Open-Source Tools for Monitoring and Containing AI Agents

Monitoring an AI agent and containing it are different jobs. Tools such as Arize Phoenix, Langfuse, and OpenLIT help teams inspect traces and evaluate application behavior; guardrails such as NeMo Guardrails and LlamaFirewall can check interactions; NVIDIA OpenShell is designed to enforce policies at the runtime level. These layers can work together, but a trace does not block an action, and an application guardrail is not the same as isolating a process from files, system calls, or the network.

What monitoring and containment each do

An agent trace can show a sequence of model calls, tool steps, retrieval activity, latency, and failures. That visibility helps a team understand what happened and investigate a problem. Evaluation adds a way to check application behavior against examples or criteria. Neither action, by itself, prevents an agent from making a risky tool call or accessing a resource.

Intervention depends on where a control runs. An application guardrail can inspect or validate inputs, outputs, or tool interactions. A runtime sandbox can enforce limits on the process’s access to files, system calls, or network connections. The latter can constrain what happens even when application logic or a model response behaves unexpectedly, but only within the policy and host configuration actually in force.

How the open-source options compare

The projects below address overlapping but distinct needs. Their descriptions are based on the cited project documentation or paper; they are not independent security tests or a universal ranking.

  • 🧠 SIGNALS ADVANCED AI MONITORING Ai-focused messaging creates the impression of a higher level of security, increasing perceived risk and helping deter unwanted activity
  • 👁️ 24-HOUR MONITORING MESSAGE “AI-Assisted Surveillance” and “Activity Patrolled by AI” reinforce constant oversight and elevate the sense of protection
  • 🛡️ WEATHERPROOF ALUMINUM BUILD Durable, rust-resistant metal designed for long-term outdoor use without fading
  • 🔧 EASY INSTALLATION ANYWHERE Pre-drilled holes for fast mounting on fences, walls, gates, or entry points (hardware not included)
Tool What its cited source describes Control layer Key boundary
Arize Phoenix Open-source AI observability and evaluation, with OpenTelemetry-based runtime tracing, datasets, experiments, and agent-framework integrations. Tracing and evaluation Does not itself establish host or tool-call isolation.
Langfuse Open-source AI engineering platform covering traces, monitoring, datasets, experiments, and evaluation; its overview also shows a hosted entry point. Tracing, monitoring, and evaluation The cited overview does not establish kernel-level enforcement.
OpenLIT OpenTelemetry-native platform listing tracing, evaluation, guardrails, prompt and context management, and cost and GPU monitoring. Observability and application-level features Listed guardrails should not be assumed to provide process or filesystem isolation.
NVIDIA OpenShell Open-source runtime that describes kernel-instrumented policy enforcement for file access, system calls, and network connections. Runtime enforcement Effectiveness depends on policy quality and host configuration.
NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails Open-source Python library for programmable guardrails around LLM applications, deployable embedded in an app or through an API server. Application interaction checks The library and API server are distinct from NVIDIA’s separate production microservice.
LlamaFirewall A research paper describes guardrails aimed at prompt injection, agent misalignment, and insecure code, including PromptGuard, alignment checks, and CodeShield. Guardrail and scanning layer The cited paper is not current independent production assurance or proof of guaranteed prevention.

Choose by the control you need

For visibility into agent runs

Start with Phoenix, Langfuse, or OpenLIT when the immediate problem is reconstructing runs, inspecting tool activity, finding failures, or building an evaluation workflow. Compare framework and instrumentation coverage, trace detail, how evaluation data is managed, and whether a hosted or self-managed deployment fits your data-handling requirements. The cited descriptions do not establish that any one of these is best for every framework or deployment.

For checks in the application flow

NeMo Guardrails is relevant when you want programmable checks integrated with an LLM application, either in-process or through its API server. OpenLIT also lists guardrails among its platform features, but the scope of a listed feature is not evidence of operating-system isolation. LlamaFirewall’s paper describes approaches aimed at specific agent risks; treat those as research-described guardrail capabilities, not a blanket guarantee that attacks or unsafe code will be stopped.

For restricting runtime access

OpenShell is the option in this set whose project description specifically concerns enforcing policies on file access, system calls, and network connections. Its project page lists Linux, macOS on Apple Silicon, and experimental Windows with WSL 2, alongside Docker, Podman, or host virtualization as prerequisites. These requirements are platform-sensitive and can change, so consult the current OpenShell repository and platform-specific guidance before planning a deployment.

Where NeMo Guardrails fits operationally

NVIDIA’s documentation describes the open-source NeMo Guardrails library as embeddable, runnable as an API server, or packageable in Docker. It characterizes the open-source API server as suitable for integration, proofs of concept, development, testing, and self-managed deployments. Do not equate that with the vendor’s separate production microservice or assume that the open-source server alone provides high availability, multi-tenant policy administration, approval workflows, or fleet-wide gateway enforcement.

Build a layered design, not a single-tool promise

A practical design separates evidence collection from enforcement and assigns each control a clear responsibility. For example, a team could collect traces in an observability platform, run application checks before sensitive tool interactions, and use a runtime policy to restrict the agent’s available files and network access. The arrangement is a design pattern, not a claim that these products have been tested together or that any particular combination is automatically secure.

  • Decide what needs protection: identify sensitive files, credentials, network destinations, system operations, and tool actions the agent should not reach.
  • Put each check at the appropriate boundary: use application-level controls for interaction rules and runtime policies for resource access. Logging an attempted action is not the same as denying it.
  • Make access explicit: review allowed mounts, network paths, credentials, and any exceptions or overrides. A sandbox’s value depends on the policy and the host environment it runs in.
  • Test expected and rejected behavior: use evaluation examples for application behavior and verify that runtime restrictions actually deny prohibited access in the deployed environment.
  • Keep operational ownership clear: decide who can change policy, inspect traces, approve exceptions, and respond when a run is blocked or fails.

These are deployment decisions teams must validate in their own environment; the project descriptions do not establish a complete security guarantee for any one tool or combination.

What to verify before adopting a project

Feature lists and platform requirements are changeable, and the cited descriptions do not provide a basis for ranking maintenance, licensing, operational cost, or security effectiveness across all six projects. Check each project’s current license, release and maintenance activity, supported integrations, deployment requirements, data handling, and policy behavior before standardizing on it. For a consequential deployment, assess the actual configuration and failure modes rather than relying on product category labels such as “guardrail” or “sandbox.”

NVIDIA’s 2026 Open Agent Safety Platform materials describe a broader reference design combining OpenShell and Sentry, with Sentry associated with BlueField hardware. That platform-level design should not be conflated with software-only OpenShell runtime capabilities.
