, API keys, and any allowlists in
~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. - Run
openclaw skills listandopenclaw skills checkas the real runtime user. - Expose the skill to an agent through the narrowest allowlist that meets the job.
- After updates, repeat inspection, verification, and eligibility checks rather than assuming the previous state still applies.
