Is OpenAI raising $30 billion?
Reuters, relaying a Bloomberg report on September 29, 2026, said OpenAI was in early discussions to raise at least $30 billion at a roughly $1.4 trillion valuation. The talks were described as a possible bridge round in place of an IPO; terms could change, and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. The proposed financing would be distinct from OpenAI’s confirmed March 2026 funding announcement. The company said it had closed $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation. A reported $1.4 trillion pre-money target for a possible future round is not directly comparable with that earlier post-money valuation: pre-money refers to a company’s value before new investment, while post-money includes the new capital. Why did OpenAI’s revenue estimate change from $70 billion to $50 billion?
The figures reflect different ways of counting revenue from some transactions involving cloud partners, not a reported $20 billion decline. Axios reported in September that OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate was near $70 billion, citing sources familiar with its financials. In an October 8 explanation, Axios said that figure had been grossed up to make it comparable with Anthropic’s accounting approach. For certain sales through cloud partners, OpenAI records its share, while Anthropic records the full customer payment and treats the cloud provider’s share as an expense. Axios, citing accounting professor Francine McKenna, explained that the treatment depends on each company’s role in a transaction; both approaches comply with GAAP. The accounting difference changes the reported revenue measure without showing that the underlying customer activity fell by the same amount.

What does an annualized revenue run rate tell you?
A run rate projects a current revenue pace across a year. It is not audited full-year revenue, profit, or cash flow, and it does not guarantee that the same pace will continue. It is also sensitive to the period and accounting treatment used to calculate it. Axios noted that public-market investors generally prefer actual revenue over financial constructs such as run rates.
The September estimates are media reports based substantially on unnamed sources, not published financial statements. OpenAI’s March figures offer a company-reported point of reference, but they do not verify the later estimates: in its March 31 announcement, OpenAI said it was generating $2 billion in revenue per month and that enterprise accounted for more than 40% of revenue. What do the reported figures say about growth—and what do they not say?
Axios’s September report said the near-$70 billion run rate represented growth of more than 70% since the start of the third quarter, and that business-to-business revenue was growing at more than 100%. Those figures were attributed to sources familiar with OpenAI’s financials. They suggest rapid expansion, but revenue growth alone does not establish that the company is profitable or that revenue will cover its infrastructure commitments.
Axios said it could not immediately learn details about OpenAI’s expenses. Without expense and cash-flow information, the reported revenue figures cannot establish margins, profitability, or how much funding the company needs.

Has OpenAI confirmed the funding round?
No. The reported $30 billion target and roughly $1.4 trillion valuation remain terms attributed to early-stage discussions, not confirmed financing terms. Reuters also reported that the proposed financing could serve as a bridge instead of an IPO and cited Sam Altman saying earlier in September that OpenAI would not go public in 2026, citing AI safety concerns. That context does not confirm that the round will proceed or replace an IPO.
