If your priority is companions with personal stories who react to your decisions—and you’re open to a party-based RPG rather than an open-world one—consider Baldur’s Gate 3. The available descriptions support those different strengths, but not an objective claim that either game’s companions are better than Skyrim’s.
Which game fits what you want from companions?
| Game | World and party structure | What official descriptions establish | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Age: Inquisition | Described by BioWare as an expansive, story-driven open-world game. | BioWare emphasizes complex characters and difficult decisions; its description does not establish specific companion mechanics. BioWare’s game page and EA’s Dragon Age franchise page. | You want exploration in an open-world structure alongside a character-focused story. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Described by Larian as a story-rich, party-based RPG; the cited material does not label it open-world. | Recruitable Origin characters have their own stories and react to player choices. Larian support describes their personal backstories, quests, motivations, and attitudes. Larian’s game page and Larian’s Origin Characters support page. | You want a traveling party with documented personal stories and decision reactivity, and are comfortable with a party-based format. |
Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition for an open-world story
BioWare explicitly describes Dragon Age: Inquisition as an expansive, story-driven open-world game, with complex characters and difficult decisions. That makes it the more direct match if the world itself—exploring a broad setting while following a character-focused narrative—is part of what you want after Skyrim.

That description does not, by itself, tell you how companions respond to choices, what personal quests they have, or how party interactions work. So treat this recommendation as a fit for the open-world and story framing, not as proof that its companion system surpasses Skyrim’s.
Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for companion backstories and reactions
Larian calls Baldur’s Gate 3 a story-rich, party-based RPG. Its official game page says you can recruit Origin characters to fight alongside you, that each has a story, and that companions react to your choices. Larian’s support page adds that Origin Characters have personal backstories, quests, and motivations, and that their past experiences and attitudes shape their opinions of what you should do.
#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
This is the clearer choice in the available evidence if your main interest is companions with individual histories and visible responses to decisions. The trade-off is format: Larian describes a party-based RPG, not an open-world game. Pick it for the party-and-companion emphasis rather than assuming it reproduces Skyrim’s world structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide if neither is an exact Skyrim replacement
- Prioritize roaming and open-world structure: begin with Dragon Age: Inquisition, whose publisher explicitly uses that description.
- Prioritize companion reactivity and personal stories: look at Baldur’s Gate 3, whose publisher and support material specifically describe those features.
- Need a direct Skyrim comparison: the cited descriptions do not establish a head-to-head measure of companion quality. They also do not provide enough detail to compare banter, combat control, romance, recruitment breadth, or companion abilities.
These are preference-based recommendations, not a ranking: one source-backed fit emphasizes open-world storytelling, while the other provides more explicit detail about companion histories and reactions.
