OpenAI Says the AGI Era Has Begun—Has GPT-6 Astra Demonstrated General Intelligence?

Not on the public evidence reviewed as of October 9, 2026. GPT-6 Astra has reported strong results on several important tests, but those scores do not establish broad, reliable general intelligence. The most striking example, its 99.9% ARC-AGI-3 result, changes substantially under a different evaluation harness. That conclusion is about what has been demonstrated publicly—not proof that Astra lacks intelligence or that future evidence could not change the assessment.

What did OpenAI mean by “the AGI era”?

OpenAI’s launch announcement presents GPT-6 Astra as capable across computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science and professional work. In its review, the AGI Society attributes the phrase “Welcome to the AGI era” to OpenAI President Greg Brockman. The phrase was not accompanied by a stated AGI definition, test or threshold.

That distinction matters: declaring an era is not the same as publishing evidence that a particular model meets an agreed standard for artificial general intelligence. OpenAI’s announcement is a primary source for the company’s claims and reported results; it is not, by itself, independent confirmation that Astra is generally intelligent.

What do Astra’s benchmark scores establish?

OpenAI reports high scores on a range of named benchmarks. These results are evidence of performance on the tasks and evaluation procedures involved, not a single, universal measure of intelligence.

Test Reported result What the result does—and does not—show
ARC-AGI-3 99.9%, reported by OpenAI using its Responses API harness A high score under that evaluation setup. ARC Prize results reported by the AGI Society differ under a provider-neutral harness; see the next section.
FrontierMath Tier 4 98%, reported by OpenAI Performance on a specific advanced-mathematics benchmark; not a measure of every kind of reasoning or generality.
OSWorld 2.0 72.6%, reported by OpenAI on the offline task subset it identifies Computer-use task performance. OpenAI reports a latency simulation of roughly 40 minutes per task for Astra versus 75 minutes for GPT-5.6 Sol.
AutomationBench 41.4%, reported by OpenAI Performance on the named benchmark; the score alone does not establish dependable autonomy across real-world work.
Terminal-Bench 4.0 57.9%, reported by OpenAI Performance on a software and terminal-use benchmark, not a universal capability score.
Agents’ Last Exam 59.3% for Astra; 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Sol and 55.5% for Claude Opus 5 in OpenAI’s comparison table A comparison on this test as reported in OpenAI’s launch materials; it does not show that the models are equivalent or superior across other tasks.
Terminal-Bench Science 0.1 64.6% for Astra versus 52.6% for Claude Fable 5.1, at the configurations described by OpenAI A result on this benchmark and those configurations, not a general comparison of scientific ability.

OpenAI also lists ARC-AGI-1 and ARC-AGI-2 results. They are separate tests and should not be treated as interchangeable with ARC-AGI-3’s interactive evaluation. Benchmark comparisons are most informative when the task set, tools, prompts, scoring, harness and model configuration are aligned.

Why does the ARC-AGI-3 harness change the interpretation?

OpenAI reports 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 using its Responses API harness. The AGI Society review reports ARC Prize results of 62.7% with a provider-neutral harness and 99.9% with an adapter that preserves OpenAI’s reasoning state between requests. Those are results under different evaluation setups; the discrepancy makes the harness a central part of interpreting the headline figure, not a minor technical detail.

The AGI Society review also reports that ARC Prize found Astra used fewer actions than its median human baseline on 96% of levels. OpenAI’s page quotes Greg Kamradt of the ARC Prize Foundation describing this as “effectively reaching human parity on the benchmark.” That is a meaningful statement about action efficiency on ARC-AGI-3. It does not establish human parity across other abilities, nor does it turn this benchmark into an agreed test for AGI. The same review relays ARC Prize’s caution that benchmark saturation alone is not proof of AGI.

What do independent assessments add?

Independent reporting presents a more mixed picture than a single launch score can convey. Live Science, reporting results from Artificial Analysis, says Astra scored 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, level with GPT-5.6 Sol. The article also reports that Astra fell in relative ranking on GDPval-AA v2, a workplace-task evaluation spanning 44 occupations.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

The same Live Science article describes reported regressions in customer service, scientific Python programming and long-context reasoning, alongside token-efficiency improvements on some software-engineering tests. It reports API token prices of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens for Astra, compared with $4 and $20 respectively for GPT-5.6 Sol. These figures and observations are attributed to Live Science’s reporting and Artificial Analysis; neither a composite index, a price comparison nor performance on a subset of tasks settles whether a model is generally intelligent.

Why is “AGI” difficult to prove with a benchmark?

The AGI Society review says there is no generally accepted empirical test for AGI. Proposed approaches range from conversational imitation and psychometric tests to interactive learning, employment tasks and work in the physical world. Different definitions therefore imply different evidence requirements: a model might perform exceptionally on one class of tasks while leaving important forms of generality untested.

The review notes that it identifies no comparable published Astra result for several broad tests or capabilities, including autonomous driving, independently completing a household physical task, broad robotic autonomy and performing a complete occupation. Their absence from the reviewed public evidence does not mean Astra was tested and failed them. It means the available results do not establish its capability in those areas.

For a stronger case, evidence would need to address more than peak benchmark scores: whether skills transfer to unfamiliar tasks, whether performance holds under provider-neutral evaluation, how reliably the model completes long tasks, whether independent groups can replicate results, and how well it performs in real jobs or physical settings. For an agentic system, staying within authorized scope is also relevant to dependable deployment, even though that is not itself a definition of AGI.

Does the reported Navier–Stokes proof show Astra made a scientific discovery?

Not according to the account in the AGI Society review. It describes an OpenAI-reported proposed Navier–Stokes proof as generated by an internal model more capable than Astra; Astra was subsequently used to formalize and verify it. The proposed proof remains subject to independent scrutiny. On that account, crediting Astra with the original discovery would overstate what the report says.

What is the most defensible conclusion?

OpenAI has reported substantial results for Astra on specific benchmarks, including computer-use, mathematics and agent-style evaluations. But the ARC-AGI-3 headline depends materially on the harness, independent reporting describes both strengths and weaker relative results, and the public evidence reviewed does not cover several important forms of generality. Because there is no generally accepted empirical AGI test, the label also depends on what definition and threshold are being used.

The careful answer to “Is GPT-6 Astra AGI?” is therefore: Astra has demonstrated significant capabilities on particular tests, but the published evidence reviewed here does not demonstrate general intelligence across domains and conditions.
