On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced a test of “visual ads” that will appear during image generation in ChatGPT. The test is planned for later in October, in the United States, for users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says the ads will be labeled, kept separate from the image being created, and will not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
The headline’s “better with more sponsored results” is a critical framing, not an OpenAI quote. OpenAI describes the change as a new ad format and a way for businesses to reach people as they explore ideas and products. Here is what is confirmed, what is company claim, and what is still unknown.
What OpenAI announced
OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 post introduces a visual ad format meant to show products or services in use, or to offer product inspiration. The first placement is during image generation. The post does not announce a general visual-ad rollout across all chats.

The company says: “Testing will begin later this month in the US with an initial group of advertisers.” That sentence sets the scope. No later geography, expansion schedule, or commitment to put the format outside image generation was given.
Who will see the ads
| Question | Answer | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the test appear? | During image generation in ChatGPT | OpenAI, Oct 5, 2026 |
| When? | Later in October 2026, with an initial group of advertisers | OpenAI |
| Which countries? | United States only, for the initial test | OpenAI |
| Which plans? | Free and Go | OpenAI |
| Are paid tiers affected? | AOL’s article (AJ Dellinger, updated Oct 6, 2026) says Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers are excluded from ads | AOL article |

Is this “more” advertising in ChatGPT?
In a literal sense, yes: it is a new place where an ad can appear. According to the AOL article, ads were introduced earlier in 2026 as sponsored spots at the end of model outputs, and the new test adds a visual format during image creation. The article also speculates that ads could spread across ChatGPT. That prediction is the author’s. OpenAI’s announcement gives no such timeline.
What OpenAI promises about the ads
- Labeling and separation: ads will be clearly labeled and separate from the image being created.
- Answer independence: “As with our other ad formats, advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.”
- Principles: “ChatGPT’s answers stay independent, conversations stay private, and users remain in control of their experience.”
- Sensitive contexts: guardrails are designed to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or otherwise unsuitable situations, backed by automated review, human oversight and ongoing monitoring.
- Brand suitability: pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will run in a controlled testing environment without access to private user conversations.
These are OpenAI’s stated design commitments. The announcement offers no independent audit, so how well they hold up in practice is not yet established.

The performance numbers, and how far to trust them
OpenAI’s post cites 1.2 billion people using ChatGPT each week (OpenAI, 2026). It also cites early results from measurement partners, all as reported by OpenAI:
Rank #2
| Result | Measured by | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 15.3% lower attributed cost per acquisition for WeightWatchers versus its blended paid-search benchmark | DV Rockerbox, 2026 | Attributed result, not a neutral cross-platform test |
| 67% of incremental purchases from net-new customers for wellness brand Dose | WorkMagic, 2026 | OpenAI describes the lift as statistically significant |
| 93% of Portland Leather’s visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new | Triple Whale, 2026 | Visitor share, not proof of incremental sales |
OpenAI itself calls its incrementality work early-stage. These are selected partner findings from advertisers and vendors with an interest in the channel, and none has been independently reproduced. The AOL article takes the opposite view and calls advertiser returns underwhelming, but the passage reviewed cites no specific study. Neither side has settled the question.

The announcement lists vendors by role. This matters mainly to advertisers, but it shows how ChatGPT ads are being built to look like other performance channels.

- Conversion-data integrations: Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp.
- Web and app attribution, conversion APIs, reporting and click attribution: AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, Tenjin.
- Full-funnel and advanced measurement: Fospha, Measured, INCRMNTAL.
- Early geo-based incrementality experiments: Haus, Measured, WorkMagic.
- Brand-suitability pilots: DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
DoubleVerify CEO Mark Zagorski said in the announcement: “ChatGPT is creating a fundamentally different advertising environment, where context is defined by the conversation itself rather than a page or video.” IAS CEO Lidiane Jones said: “As advertising expands into AI-native environments, marketers need confidence that brand safety protections are durable, consistent, and built to operate at scale.” Both are partners speaking inside OpenAI’s own announcement. The post doesn’t give enough methodology to rank these vendors.

What is still unknown
- Whether visual ads will expand beyond image generation.
- When, or whether, testing will reach other countries or paid plans.
- How the “labeled and separate” promise will look on screen. The announcement gives no specifics.
- Whether independent evidence will confirm the partner-reported results.
What this means for users
If you use ChatGPT’s Free or Go plan in the US, expect to see sponsored visuals around image creation from later this month. Paid-tier users are reportedly excluded, according to AOL. OpenAI’s stated rationale is keeping AI broadly accessible while giving businesses a way to reach people. Whether that makes ChatGPT “better” is the critics’ framing. What can be checked is concrete: whether the labels are clear, whether the ads stay out of the image itself, and whether answers stay unaffected. OpenAI’s own words are the standard it can be held to.
