Open-World RPG FAQ: Playtime, Difficulty, Mods, and Accessibility

There is no single “average” length or universal difficulty standard for open-world role-playing games. The useful answer depends on the specific game, your goals, its current patch, and the platform or edition you own. Treat main-story hours, side-content hours, and completionist hours as separate measurements, then verify difficulty options, mod policy, and accessibility features for that exact release.

This FAQ gives you a practical way to make those checks without mistaking one publisher’s design for a genre rule. It also explains what to look for in menus, support pages, storefront listings, and community tools before you start a long campaign.

What can—and cannot—be generalized about open-world RPGs?

“Open-world RPG” describes a structure, not a fixed specification. Two games can both offer a large map, quests, character progression, and free exploration while differing radically in campaign length, difficulty controls, mod support, saving, and accessibility.

  • Playtime: no authoritative genre-wide runtime figure exists. Any number presented as an average is likely to hide major differences in route, play style, optional content, and update history.
  • Difficulty: some games use a few preset modes; others expose separate controls for combat, stealth, exploration, aiming, or timing. Names such as “Normal” and “Hard” do not mean the same thing between titles.
  • Mods: support ranges from official editors and in-game mod browsers to unofficial, PC-only file replacements. Console, multiplayer, anti-cheat, and patch rules can change what is allowed.
  • Accessibility: difficulty is only one part. Text size, subtitles, contrast, camera comfort, input alternatives, narration, saving, and pause behavior can determine whether a game is playable for a particular person.

Use the sections below as a title-specific verification checklist rather than as promises about every game in the genre.

How long is an open-world RPG?

The honest answer is expressed in at least three targets. A developer statement, a reputable guide, or a clearly labeled estimate should identify which target it measures and which version of the game it covers.

Playtime target What it normally includes Why the number varies
Main story Critical-path missions needed to reach the principal ending Exploration, optional dialogue, travel, combat efficiency, difficulty, and whether the game allows sequence breaks
Story plus side content Main missions plus selected companion, faction, activity, and region quests “Side content” may mean a curated set in one source and nearly every optional quest in another
Completionist All or nearly all quests, collectibles, upgrades, map activities, achievements, and endings Checklist definitions differ, and post-launch content or multiple characters can expand the target

Do not add the three figures together: they are alternative goals, not stages that every player must complete. A player who explores heavily during the main story may finish in more hours than a player who rushes the campaign but later returns for side quests.

How to get a reliable estimate for a named game

  1. Identify the exact release. Record the platform, edition, region, and current patch. A complete edition may include expansions that are absent from the base game.
  2. Find the source’s definition. Check whether “main story” excludes companion quests, whether downloadable expansions are included, and whether the figure is a developer estimate, a survey, or a guide author’s observation.
  3. Compare a range, not a single promise. A range communicates different play speeds better than a precise-looking number. Label it as an estimate when it is not an official statement.
  4. Account for your goal. Decide whether you want the ending, a particular companion arc, every region, all achievements, or an exploration-first run. Your target can be more useful than a genre average that does not exist.

When a title’s official materials do not publish hours, say so. “Not stated” is more accurate than importing a runtime from another game or presenting an unverified average as fact.

Are open-world RPGs beginner-friendly?

Beginner-friendliness is a combination of onboarding, failure cost, control complexity, and how safely the game lets you experiment. A low combat difficulty does not help much if tutorials are unclear, inventory systems are opaque, or a missed quest cannot be revisited.

Check these onboarding features

  • A tutorial that can be replayed or found in a help menu.
  • Readable explanations for attributes, equipment, status effects, crafting, and quest objectives.
  • A forgiving early region with optional encounters rather than unavoidable high-level enemies.
  • Autosaves, manual saves, or checkpoints that prevent a long replay after a mistake.
  • A way to pause, review controls, and adjust settings without restarting the campaign.
  • Quest and map filters that distinguish critical objectives from optional activities.

Ask whether the game permits difficulty changes after the opening choice. A title that lets you lower combat challenge later can be more approachable than one with a very easy preset that cannot be changed, especially when its systems become more complex.

What do difficulty settings actually change?

