GPT‑4o left ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. OpenAI announced the retirement on January 29, saying usage had shifted to newer GPT‑5 models. The change removed GPT‑4o from ChatGPT’s model choices, but it did not delete old conversations or end every GPT‑4o-related service. OpenAI’s Help Center says the models remain available through the OpenAI API, which is separate from the ChatGPT app.
When did GPT‑4o leave ChatGPT?
OpenAI announced on January 29, 2026 that it would retire GPT‑4o from ChatGPT on February 13. That retirement is now complete. The same ChatGPT change also covered GPT‑4.1, GPT‑4.1 mini, OpenAI o4-mini, GPT‑5 Instant and GPT‑5 Thinking.

OpenAI later listed GPT‑5.1 Instant, Thinking and Pro as separate retirements on March 11, 2026. These dates describe ChatGPT availability, not a blanket shutdown of every model endpoint in the API.

Why did OpenAI retire GPT‑4o?
OpenAI said the “vast majority” of usage had moved to GPT‑5.2 and that only 0.1% of users still selected GPT‑4o each day. That percentage is OpenAI’s own figure from its January 29 announcement, not an independently audited measurement.

The company also said feedback from GPT‑4o users had influenced GPT‑5.1 and GPT‑5.2, particularly around tone, warmth and creative ideation. OpenAI said users could further adjust ChatGPT’s style and tone.
“We know that losing access to GPT‑4o will feel frustrating for some users, and we didn’t make this decision lightly,” OpenAI said.

It added: “Retiring models is never easy, but it allows us to focus on improving the models most people use today.” OpenAI also said GPT‑4o had previously been restored after Plus and Pro users requested more time to move important creative-ideation workflows and expressed a preference for its conversational style.

Is GPT‑4o still available in the API?
According to OpenAI’s current Help Center, GPT‑4o, GPT‑4.1, GPT‑4.1 mini and o4-mini continue to be available through the API. That does not restore GPT‑4o inside ChatGPT: an API model and a ChatGPT model-picker option are different access paths.

Developers should check the exact model identifier they use. OpenAI’s API documentation records the chatgpt-4o-latest snapshot as shut down on February 17, 2026, with gpt-5.1-chat-latest listed as a replacement. That endpoint-specific shutdown should not be treated as proof that every GPT‑4o API model was simultaneously removed.
What happens to old GPT‑4o chats and Custom GPTs?
OpenAI’s Help Center does not say that conversation history is deleted. Existing chats and projects instead use newer model equivalents going forward. Custom GPTs that depended on retired models are likewise moved automatically to the closest GPT‑5.3 or GPT‑5.4 equivalent.

Because the replacement is a different model, responses, tone and tool behavior may differ. Users with sensitive workflows should review important outputs and instructions after the automatic migration rather than assuming byte-for-byte compatibility.

The text-model retirement did not turn off ChatGPT Voice or Images. OpenAI says Voice uses a similar base model but is ultimately a different model from the retired text GPT‑4o. ChatGPT Images also uses a similar, separate model. The February 13 change therefore should not be described as the end of Voice or image generation.

What should developers do now?
- Identify the access path. Confirm whether a workflow runs in ChatGPT, a Custom GPT or the API.
- Check the model ID. A named snapshot such as
chatgpt-4o-latestcan have a different lifecycle from other GPT‑4o API models. - Test the replacement. Compare prompts, structured outputs, tool calls, latency and safety behavior before changing production traffic.
- Review deprecation notices. OpenAI’s API policy says it gives advance notice, documents retirements and emails active users. Its stated minimums are generally at least six months for generally available models, at least three months for specialized variants and potentially much shorter periods, such as two weeks, for preview models. Those are API policy targets and do not describe the consumer ChatGPT notice period.
The practical bottom line
GPT‑4o is retired from ChatGPT as of February 13, 2026, with the organizational Custom GPT extension ending April 3. OpenAI attributes the decision to low remaining ChatGPT usage and progress in GPT‑5.2, while acknowledging that some users preferred GPT‑4o’s warmth and creative style. Your old chats are not described as deleted, Voice and Images were not switched off, and API availability must be checked separately from ChatGPT access and for the specific endpoint you use.
