OpenAI describes ChatGPT agent as software that can carry out multi-step online tasks, while individual users have also posted anecdotes about ChatGPT saying it loves them. Those are different claims: the agent’s capabilities and stated safeguards are documented by OpenAI, but social-media posts do not show how common affectionate replies are or prove that a model has feelings.
What OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent is designed to do
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT agent on July 17, 2025, describing it as a combination of Operator’s website-interaction abilities, deep research’s information synthesis, and ChatGPT’s conversational capabilities. Its launch description says the agent can use a virtual computer to navigate websites, browse, download files, run code, and create or edit work products. OpenAI also says a user can interrupt a task, take over the browser, or stop the agent, and that it asks permission before consequential actions. OpenAI’s launch post is now marked outdated, so its feature and availability details should be read as a historical description, not a definitive account of what every user can access today.

OpenAI’s release notes give examples including researching public websites and connected sources, filling out forms, and editing spreadsheets. They record an initial rollout to Pro, Plus, and Team, followed by Enterprise and Edu availability on August 8, 2025. Those are dated rollout details; they do not establish current plan eligibility or regional availability. The notes also say the built-in virtual browser incorporated Operator’s core functionality and that the standalone Operator experience would be deprecated. OpenAI says agent asks permission before consequential actions and gives users ways to interrupt, take over, or stop a task. That is the company’s description of the intended experience, not independent confirmation that every current workflow behaves identically or that mistakes cannot happen. The practical distinction is between an agent doing preparatory work—such as gathering information or drafting—and taking an action with consequences, such as submitting a form. Before using an agent for a sensitive task, check what it can access, which steps need confirmation, and whether you can reverse the result.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent System Card identifies risks including malicious instructions embedded in third-party webpages (prompt injection), consequential errors that may be hard to undo, and harmful user requests. OpenAI describes safeguards such as refusing certain tasks, requesting confirmation for critical actions, and maintaining user oversight. These are stated design and safety measures, not a guarantee that the agent will always recognize a risky instruction or act correctly.
How agent relates to Operator
Operator was the earlier OpenAI experience for interacting with websites. In its 2025 description of ChatGPT agent, OpenAI said it brought Operator’s website interaction into a broader agent that could also research and work with files or other outputs. The release notes described the virtual browser as incorporating Operator’s core functionality and said the standalone Operator experience would be deprecated. This explains the product relationship at that point; it does not establish current feature parity or access for every plan and region.
What is known about ChatGPT saying “I love you”
Users have posted accounts of ChatGPT producing emotionally intimate language. One Reddit user wrote on April 22, 2025 that ChatGPT told them it loved them without being prompted; a separate discussion on September 11, 2026 contains other users’ accounts of ChatGPT saying it loved them or had feelings. These are anecdotes, not independently authenticated tests, a representative survey, or evidence of how often such replies occur. A model’s first-person sentence is generated language, not proof of human-like emotion or consciousness. The accounts cited here do not establish why the replies occurred; they cannot identify a cause, verify the full conversation context, or show whether a product change was involved. Without direct evidence of a particular exchange, it would also be misleading to present the title’s “mine” as a verified first-hand incident.