Difficulty settings allow players to match their experience to their abilities and preferences, as Valve explains in its Steamworks Accessibility Features documentation. The label alone is not enough; read the description or test a setting in a safe area.

Difficulty model Typical controls Questions to verify
Preset modes A small set such as easy, normal, hard, or an equivalent naming scheme Does the mode alter enemy health, damage, aggression, resources, checkpoints, puzzle hints, or rewards?
Granular combat controls Separate sliders or switches for enemy damage, health, aggression, resistances, parry windows, or combat timing Can you change each dimension independently, and do changes affect achievements or rewards?
Assist options Aim assist, navigation help, stealth forgiveness, reaction-time extensions, or reduced input complexity Are assists available on every platform and in every mode? Do they apply to all weapons or only selected actions?
Mixed systems Presets combined with individual accessibility and combat toggles Which settings override the preset, and are some locked during missions or online play?

Examples of granular design

Electronic Arts’ Dragon Age: The Veilguard accessibility resource describes a customizable difficulty system and modular combat controls covering enemy aggression, enemy resistances, and combat timing. Its wording states: “Upon starting a new game, players can use our Customizable Difficulty system to choose the level of challenge they want to experience.” Read the current options in the official resource; the example demonstrates variation, not a standard that every RPG follows.

State of Decay 2 documents separate difficulty dimensions, aim assist, and single-player pause in its accessibility support article. Separate dimensions let a player preserve one kind of tension while reducing another, but you must confirm the exact controls and their effects in the game you intend to play.

Can you change difficulty after starting?

Only the specific game’s rules can answer this. Look for a setting under Options, Gameplay, Accessibility, or a pause-menu tab, and check whether the change applies immediately or after a reload.

Use this verification sequence

  1. Open the pause menu in a non-critical area.
  2. Navigate to the gameplay or accessibility settings and locate difficulty, combat, assist, or enemy options.
  3. Read any warning about achievements, rewards, permadeath, online eligibility, or mission restrictions.
  4. Make a manual save before testing a change if the game supports manual saves.
  5. Confirm the result by checking the setting after leaving and re-entering the menu or loading the test save.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla support documentation confirms that its in-game difficulty can be changed; the current support hub is available at Ubisoft Support. That example should not be treated as evidence that every open-world RPG permits mid-game changes.

Some games lock difficulty during a mission, require a hub or safe zone, disable changes in multiplayer, or apply a new setting only to future encounters. If the menu offers no explanation, consult the title’s current manual or support page before committing to a long run.

Do open-world RPGs support mods?

Mod support cannot be generalized safely. “Supports mods” may mean an official editor, a curated in-game browser, a community loader, or simply that PC users have found a way to replace files. Those are different levels of permission, stability, and risk.

Verify these six items for the exact game and patch

  1. Official tools: Is there a developer kit, editor, scripting API, or documented SDK?
  2. Distribution: Are mods installed through an in-game browser, a recognized workshop, a launcher, or manual file copying?
  3. Platform: Is support limited to Windows PC, available on another desktop operating system, or officially enabled on consoles?
  4. Version compatibility: Does the mod list identify a game build, and do updates routinely break it?
  5. Online rules: Are modified files blocked, tolerated only offline, or prohibited by multiplayer and anti-cheat terms?
  6. Removal and recovery: Can you disable a mod cleanly, verify files, restore a backup, and continue an unmodified save?

Keep separate saves for modded and unmodded play. Back up configuration and save files before installing anything that changes scripts, progression, or world data. Never assume a console mod catalogue contains the same content as a PC community, and never take a single forum post as an official policy.

Common mod failure modes

  • Crash after a patch: disable recently updated or script-heavy mods, then verify the game files and check the mod author’s compatibility note.
  • Missing textures or broken interfaces: remove duplicate framework files and reinstall dependencies in the order documented by the mod.
  • Save will not load: restore the pre-mod save rather than repeatedly opening it with missing dependencies.
  • Online restriction: remove all modifications before entering multiplayer and follow the publisher’s current rules.

Which accessibility features matter beyond difficulty?

Steam’s official accessibility taxonomy includes adjustable difficulty, save-anytime options, adjustable text size, subtitle controls, color alternatives, contrast controls, camera comfort, narration, and alternative input categories. The taxonomy is a useful checklist, not a guarantee that a particular title implements every item.

