Short answer: ChatGPT Business is a self-serve, seat-based workspace for teams; ChatGPT Enterprise is a custom contract for larger or more regulated deployments; and the OpenAI API is a separate developer platform. Business starts at $25 per user per month when billed monthly ($20 per user per month when billed annually), requires at least two paid seats, and does not include API usage. Enterprise adds controls such as SCIM, Enterprise Key Management, custom retention, data residency, service-level agreements and priority support, with pricing set by contract.
Business, Enterprise and API: what each one actually is
These offerings solve different purchasing problems, even though they use related OpenAI models.

| Offering | Best fit | How you buy | How usage is paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business | Teams that need a managed ChatGPT workspace without a sales-led procurement process | Self-serve subscription with per-user seats | Seat allowances first; eligible extra activity can use optional shared workspace credits |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Organizations needing larger-scale deployment, deeper governance, contractual support or residency options | Contact OpenAI sales for a custom agreement | Contract-level credits or, for eligible agreements, token-based billing in addition to seat fees |
| OpenAI API | Developers embedding models in software, automations, internal services or customer-facing products | Separate developer-platform account and billing relationship | API usage is metered under the applicable API pricing and model terms |
A company can use a ChatGPT workspace and the API together. Buying one does not automatically provide the other.
ChatGPT Business explained
Who Business is for
Business is OpenAI’s self-serve workspace plan for teams. The pricing information lists it for organizations with 2–200 employees, while billing is based on the number and type of paid seats rather than a company-wide employee count. One workspace needs at least two paid seats, so a solo buyer cannot purchase Business as a one-seat plan.

Business seat prices
| Seat type | Monthly billing | Annual billing | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $25 per user per month | $20 per user per month, billed annually | OpenAI-listed 2026 rates |
| Premium | $125 per user per month | $100 per user per month, billed annually | OpenAI-listed 2026 rates |
The annual figures are monthly equivalents on an annual commitment; they are not month-to-month prices. For example, two Standard seats cost $50 per month on monthly billing or have a $40-per-month equivalent on annual billing. Ten Standard seats would be $250 per month month-to-month or a $200-per-month equivalent when billed annually. Those calculations cover seats only; optional shared credits and any terms shown at checkout are separate.
What a Business workspace includes
- Centralized billing and administrative controls for the workspace.
- Access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex.
- Desktop, web and mobile clients.
- Connectors for services such as Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365.
- SAML single sign-on (SSO) and multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Usage analytics, spend controls and workspace agents.
- No training on business data by default, according to OpenAI’s 2026 comparison.
Connector and feature availability can depend on workspace settings and the product rollout. Administrators should verify which connectors are enabled before promising a particular workflow to employees.
How Business usage limits work
Business is allowance-first. Each seat receives limits for advanced features. When included usage is exhausted, eligible activity may draw from a shared workspace credit pool if the workspace owner has purchased credits. This is different from an unlimited-use promise: administrators need to monitor consumption and decide whether to buy credits or restrict higher-cost activity through spend controls.

ChatGPT Enterprise explained
Procurement and scale
Enterprise is sold through OpenAI sales rather than a published self-serve price. The agreement is customized for the organization, and OpenAI describes it as supporting deployments larger than the Business plan’s listed 2–200 employee range, including volume purchasing. Exact seat commitments, included usage, discounts and legal terms therefore depend on the negotiated contract.
Enterprise governance and security controls
| Control or service | What the published comparison says | Why a buyer may need it |
|---|---|---|
| SCIM | Supported | Automates user provisioning and deprovisioning from an identity system |
| Enterprise Key Management | Supported | Provides organization-managed key controls where required by policy |
| Role-based access controls | Supported | Assigns administrative permissions by role rather than giving every admin the same authority |
| Custom retention | Supported | Aligns workspace data handling with an organization’s retention schedule |
| Data residency | Ten regions are listed | Helps organizations meet geographic storage requirements; confirm the eligible region and workload before contracting |
| Domain verification and user analytics | Supported | Helps control who joins and measure adoption or usage |
| Encryption | Listed as an Enterprise capability | Supports an organization’s security baseline |
| Support and service terms | 24/7 priority support, SLAs, onboarding/account management and custom legal terms are listed | Provides escalation paths and contractual commitments beyond standard administration |
| Commercial terms | Invoicing and volume discounts are listed | Fits procurement processes that cannot use a simple card subscription |
OpenAI’s 2026 comparison marks business content as not used to train models by default for both Business and Enterprise. Enterprise adds the custom retention and broader administrative controls shown above; “no training” does not by itself describe every retention, residency or access setting.
Enterprise product access
Enterprise documentation describes access to eligible current models and tools including apps, deep research, data analysis, file uploads, canvas, projects, search, advanced voice and image generation. Access can vary with workspace permissions and rollout status, so the contract administrator should confirm which capabilities are enabled for the intended users and region.

Enterprise usage and billing models
An Enterprise agreement can use contract-level credits. Eligible agreements may instead use token-based billing, which meters usage in tokens or another specified unit at contracted US-dollar rates, in addition to seat fees. Ask for the definitions of billable units, included allowances, overage treatment, renewal terms and reporting before signing; those details are not represented by a universal public Enterprise price.

No. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business FAQ, updated in 2026, states: “A Business subscription does not include API usage.” API credits and rate limits do not transfer into a Business workspace, and Business workspace credits do not transfer to the API platform.
The API is intended for an application or service rather than for people working primarily inside the ChatGPT interface. A development team might call a model from a web product, customer-support workflow, data pipeline, scheduled automation or internal tool. That workload needs its own API account, credentials, usage controls and budget. A Business subscription can still be useful for employees who design prompts, review outputs or collaborate in a workspace, but it does not pay for the application’s API calls.
What to budget for an API project
- A separate API billing relationship and payment method or invoicing arrangement.
- Model-specific usage rates and any current rate limits.
- Expected input and output volume, including peaks rather than only the monthly average.
- Application safeguards such as authentication, logging, retries, caching and user-level spend limits.
- A process for handling model or feature availability changes.
Because API pricing varies by model and can change independently of ChatGPT seat prices, use the current API pricing and model documentation when estimating a software project. Do not assume that a workspace allowance, Premium seat or Enterprise credit pool is interchangeable with API credits unless the contract explicitly says so.
Business versus Enterprise: the buying differences that matter
| Decision axis | Business | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Procurement | Self-serve | OpenAI sales and a negotiated agreement |
| Published price | Standard and Premium seat rates are published | Custom pricing; no universal public rate |
| Typical scale | Listed for teams of 2–200 employees | Designed for larger deployments and volume purchasing |
| Identity and administration | SAML SSO, MFA, admin controls, analytics and spend controls | Adds SCIM, domain verification, role-based access controls and Enterprise Key Management |
| Data controls | No training on business data by default | No training by default plus custom retention, encryption and listed residency options |
| Support | Standard workspace administration | 24/7 priority support, SLAs and onboarding/account management are listed |
| Usage economics | Per-seat allowances with optional shared credits | Contract credits or token-based billing for eligible agreements, plus seat fees |
| API | Not included | Not automatically included; negotiate or purchase API access separately unless the agreement specifies otherwise |
Which option should your company choose?
Choose Business when
- You need a ready-to-use ChatGPT workspace for a small or midsize team.
- Self-serve checkout and transparent per-seat pricing are important.
- Standard SSO, MFA, connectors, analytics and spend controls meet your governance requirements.
- Your usage can be managed through seat allowances and, when necessary, a shared credit pool.
Choose Enterprise when
- Procurement requires invoicing, custom legal terms, volume discounts or a negotiated security review.
- You need SCIM, granular roles, Enterprise Key Management, custom retention or data residency.
- Your deployment is larger than the Business plan’s listed range or requires coordinated onboarding.
- Contractual SLAs, 24/7 priority support or account management are material requirements.
Choose the API when
- The model must run inside software rather than only in the ChatGPT interface.
- You are building a customer-facing feature, internal service, automation or data pipeline.
- Your team needs programmatic controls over prompts, model selection, throughput, logging and application-level costs.
Many organizations use two paths: Business or Enterprise for employee collaboration and the API for production software. Treat them as separate budgets and identity surfaces unless a written Enterprise agreement defines a different arrangement.
A practical selection process
- Count people and seats. For Business, confirm at least two paid seats and decide how many Standard and Premium seats are actually needed.
- Map the work. Separate interactive employee use in ChatGPT from software calls that belong on the API.
- List mandatory controls. Ask security and legal teams whether SCIM, role-based access, key management, custom retention, residency, an SLA or 24/7 support is non-negotiable.
- Model usage. Estimate advanced-feature activity for each seat, then determine whether optional Business credits or Enterprise contract credits are needed.
- Run a procurement check. If card-based self-serve billing is unsuitable, or if volume discounts and invoicing are required, move the conversation to Enterprise sales.
- Validate availability. Confirm that the models, connectors and tools required by each team are enabled for the workspace, region and rollout stage.
- Document the boundary. Write down which costs belong to seats, shared credits, contract usage and API calls so finance does not treat one allowance as another.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Business is an API bundle
It is not. Create and fund a separate API account for any application traffic, and keep API keys out of ChatGPT workspace documents and source code.
Best Value
Using the monthly seat rate for an annual commitment
The Standard annual equivalent is $20 per user per month and the Premium annual equivalent is $100 per user per month; the $25 and $125 figures apply to monthly billing. Label forecasts with the billing cadence so the figures are not mixed.
Confusing “no training” with every privacy control
Both Business and Enterprise are marked as not using business content to train models by default. Enterprise’s separate retention, residency, encryption and key-management controls address additional governance questions that the training setting alone does not answer.
Expecting a public Enterprise price list
Enterprise pricing is custom. Request a written proposal that states seat fees, included usage, credit or token measurement, overages, discounts, support commitments, residency and renewal terms.
Buying Premium seats for everyone without measuring need
Premium costs five times the monthly Standard rate ($125 versus $25) and five times the annual-equivalent rate ($100 versus $20). Assign it to roles that need its included capability level, then review usage analytics before expanding.
What to verify before you sign
- Current seat rates and whether annual billing is an irrevocable annual commitment.
- The minimum seat count and how seats can be added, removed or reassigned.
- Which advanced features consume allowances and when shared credits begin.
- For Enterprise, the exact ten-region residency list applicable to your workspace and workloads.
- Retention periods, administrator visibility, logging and role permissions in your configuration.
- Whether required connectors, models and tools are available to every intended user.
- For API work, the separate pricing, rate limits, data handling terms and operational budget.
- Support hours, SLA remedies, onboarding scope and escalation contacts.
OpenAI’s plan descriptions and feature availability can change. Recheck the applicable 2026 pricing, comparison and contractual terms at the time of purchase, and preserve the version reviewed by your security and procurement teams.
