The company has rapidly expanded its ad staff, recruited heavily from Meta, cut reported click costs, and added campaign tools aimed at agencies, ecommerce companies, and CRM users.
What OpenAI changed in its advertising business
The shift is visible in both staffing and product scope. The Information reported on October 15, 2026, that OpenAI had nearly 140 employees working on advertising, with almost half joining between July and September. Meta was the largest single source of those hires, although OpenAI vice president of global ad solutions Dave Dugan said the company was hiring from a diverse range of businesses rather than pursuing one-company recruiting.

The team has also been reorganized several times and now includes industry-specific groups and an agency organization. That structure suggests OpenAI is building a conventional advertising operation around ChatGPT instead of treating ads as a side project attached to the chatbot.

Advertiser growth
Third-party estimates show a sharp increase in participation. Dan Salmon of New Street Research, as reported by The Information, estimated that about 60,000 advertisers were using ChatGPT Ads in early October 2026, up from approximately 20,000 in late August. Those figures are estimates, not an audited customer count.
#1 Best Overall
Revenue run rate
OpenAI said on August 31, 2026, that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch and was being used by tens of thousands of advertisers. An annualized run rate projects the current pace over a full year; it is not the same as $1 billion in booked or collected revenue.
Why advertisers may be interested
OpenAI executive Dave Dugan told The Information that about 20% of ChatGPT queries signal a desire to purchase a product or service. That figure describes inferred commercial intent in queries, not completed purchases or guaranteed ad conversions. It does, however, give OpenAI a reason to place sponsored results near conversations where people are already researching products, software, services, or vendors.
Why Meta is a major recruiting target
Meta has an established global advertising business, experienced sales teams, agency relationships, targeting systems, and operational knowledge of campaign measurement. Hiring people familiar with that model can help OpenAI build those functions faster than starting from scratch.
Rank #2
OpenAI still says the hiring effort is broader than Meta. Dugan told The Information: “We’re building the fastest-growing ads business in the world, and we’re hiring from a diverse range of companies across the industry, with no single company focus.” The practical significance of the Meta hires is therefore expertise transfer, not evidence that OpenAI is copying every part of Meta’s ad system.
What the price cuts mean
The reported CPC example
One software advertiser cited by agency executive Cole Furrh of InterTeam Marketing was paying about $5 per click on ChatGPT, compared with roughly $30 to $50 on Google. This is an agency-reported example from one client and campaign, not a universal ChatGPT rate card or a promise that every advertiser will receive that price.
Rank #3
The example matters because early advertising platforms often need to trade margin for adoption. Lower acquisition costs can persuade agencies and advertisers to test a new channel while OpenAI builds inventory, measurement, and repeat demand.
CPC bidding is now part of the platform
OpenAI’s May 5, 2026 announcement said ChatGPT Ads supports cost-per-click bidding and partner assistance with budgeting, bidding, and creative. That gives advertisers a more familiar buying model than a fixed premium placement, while actual costs can still vary by audience, competition, placement, geography, and campaign settings.

New formats and campaign tools
Sponsored Agents and creative automation
In a September 16 announcement, OpenAI introduced Sponsored Agents, prompt-based ad creation, and expanded creative tools in Ads Manager. Sponsored placements had appeared below answers; the new formats broaden the ways a commercial message can appear around ChatGPT interactions. OpenAI described the launches as building “an advertising platform with AI at its center.”
Shopify and HubSpot connections
The same September announcement identified Shopify as OpenAI’s first ecommerce partner and HubSpot as its first CRM partner. These integrations are intended to connect campaign management with product catalogs, customer records, or marketing workflows rather than forcing every advertiser to operate in an isolated dashboard.
Agency support
The Information named TP, Concentrix, and Accenture among firms helping sell ads or set up campaigns. Their current referral arrangements and partner-program terms were not established in the cited announcements, so advertisers should confirm commercial terms directly before relying on an agency route.

ChatGPT Ads versus Google and Meta
| Dimension | ChatGPT Ads | Meta | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business maturity | Rapidly expanding after a 2026 launch; advertiser count estimated at about 60,000 in early October 2026. | Established global advertising platform; the cited material does not state a directly comparable advertiser count. | Established global advertising business. |
| Pricing evidence | One agency example reported about $5 per click for a software client; not a universal rate. | The same example reported about $30–$50 per click. | Meta reported a 12% year-over-year increase in average price per ad in the second quarter of 2026. |
| Buying model | CPC bidding announced May 5, 2026, alongside partner support for budgets, bids, and creative. | Not stated in the cited figures. | Not stated in the cited figures. |
| Formats and integrations | Sponsored placements below answers, Sponsored Agents, prompt-based creation, expanded Ads Manager tools, Shopify, and HubSpot integrations. | Not stated in the cited figures. | Not stated in the cited figures. |
The comparison is not a claim that ChatGPT is already as large or as predictable as either incumbent. Meta’s 12% price increase is an investor-reported platform-wide metric, while the ChatGPT and Google figures come from one software campaign. They describe different markets and should not be treated as a controlled price comparison.
How a business can approach ChatGPT advertising
- Check access first. Visit ads.openai.com and confirm that Ads Manager is available for your country, account type, and campaign category. Availability and partner requirements can change.
- Choose a measurable objective. Define the action that matters—such as a qualified visit, lead, or purchase—before setting a CPC bid. A low click price is not useful if the traffic does not produce the intended outcome.
- Prepare creative and product information. Use the prompt-based creation and Ads Manager tools announced by OpenAI, then review the output for accurate claims, branding, and regulatory disclosures.
- Connect operational systems when appropriate. Ecommerce advertisers can investigate the Shopify integration, while companies using HubSpot can assess whether the CRM connection fits their lead and reporting workflow.
- Set a controlled test budget. Treat the reported $5 CPC as a benchmark from one agency case, not an expected bid. Compare cost per qualified result with existing Google and Meta campaigns rather than comparing clicks alone.
- Review effectiveness data. OpenAI has said it is adding measurement and effectiveness tools. Until those reports are available for your account and objective, keep independent records of spend, conversions, and downstream revenue.
What is still uncertain
- The approximately 60,000-advertiser figure is a third-party estimate, while OpenAI’s own statement used the less precise phrase “tens of thousands.”
- The $1 billion figure is an annualized run rate, not a disclosure of realized annual revenue.
- The $5-versus-$30–$50 comparison is an anecdote from one software advertiser and does not establish average CPCs.
- OpenAI’s rapid hiring and repeated reorganizations show investment, but they do not by themselves prove campaign performance or long-term profitability.
- Sponsored Agents, integrations, geographic access, and agency terms may not be available to every advertiser at the same time.
What this means for the advertising market
OpenAI is competing for budgets by combining a new kind of ad inventory—commercial placements inside AI conversations—with familiar CPC buying, agency assistance, and marketing-system integrations. Meta recruiting supplies experienced ad operators, while lower reported prices reduce the barrier to testing the channel. The immediate opportunity is experimentation; the unanswered question is whether ChatGPT can turn high-intent conversations into repeatable, measurable results at scale.