Area Features to look for Why the detail matters
Text and dialogue Subtitle size, speaker labels, background opacity, text speed, dialogue log, menu scaling “Subtitles available” does not indicate readable size, contrast, or whether important sounds are captioned
Color and contrast Colorblind presets, palette alternatives, high-contrast modes, enemy or interactable highlights A filter may change the whole image without fixing color-coded objectives or loot
Camera and motion Field of view, camera shake, head bob, motion blur, depth of field, sway reduction, photo or cinematic effects Comfort settings can prevent disorientation, but availability and naming vary by platform
Input Full button remapping, toggle versus hold actions, stick sensitivity, dead zones, keyboard-and-mouse rebinding, alternative controllers Partial remapping may leave essential menu or vehicle actions fixed
Aiming and timing Aim assist strength, lock-on, reaction-time windows, simplified combat, stealth forgiveness These can reduce precision demands without lowering every other part of the game
Audio and narration Volume sliders by category, visual sound indicators, menu narration, screen-reader compatibility Master volume alone cannot balance dialogue, effects, music, and accessibility cues
Saving and pause Manual saves, generous checkpoints, single-player pause, suspend or resume behavior Open-world travel can make a restrictive save system especially costly

Check accessibility before beginning a campaign

  1. Open the settings from the title screen, not only from the first playable scene; some options are easiest to inspect before creating a save.
  2. Search every relevant tab, including gameplay, controls, display, audio, interface, and accessibility.
  3. Test subtitle size and contrast against a dark and a bright background.
  4. Try remapped controls in a safe tutorial or practice area, including menus and any vehicle or traversal mode.
  5. Adjust camera motion and aiming assists before a difficult encounter, then confirm the settings persist after restarting.

Accessibility can be present but inconsistently applied. For example, a game may enlarge menus while leaving cinematic subtitles unchanged, or provide aim assist for ranged weapons but not tools used during exploration. Testing an actual scene is more informative than relying on a feature list.

How platform, edition, and updates change the answer

Always attach a platform and version to your notes. A PC build may expose configuration files and community mods that a console edition does not. A remaster can add text scaling or remapped controls absent from the original. A patch can add a setting, rename a mode, invalidate a mod, or alter whether difficulty changes affect rewards.

  • Compare the store page with the publisher’s support documentation for the same platform.
  • Check whether downloadable expansions use the same accessibility and difficulty menus as the base campaign.
  • Confirm regional editions if features, ratings, or online services differ.
  • Read patch notes when a setting or mod suddenly stops working.

A practical comparison worksheet

When choosing between two or more open-world RPGs, record the answers in a table rather than relying on marketing labels.

Question Game A Game B
Main-story estimate and source definition Record hours, date, edition, and whether it is official or estimated Record hours, date, edition, and whether it is official or estimated
Story plus side-content estimate State what counts as side content State what counts as side content
Completionist estimate List collectibles, endings, expansions, or achievements included List collectibles, endings, expansions, or achievements included
Difficulty changes Preset names, granular controls, and mid-game availability Preset names, granular controls, and mid-game availability
Mod installation Official tool or community method, platform, patch limits, online restrictions Official tool or community method, platform, patch limits, online restrictions
Accessibility Subtitles, text scaling, contrast, camera, input, narration, saves, aim assist Subtitles, text scaling, contrast, camera, input, narration, saves, aim assist

Use “not stated” when a publisher has not documented a value. That is preferable to filling a cell with an estimate that looks official.

What should you check before buying or starting?

  • Define your playtime goal: main ending, selected side arcs, or completion.
  • Confirm the exact platform, edition, region, and patch.
  • Read the official accessibility and support pages, then inspect the in-game menus if a demo or trial is available.
  • Verify whether difficulty can be changed and whether granular controls are separate from presets.
  • Confirm mod policy, installation method, multiplayer restrictions, and recovery steps before altering files.
  • Plan save backups if you intend to use mods or a mode with permanent consequences.

The result is a more dependable answer than a single “hours to beat” number or a generic claim that an RPG is easy, moddable, or accessible. Those qualities belong to a specific game, release, and player goal.
